Book excerpt: Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. “A fascinating account of the siblings’ formative years to their deaths, exploring the forces that shaped them.” —Telegraph & Argus From early childhood, literature and the world of books held the attention and sparked the fertile imaginations of the emotionally intense and fascinating Brontë siblings. Beset by tragedy, three outlets existed for their grief and their creative talents; they escaped into books, into the wild moorlands surrounding their home and into their own rich inner lives and an intricate play-world born of their collective imaginations. In this new study, Catherine Rayner offers a full and fascinating exploration of the formative years of these bright children, taking us on a journey from their earliest years to their tragically early deaths. The Brontë girls grew into women who were unafraid to write themselves into territories previously only visited by male authors. In addition, they tackled all the taboo subjects of their time; divorce, child abuse, bigamy, domestic violence, class, female depression and mental illness. Nothing was beyond their scope and it is especially for this ability and determination to speak for women, the marginalized and the disadvantaged that they are remembered and celebrated today, two hundred years after their births in the quiet Yorkshire village of Haworth. This timely release offers a fresh perspective on a fascinating family and a unique trio of talented and trailblazing sisters whose books will doubtless continue to haunt and inspire for generations to come. “Rayner certainly opens some interesting windows onto the world with her melding of the social conditions and the emotional and psychological states of her ‘subjects.’” —Alliance of Literary Societies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five novels by the nineteenth-century literary sisters who “turned domestic constraints into grist for brilliant books” (The Atlantic). This collection brings together five novels by Anne, Charlotte, and Emily Brontë in one volume. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë: When a visitor arrives at a gloomy and isolated house in northern England, he discovers a story of passion, vengeance, and tragedy, in this gothic novel that shocked the readers of its day. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: Revolutionary for its time, this Victorian novel is narrated by its titular character, telling the story of her childhood as an abused orphan, her school years, her time as a governess, and her simmering passion for the elusive Mr. Rochester. Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë: This novel follows the experiences of a minister’s daughter who, when her family becomes impoverished, begins working as a governess, bringing her inside the homes of the English gentry, where she observes both material wealth and spiritual deprivation. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë: Helen Graham is known as the young widow who moved into a long-empty mansion with her son, took up an artistic career, and kept her distance from her neighbors. But readers of this classic, considered one of the earliest feminist novels, will discover there is more to Helen’s story. Shirley by Charlotte Brontë: Set in a time of war, economic troubles, and the Luddites’ rebellion against the rise of machines, this is the story of two female friends: one a strong-willed heiress, the other an insecure girl abandoned by her mother.

Book excerpt: Although the Brontës have long fascinated readers of fiction and biography, their poetry was all too little known until this pioneering selection by Stevie Davies, the novelist and critic. Charlotte (1816-1855) is certainly a competent poet, and Anne (1820-1849) developed a distinctive voice, while Emily (1818-1848) is one of the great women poets in English. Read together with their novels, the poems movingly elucidate the ideas around which the narratives revolve. And they surprise us out of our conventional notions of the sisters' personalities: Emily's rebelliousness, for example, is counterbalanced here by great tenderness. This selection of over seventy poems gives an idea of the variety of thought and feeling within each author's work, and of the way in which the poems of these three remarkable writers parallel and reflect each other.

This handsome leather-bound edition includes the most acclaimed novels of each of the Brontë sisters: Charlotte’s Jane Eyre, Emily’s Wuthering Heights, and Anne’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Originally published under male pseudonyms in the 1840s, these three novels later helped give rise to the feminist literary movement of the late nineteenth century, in which women’s perspectives became more accepted by the mainstream reading public. A scholarly introduction provides an overview of the sisters’ childhood in northern England, their literary influences, and their enduring legacy.

Book excerpt: The Bronte sisters have received an enormous amount of critical attention, given their short lives and relatively slender literary production. As a group and individually the Brontes' works resist being swept away by any one critical approach. They defied conventional ideas of the novel genre and have always made it difficult for critics to categorize them. The aim of these volumes is to emphasize both the diversity and difficulty of critical approaches to the works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the 3 Books To Know series, our idea is to help readers learn about fascinating topics through three essential and relevant books. These carefully selected works can be fiction, non-fiction, historical documents or even biographies. We will always select for you three great works to instigate your mind, this time the topic is: Brontë Sisters: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall , by Anne Brontë. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë. Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë Anne's second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was published in the last week of June 1848. It was an instant, phenomenal success; within six weeks it was sold out. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is perhaps amongst the most shocking of contemporary Victorian novels. In seeking to present the truth in literature, Anne's depiction of alcoholism and debauchery was profoundly disturbing to 19th-century sensibilities. Charlotte's Jane Eyre tells the story of a plain governess, Jane, who, after difficulties in her early life, falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester. They marry, but only after Rochester's insane first wife, of whom Jane initially has no knowledge, dies in a dramatic house fire. The book's style was innovative, combining naturalism with gothic melodrama, and broke new ground in being written from an intensely evoked first-person female perspective. Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights was first published in London in 1847. Wuthering Heights's violence and passion led the Victorian public and many early reviewers to think that it had been written by a man. According to Juliet Gardiner, "the vivid sexual passion and power of its language and imagery impressed, bewildered and appalled reviewers." This is one of many books in the series 3 Books To Know. If you liked this book, look for the other titles in the series, we are sure you will like some of the topics.
