Download or read book The Brown Owl - a Fairy Story written by Ford Madox Hueffer and published by Ford. Press. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Ford Madox Ford was originally published in 1892 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. Ford Madox Ford was born Ford Madox Hueffer in Merton, Surrey, England on 17th December 1873. The creative arts ran in his family - Hueffer's grandfather, Ford Madox Brown, was a well-known painter, and his German emigre father was music critic of The Times - and after a brief dalliance with music composition, the young Hueffer began to write. Although Hueffer never attended university, during his early twenties he moved through many intellectual circles, and would later talk of the influence that the "Middle Victorian, tumultuously bearded Great" - men such as John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle - exerted on him. In 1908, Hueffer founded the English Review, and over the next 15 months published Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, John Galsworthy and W. B. Yeats, and gave debuts to many authors, including D. H. Lawrence and Norman Douglas. Hueffer's editorship consolidated the classic canon of early modernist literature, and saw him earn a reputation as of one of the century's greatest literary editors. Ford's most famous work was his Parade's End tetralogy, which he completed in the 1920's and have now been adapted into a BBC television drama. Ford continued to write through the thirties, producing fiction, non-fiction, and two volumes of autobiography: Return to Yesterday (1931) and It was the Nightingale (1933). In his last years, he taught literature at the Olivet College in Michigan. Ford died on 26th June 1939 in Deauville, France, at the age of 65."

Book excerpt: ONCE upon a time, a long while ago-in fact long before Egypt had risen to power and before Rome or Greece had ever been heard of-and that was some time before you were born, you know-there was a king who reigned over a very large and powerful kingdom. Now this king was rather old, he had founded his kingdom himself, and he had reigned over it nine hundred and ninety-nine and a half years already. As I have said before, it was a very large kingdom, for it contained, among other things, the whole of the western half of the world. The rest of the world was divided into smaller kingdoms, and each kingdom was ruled over by separate princes, who, however, were none of them so old as Intafernes, as he was called.

Download or read book Wesley the Owl written by Stacey O'Brien and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling memoir of a biologist’s life with an unforgettable owl “will captivate animal lovers” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). On Valentine’s Day 1985, biologist Stacey O’Brien first met a four-day-old barn owl—a fateful encounter that would turn into an astonishing 19-year saga. With nerve damage in one wing, the owlet had no hope of surviving in the wild. O’Brien, a young assistant in the owl laboratory at Caltech, was immediately smitten, promising to give him a permanent home. Wesley the Owl is the funny, poignant story of their dramatic two decades together. With a tender heart and a scientist’s eye, O’Brien describes how Wesley grew from a helpless ball of fuzz to a gorgeous adult owl with an outsized personality. She also brings us inside her research community, a kind of scientific Hogwarts where resident owls flew freely from office to office and eccentric, brilliant scientists were extraordinarily committed to studying and helping animals. As O’Brien gets close to Wesley, she makes important discoveries about owl behavior, intelligence, and communication: he did not tolerate lies, held her to her promises, and provided unconditional love, though he was not beyond an occasional sulk. When O’Brien develops her own life-threatening illness, the biologist who saved the life of a helpless baby bird is herself rescued from death by the insistent love and courage of this wild animal.
