Book excerpt: One component of the experimental program at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) consists of a class of experiments which will study the acceleration of electrons through micron-size structures which are exposed in coincidence to a 100 GW CO2 laser beam. These experiments require the development and control of an electron beam with geometric emittances on the order of 10−1° m-rad and intensities on the order of 106 electrons. In this paper, we describe the strategies for producing such beams and the effects of high-order aberrations. Particle tracking results are presented for the final-focus system. 9 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.

Its design is optimized to explore laser acceleration and coherent radiation production. To characterize the low-emittance, picoseconds long electron beam produced by the ATF's photocathode RF gun, we have installed electron beam profile monitors for transverse emittance measurement, and developed a new technique to measure electron beam pulse length by chirping the electron beam energy. We have also developed a new technique to measure the ps slice emittance of a 10 ps long electron beam. Stripline beam position monitors were installed along the beam to monitor the electron beam position and intensity. A stripline beam position monitor was also used to monitor the timing jitter between the RF system and laser pulses. Transition radiation was used to measure electron beam energy, beam profile and electron beam bunch length.

The emittances were measured with a laser-wire beam-profile monitor installed in the damping ring. The bunch length and the momentum spread of the beam were also recorded under the same conditions. The smallest vertical rms emittance measured is 4 pm in the limit of zero current. It increases by a factor of 1.5 for a bunch intensity of 101° electrons. There are no discrepancies between the measured data and the calculations of intra-beam scattering.

An experimental program for testing the 1.6 cell RF gun is presented. This program includes beam loading caused by dark current, higher order mode field measurements, integrated and slice emittance measurements using a pepper-pot and RF kicker cavity.

Recent progress on the studies on production of low emittance beam, multi-bunch beam operation and development on beam instrumentation are discussed. So far, a horizontal emittance of 1.7 " 0.3 nm was measured with wire-scanners in the extraction line and with the horizontal spatial coherence using an SR interferometer. In addition, a vertical emittance of 15 " 7.5 pm was measured with a laser wire and the SR interferometer in the ring and 5 wire scanners.
