Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1905, Mi'kmaq prospector Matty Mitchell found a strange rock in Sandy River, running into Red Indian Lake, Newfoundland. This rusty brown and yellow outcrop was rich in sulphides of lead, zinc and copper, but it took twenty years of scientific advancement before the secrets of the complex minerals were unlocked. In 1926, the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company signed a pact, establishing one of Newfoundland's richest mines at the sire they called Buchans. The Lucky Strike Glory Hole and the underground mines were not the only legacies that Buchans left to Newfoundland. As soon as the mine and mill had begun production, the pioneers turned to recreation, turning and iron ore shed into an ice arena, and the town became famous for its hockey team, climaxing in the "Glory Days" of senior amateur hockey in Newfoundland, when the Buchans Miners hockey team cross-crossed the province in pursuit of sports glory. Here is an account of the Buchans miners - the underground drillers and the hockey players - told by a Buchaneer who worked as a prospector and in the underground mines. Garry Cranford is the author of the bestselling book, Newfoundland Schooner: Norma & Gladys, and co-author of Potheads & Drum Hoops and From Cod to Crab. He lives in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first German arrived in Newfoundland with Leif Eirikson's Viking expedition. By 1914 St. John's was home to a vibrant German community while a Moravian enclave thrived in Labrador. Contemporary Newfoundland, however, remembers its German heritage largely in terms of U-Boat captains and local spies. Gerhard Bassler reveals what was lost when almost all earlier memories of Germans in Newfoundland and Labrador vanished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador joining Canada, Sean T. Cadigan has written the book that will surely become the definitive history of one of North America's most distinct and beautiful regions. The site of the first European settlement by Vikings one thousand years ago, a former colony of England, and known at various times as Terra Nova and Newfoundland until its official name change to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001, this easternmost point of the continent has had a fascinating history in part because of its long-held position as the gateway between North America and Europe. Examining the region from prehistoric times to the present, Newfoundland and Labrador is not only a comprehensive history of the province, but an illuminating portrait of the Atlantic world and European colonisation of the Americas. Cadigan comprehensively details everything from the first European settlements, the displacement and extinction of the indigenous Beothuk by European settlers, the conflicts between settlers and imperial governance, to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's near annihilation at the Battle of the Somme, the rise of Newfoundland nationalism, Joey Smallwood's case for confederation, and the modernization and economic disappointments instigated by joining Canada. Paying particular attention to the ways in which Newfoundland and Labrador's history has been shaped by its environment, this study considers how natural resources such as the Grand Banks, the disappearance of cod, and off-shore oil have affected the region and its inhabitants. Richly detailed, compelling, and written in an engaging and accessible style, Newfoundland and Labrador brings the rich and vibrant history of this remarkably interesting region to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Newfoundland is a brilliant combination of first-hand observation, and of research into fascinating source materials. Professor Fay made tours of Newfoundland and of Labrador and examined documentary material in London and the West Country. Both his observations and his source-material are fresh and stimulating, and he writes in his usual lively provocative style. Professor Fay relates the economic history of Newfoundland to the seafaring and commercial background of the Island's first inhabitants. Many parallels can be drawn between life in early Newfoundland and in the west of England where the enterprises which first discovered Newfoundland and its resources were founded. Despite legal restrictions on the growth of permanent settlements, Newfoundland developed inexorably from a simple fishery to a full-fledged colony. And just as Newfoundland could not help its progression from fishery to established settlement, so today it is inevitably pressing towards industrial maturity. The material in this volume is based upon a series of lectures first delivered in 1953 at Memorial University, St. John's Newfoundland.
