Spent boyhood on a farm near Richmond, Indiana. Attended country school; a nearby high school; and Earlham College. "Explored" wheatfields and timber regions of northwest, and cattle ranges and mining camps of southwest United States. Came to Washington, D. C., early in 1890, and served as secretary to Sumner I. Kimball, U.S. Life Saving Service. Resigned in 1895 to take up inventing as a profession. Built the prototype of the motion picture projector now in every picture theatre the world over; developed the spiral-wound paraffined all-paper liquid container; and produced the first photographs by radio, and mechanism for viewing distant scenes by radio, i.e., television. Has over four hundred patents, American and foreign; and maintains a private laboratory in Washington. He is a member of the Franklin Institute, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and founder of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers. Has several times been honored by scientific and other bodies for original research and attainment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy's Book of New Inventions In the preparation of this book the author has tried to give an interesting account of the invention and workings of a few of the machines and mechanical processes that are making the history of our time more wonderful and more dramatic than that of any other age since the world began. For heroic devotion to science in the face of danger and the scorn of their fellowmen, there is no class who have made a better record than inventors. Most inventions, too, are far more than scientific calculation, and it is the human story of the various factors in this great age of invention that is here set forth for boy readers. New discoveries, or new applications of forces known to exist, illustrating some broad principle of science, have been the chief concern of the author in choosing the subjects to be taken up in the various chapters, so that it has been necessary to limit the scope of the book, except in one or two instances, to inventions that have come into general use within the last ten years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Achievement: Inventors With the many and superb tools now at our service, of which our fathers knew comparatively nothing - steam, electricity, the telegraph, tele phone, phonograph, and the camera - we and our descendants ought to accomplish even greater wonders than these./ As invention thus rises in the scale of importance to humanity, the history of the pioneers and, to the shame of mankind be it said, the martyrs of the art, becomes of in tense interest. In the annals of hero-worship the inventor of the perfecting press ought to stand before the great general, and Elias Howe should rank before Napoleon. Whitney, Howe, Morse, and Goodyear, to mention but a few of our Americans, contributed thousands of millions of dollars to the nation's wealth and received com paratively nothing in return. Their history sug gests as pertinent the inquiry whether our patent laws do not need a radical change. The bur den and cost of proving that an invention de serves no protection ought to fall upon who ever infringes a patent granted by the Govern ment. At present it is all the other way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Inventor: A Memoir of Matthew Edwards, Mathematical-Instrument Maker The first part of this Memoir was written more than two years ago, and intended as a contribution to a juvenile magazine. This will account for its juvenile tone. When written, it was laid aside; the idea of its publication being relinquished, from a fear that the effect might be injurious to the youth whose adventures it relates. That fear being removed by the sad event of his death, the Memoir, with additions, complet ing the brief story, is given to the public, in the hope that it may awaken kind sen timents and quicken good impulses in the breasts of readers, Whether youthful or more. Book excerpt: Long before Oliver Sacks became a distinguished neurologist and bestselling writer, he was a small English boy fascinated by metals–also by chemical reactions (the louder and smellier the better), photography, squids and cuttlefish, H.G. Wells, and the periodic table. In this endlessly charming and eloquent memoir, the author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Awakenings chronicles his love affair with science and the magnificently odd and sometimes harrowing childhood in which that love affair unfolded. In Uncle Tungsten we meet Sacks’ extraordinary family, from his surgeon mother (who introduces the fourteen-year-old Oliver to the art of human dissection) and his father, a family doctor who imbues in his son an early enthusiasm for housecalls, to his “Uncle Tungsten,” whose factory produces tungsten-filament lightbulbs. We follow the young Oliver as he is exiled at the age of six to a grim, sadistic boarding school to escape the London Blitz, and later watch as he sets about passionately reliving the exploits of his chemical heroes–in his own home laboratory. Uncle Tungsten is a crystalline view of a brilliant young mind springing to life, a story of growing up which is by turns elegiac, comic, and wistful, full of the electrifying joy of discovery.
