Book excerpt: Love in the Cretaceous takes place in a dinosaur park in Oregon a hundred years in the future. Ted Beebe has lost the love of his life and must suddenly find his way alone in old age. He finds young people to take the place of his wife and himself in assuring the survival of Cretaceous World, the park his wife and he created. Global warming has proceeded as predicted, and the fate of Homo sapiens has become obviously uncertain. People come to see the genetically engineered recreations of dinosaurs and are made more aware of humanity's own vulnerability to extinction. Ted succeeds in creating a new family structure whose three generations will guide the park through the immediate future. He also keeps alive his wife's memory while coping with the challenges of the uncertain future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. "Ode to certain interstates," the thirteen-part poem of this collection, was inspired by the year poet Howard W. Robertson worked as a long-haul truck driver in the American West and British Columbia. In between pauses at truck stops and rest areas, the author meditates on (among other matters) Kant, the Kalapuyans, Basho, and the "best buffet in the West." The eight additional poems in the book, such as "Ode to this small stick" and "The transcendental laughter of Eleanor," use a refined intelligence to probe the daily intersections of the sacred and banal. Howard W. Robertson is a retired research librarian. In 2003, he was awarded the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Prize for Poetry.

The book is "portable and durable. If you leave the area it will still be useful. There are many other places like this one. The book might help you recognize them. The future has preoccupations and it has trajectories. The book maps these conditions... Some possibilities will blossom as others collapse. The language of the future is more beautiful than we know"--from the inside flap.

Book excerpt: This book brings together scholars who explore the evolving meanings of diversity and how these meanings present new challenges and considerations for collegiate leadership, management, and practice. The book offers empirical, scholarly, and personal space to interrogate the seemingly elusive but compelling challenges postsecondary institutions face in managing diversity. Book chapters are offered in a variety of voices - some detailing theoretical, conceptual, sociohistorical, and globalized meanings of diversity; some highlighting college personnel narratives around social justice and equity; and some illustrating identity politics and provocative topics among students, faculty, and staff that continue to present formidable challenges to collegiate equity agendas. The intent is to both question existing efforts to diversify and make inclusive collegiate contexts; to present new frameworks of thinking about diversity, equity, and inclusion; and to identify and detail policy and practice implications.

Book excerpt: The present special issue is the third volume produced by a group of researchers who convene every two years to discuss the role of morphology in word recognition. It includes thirteen experimental papers, all devoted to morphological processing. The volume explores a variety of languages such as Arabic, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Serbo-Croatian, and Spanish. The methods of investigations include single-word recognition, masked, cross-modal, and long-term priming, the monitoring of eye movements, or the use of computer simulations, with both the processing of speech and print being explored. The present volume, being the third consecutive one on morphology, provides a longitudinal perspective on the theoretical issues currently under debate in the field of morphological processing, and also sets the scene for future work in this domain.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explanation-Based Learning (EBL) can generally be viewed as substituting background knowledge for the large training set of exemplars needed by conventional or empirical machine learning systems. The background knowledge is used automatically to construct an explanation of a few training exemplars. The learned concept is generalized directly from this explanation. The first EBL systems of the modern era were Mitchell's LEX2, Silver's LP, and De Jong's KIDNAP natural language system. Two of these systems, Mitchell's and De Jong's, have led to extensive follow-up research in EBL. This book outlines the significant steps in EBL research of the Illinois group under De Jong. This volume describes theoretical research and computer systems that use a broad range of formalisms: schemas, production systems, qualitative reasoning models, non-monotonic logic, situation calculus, and some home-grown ad hoc representations. This has been done consciously to avoid sacrificing the ultimate research significance in favor of the expediency of any particular formalism. The ultimate goal, of course, is to adopt (or devise) the right formalism.

Book excerpt: Water in a Dry Land is a story of research about water as a source of personal and cultural meaning. The site of this exploration is the iconic river system which forms the networks of natural and human landscapes of the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. In the current geological era of human induced climate change, the desperate plight of the system of waterways has become an international phenomenon, a symbol of the unsustainable ways we relate to water globally. The Murray-Darling Basin extends west of the Great Dividing Range that separates the densely populated east coast of Australia from the sparsely populated inland. Aboriginal peoples continue to inhabit the waterways of the great artesian basin and pass on their cultural stories and practices of water, albeit in changing forms. A key question informing the book is: What can we learn about water from the oldest continuing culture inhabiting the world's driest continent? In the process of responding to this question a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers formed to work together in a contact zone of cultural difference within an emergent arts-based ethnography. Photo essays of the artworks and their landscapes offer a visual accompaniment to the text on the Routledge Innovative Ethnography Series website, http://www.innovativeethnographies.net/. This book is perfect for courses in environmental sociology, environmental anthropology, and qualitative methods.
