Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brook Trout and the Determined Angler: A Little Pocket Volume Containing Several Descriptions of a Fly Fisher's Paradise, and a Few Practical Suggestions for the Young Angler The article, "Fly Fishing for Trout," I contributed in its original form to Sports Afield, Mr. Claude King's Western journal. The article "Trout and Trouting," as I originally prepared it, was entitled "Near-by Trout Streams," and was written for and published in Outing, when I was field editor of that delightful magazine. "Trouting in Canadensis Valley" is rewritten from a little story of mine penned for the noted angler and ichthyologist, Mr. William C. Harris, and published by him in The American Angler. And most of the items in "Little Casts" are from a collection of paragraphs I have contributed to the New York Herald and various sporting periodicals in the past dozen years. For the little pen-and-ink sketches I am indebted to our jovial artist, Leppert. The picture, "Taking the Fly," is a reproduction from an etching in my possession, presented to me by Mr. William M. Carey, whose etchings and paintings in oil are well known to American sportsmen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For Dave Hughes, it's not size but "that sense of intimacy" you get when you can observe the whole stream and "feel that you're a large and integral part of it." Hughes draws on his years of experience to teach you everything you need to know about fishing small streams, from choosing rods and flies to reading the weather and water. Hughes knows that successful fly fishing is more than just catching the most or the biggest fish. Small streams provide the opportunity for exploration and discovery—in addition to the fish. This second edition contains new chapters on reading the seasons and tenkara and is superbly illustrated with more than 100 new color photos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly revised and expanded new edition of Taylor Streit’s classic Instinctive Fly Fishing addresses the “real reasons people catch trout,” and offers suggestions and tips to help the aspiring angler take advantage of his or her own fly-fishing instincts. Since Instinctive was first published in 2003, the author has kept track of certain essential elements that were missing from the first edition. Even as he’s been out on a guide trip with a client, he’s kept notes about what “should have been in Instinctive.” This thorough revision benefits from more than seven years of his instinctive rumination. Rewritten with an eye toward a new audience, Instinctive aims for those who fish in competitive situations and overfished waters, which appeals especially to those in the eastern half of the United States. Additional content includes fishing tailwaters with tiny flies, practical information on insect hatches (tricos, blue winged olives, and green drakes) and illustrations of knots and rigs. Also included are additional chapters on the environment, stream manners, and safety.

Book excerpt: The most comprehensive Yup'ik dictionary in existence, the second edition of this important work now adds extensive research on Central Alaskan Yup'ik, enhancing the forty years of research done by Steven A. Jacobson on the Yup'ik language and dialects. Over these decades, Jacobson has combed through records of explorers, linguists, missionaries, and anyone who has come in contact with the actively migratory Yup'ik people. Combined with information from native Yup'ik speakers, that research has led to a richly detailed dictionary that covers the entire language and all its dialects. The dictionary also offers sections on Yup'ik spelling, early vocabulary, demonstrative words, and important intersections of Yup'ik language and culture such as the kayak, dogsled, parka, and old-style dwellings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the High Plains to the east, Denver, Colorado, is nicknamed the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level. Over the past ten years, it has also been one of the country's fastest-growing metropolitan areas. In Denver's early days, its geographic proximity to the mineral-rich mountains attracted miners, and gold and silver booms and busts played a large role in its economic success. Today, its central location—between the west and east coasts and between major cities of the Midwest—makes it a key node for the distribution of goods and services as well as an optimal site for federal agencies and telecommunications companies. In Metropolitan Denver, Andrew R. Goetz and E. Eric Boschmann show how the city evolved from its origins as a mining town into a cosmopolitan metropolis. They chart the foundations of Denver's recent economic development—from mining and agriculture to energy, defense, and technology—and examine the challenges engendered by a postwar population explosion that led to increasing income inequality and rapid growth in the number of Latino residents. Highlighting the risks and rewards of regional collaboration in municipal governance, Goetz and Boschmann recount public works projects such as the construction of the Denver International Airport and explore the smart growth movement that shifted development from postwar low-density, automobile-based, suburban and exurban sprawl to higher-density, mixed use, transit-oriented urban centers. Because of its proximity to the mountains and generally sunny weather, Denver has a reputation as a very active, outdoor-oriented city and a desirable place to live and work. Metropolitan Denver reveals the purposeful civic decisions made regarding tourism, downtown urban revitalization, and cultural-led economic development that make the city a destination.
