Book excerpt: The organization of the tectum of the tiger salamander Ambystoma tigrinum was studied using anatomical and electrophysiological methods. The tectum can be divided into two concentric areas - a gray consisting of tightly packed cells around the cerebral aqueduct and a surrounding plexiform layer. Within these structures there are two classes of cells: type W, restricted to the outer third layer of the gray, with wide dendritic arborization; type N, found throughout the gray with very narrow dendritic arborization. Recording extracellularly there is a point-to-point projection of the visual field onto the tectum. Five types of units were found similar to those in the frog, however, responsive receptive fields were larger and no functional layering was apparent. The inner half of the plexiform layer has two somesthetic projections; a point-to-point projection of the contralateral body and a deeper bilateral projection. Units respond to simple touch stimuli and receptive fields cover several square centimeters of the body. Most single units in the gray respond to both light and touch stimulation. (Author).

In a recent review of the limbic system, Swanson points to Brodal’s criticism that the discovery of connections of limbic structures with virtually all parts of the nervous system render the concept of the limbic system useless, and better abandoned. Additional dissatisfaction surrounding the limbic brain concept stems from the feeling that it is historically inert (an antiquated 19th century construct). In our current age of neural networks, and parallel distributed process it is of little value, merely an historical curio. So why then this int- duction to limbic brain anatomy? We offer several interrelated rationales behind our labors. Recapitulation in the Service of Education: Although concepts had evolved in the second half of this century which effectively overthrew the idea of relatively isolated hemispheric districts (i. e. striatal, cortical, and limbic), parsing the hemisphere into these three districts was an important preliminary step achieved by our forebears in their efforts to understand the large scale structure of the higher mammalian cerebral hemisphere. An examination of how the limbic brain concept came to be provides an opp- tunity to recapitulate the process of exploration, discovery, and und- standing as it relates to one of these principle hemispheric domains.

This book examines these innovations and relates them to evolutionary changes in other organ systems, animal behavior, and ecological conditions at the time. The resulting perspective clarifies what makes the major vertebrate lineages unique and helps explain their varying degrees of ecological success. One of the book's major conclusions is that vertebrate nervous systems are more diverse than commonly assumed, at least among neurobiologists. Examples of important innovations include not only the emergence of novel brain regions, such as the cerebellum and neocortex, but also major changes in neuronal circuitry and functional organization. A second major conclusion is that many of the apparent similarities in vertebrate nervous systems resulted from convergent evolution, rather than inheritance from a common ancestor. For example, brain size and complexity increased numerous times, in many vertebrate lineages. In conjunction with these changes, olfactory inputs to the telencephalic pallium were reduced in several different lineages, and this reduction was associated with the emergence of pallial regions that process non-olfactory sensory inputs. These conclusions cast doubt on the widely held assumption that all vertebrate nervous systems are built according to a single, common plan.
