Book excerpt: The Bracco Italiano is a breed of versatile gun dog that was bred and developed in Italy. The breed has a tendency to 'point' in the direction of prey and has therefore been given the nicknames of the 'Italian Pointer' and the 'Italian Pointer Dog.' It is believed that the breed was first developed sometime between the 4th and 5th century - making it one of the oldest breeds in existence. The Bracco Italiano is considered to be a mix of both the Segugio Italiano (a coursing hound) and the Asiatic Mastiff. There are two variations of the Bracco Italiano: the Pledmontese Pointer and the Lombard Pointer. The first variation, the Pledmontese Pointer, originated from Pledmont and has a lighter build and coat. The second variation, the Lombard Pointer, originated from Lombardy and has a more athletic build to allow it to combat the mountainous terrain of Lombardy. Traditionally, the Bracco Italiano was originally employed as a hunting hound by the Italian aristocracy. However in modern times, the Bracco Italiano is mainly found as a domestic family dog due to its people-loving temperament. The Bracco Italiano is also known to be a particularly friendly to children and other household pets, if it has been socialized properly. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian Greyhound is a small breed of dog that is a member of the sighthound typing. The breed is commonly referred to as 'Iggy' or simply as the 'I.G.' The breed's name, the Italian Greyhound, is a reference to the breed's popularity in Renaissance Italy. Mummified dogs, very similar to the Italian Greyhound, have been found in Egypt and clay pictorials of small Greyhound like dogs have been found in Pompeii - which means that the Italian Greyhound is most likely not a native Italian breed. The Italian Greyhound is believed to have originated over 2000 years ago. The Italian Greyhound is the smallest member of the sighthound typing and are considered to be a 'toy' breed. The Italian Greyhound has a deep chest, long slender legs and a long neck that tapers down to its small head. The breed's face is pointed in a similar fashion to a full sized Greyhound - the breed is actually aesthetically a miniature version of the Greyhound. While many Italian owners dispute the term 'Miniature Greyhound, ' the American Kennel Club states that the Italian Greyhound have the same genetic bloodline as the Greyhound. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Italian Greyhound. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Italian Greyhound with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Italian Greyhound makes a great companion dog as it enjoys the company of people. However the Italian Greyhound has an extremely fragile build which makes it not a decent choice for families with small children - as rough play is likely to harm an Italian Greyhound. The Italian Greyhound is also known to be incredibly loving, affectionate and loyal to its family unit. It is important to note that as a sporting breed, the Italian Greyhound has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Italian Greyhound has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. However due to their stamina in hot weather and eagerness to hunt, the Boykin Spaniel was quickly used for dove hunts and to hunt pheasants and other larger game. The Boykin Spaniel is actually the state dog of South Carolina. The Boykin Spaniel is slightly larger than the English Cocker Spaniel but has a much heavier body. The Chow Chow is thought to be one of the oldest recognizable dog breeds in the world! It is believed that the Chow Chow breed is the forefather to modern breeds such as the Pomeranian, Norwegian Elkhound, Keeshond and Samoyed. The breed's name in Chinese is 'Songshi Quan' which translates to 'Puffy-lion dog.' It is believed that the Chow Chow is one of the native dogs used as inspiration for the Foo dog, the traditional stone guardians found throughout China in front of palaces, Buddhist temples and places of importance. The Chow Chow was originally bred as a general purpose working dog and would have been commonly used for herding, hunting, guarding and cart pulling purposes. Some historians believe that the Chow Chow is described in ancient texts to have accompanied the Mongolian armies as they invaded southward into China - which would suggest that the Chow Chow has also been used for war purposes. Due to its working history the Chow Chow has a sturdily built square shaped body. The breed has two unique aesthetic features: its thick double coat and its uncommon blue-black tongue. The breed's coat comes in both a smooth and rough variation and comes in the following colorations: red, black, blue, fawn and cream. In modern times the breed is commonly found as a household pet. The breed as a whole is known to be incredibly loyal and affectionate towards their owners but wary of strangers. Due to their history as guard dogs they are also known to be fiercely protective over their family unit and families property. To avoid the potential for a fierce nature it is important that Chow Chow owners prioritize their dog's socialization with strangers and other dogs. The breed's name translates from the Italian words Cane, meaning 'dog, and Corso, meaning 'courtyard or guard.' The breed is also commonly referred to as the 'Italian Mastiff' and the 'Italian Corso.' The Cane Corso is a distant descendant of the Canis Pugnax, which was a breed used by the Romans as attack dogs during war time. Traditionally the Cane Corso was used to hunt and catch large prey such as boar, deer and bears as well as used by farmers to guard cattle. The breed was quickly employed as night watchdogs, keepers and bodyguards due to their high levels of intelligence, trainability and loyalty. In modern times the breed is mainly kept as a domesticated companion dog but also is still used for its original farming purposes. The Cane Corso has a similar appearance to the Italian Molosser, but has a much large build. The Cane Corso is muscly but is less bulky than other breeds within the Mastiff typing. It is important to note that the Cane Corso is not a breed recommended for novice dog owners! As previously mentioned the Cane Corso is both loyal, trainable and intelligent but it is also incredibly head strong. A Cane Corso puppy needs strong leadership and consistent training to ensure that it is a well behaved dog. It is also important to socialize your Cane Corso at an early age to encourage a more relaxed nature. Although not an aggressive breed, the Cane Corso is known to become highly protective over their family unit during serious threats. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Cane Corso's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Cane Corso, raising your Cane Corso from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Cane Corso: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Cane Corso," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Cane Corso owner. The Boxer is a cross between the Old English Bulldog and the now extinct Bullenbeisser. The purpose of the cross breeding was to eliminate the likelihood of having an all-white coat. The boxer has a smooth short-haired coat in the following three colorations: fawn, brindle and white. The breed has broad muscular shoulders, a relatively small short skull and a short muzzle. The Boxer has a large under bite and a strong jaw which makes it incredibly adept at holding onto prey. Its powerful jaw and sturdy body has lead the Boxer to be primarily used for herding and hunting purposes. Book excerpt: The Coton de Tulear is a small breed of dog that originates from Madagascar, as is actually the island's nation dog. The breed is named after the city of Tuléar, which is located in Madagascar, and for its cotton-like coat texture. The breed is believed to be a descendant of the Tenerife dog that has been mated with a breed native to Madagascar during the 16th century. The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon typing and is still closely related to the Bichon Tenerife and the Tenerife Terrier. The Coton de Tulear has always been a companion dog and has never been feral. Unlike most other breeds of dog developed in Madagascar, the Coton de Tulear has never been used to hunt wild boar or alligators, as its size and strength prove. The Coton de Tulear also has a nonexistent prey drive which further suggests that the breed has always been a companion dog. The breed's cotton-like coat is believed to be a result of a single gene mutation. The Coton de Tulear has a medium-to-long coat that is considered to be hair rather than fur. Despite having long hair the breed is considered to be hypoallergenic as it barely ever sheds once it is full grown - however, like the Poodle and Havanese, the Coton de Tulear will shed its puppy coat. The breed's coat comes in three standardize colorations: white, black and white, and tricolor (which is a mixture of black, white and tan). As a whole the Coton de Tulear is known to be a highly affectionate, intelligent and playful breed. They fit perfectly well into a family household environment. Despite their small size, it is recommended to keep a Coton de Tulear in a house, rather than an apartment, as they are very vocal and will grunt, bark and whine often while playing. Book excerpt: The American Pitbull Terrier is a medium-sized, solidly built, short-haired breed of dog. The Pitbull Terrier was created by cross breeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs, to produce a combination of the Terrier's gameness and the strength and athletic ability of the bulldog. The Pitbull Terrier was created in England and was introduced to the United States of America in the 18th century. The American Pitbull Terrier was traditionally used in bloodsports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and dog fighting. After these bloodsports were outlawed in the mid-19th century, the American Pitbull Terrier was employed to catch semi wild cattle, hogs and other ranch animals. Due to the strength and athleticism they were also used to hunt and drive livestock. In modern times, the American Pitbull Terrier is mainly used as a police dog, therapy dog or as a family companion. An average American Pitbull Terrier will be confident, eager to please and greet guests, loving, loyal and obedient. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
