Latterly, I have been putting down the titles of such stories. When the list began to lengthen, it occurred to me, why not make a book for boys containing stories like that: stories written for grown-ups but also of interest to boys in their early teens. Such a collection of stories could not be made, however, without the consent of the authors and publishers, but since everybody loves a boy, I didn't have much trouble in convincing them they ought to grant permission to use their stories for such a purpose and, as a result, I am pleased to present to the boy readers of our country the Boy Scouts Book of Stories. Looking over the list, I find it covers pretty well the reading interests of boys. There are stories about boy scouts, school stories, stories of the sea and "wild west" stories, detective and mystery stories; most of all, though, a goodly number of humorous stories, and I am willing to hazard the guess there will be no regrets on the part of readers because the selections happen to abound in stories of the latter sort. How about it, boys?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Scouts Book of Stories Something over a year ago the Electric Railway Journal began the publication of its monthly "Mechanical and Engineering Numbers." The purpose of these has been to furnish articles of a character particularly helpful to the men who are responsible for the upkeep of the physical equipment of an electric railway property. Overhead line construction, tracks, buildings, power plants, substations, shops and rolling stock and its equipment have all been kept in mind. Arrangements were made with several specialists in different parts of the electric railway field for series of articles covering the fundamentals of track, power transmission, car equipment, car bodies and power plant operation; these were in addition to numerous articles on details of practice in the several lines mentioned. While all of the series are not yet complete, they have proved to date so valuable and comprehensive that the publishers of the paper have decided to reprint a number of the articles in the several series, particularly for the benefit of those who have not had the opportunity to read them month by month. Space limitations have prevented the reprinting of the entire groups of articles but a careful selection has been made of those which seem to have greatest immediate practical value. Readers of this volume are referred to the original series in each of the fields if further details are desired. The authors of the articles reprinted are all qualified by practical experience and theoretical study to furnish the kind of material desired by the workers in the "practical" departments of the electric railways. For want of a better word the term "practical" is used to designate those who have to do with physical equipment. Mr. Cram is in daily contact with the way and structure problems of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit System and had a wide experience before joining the staff of the B. R. T. Mr. Harte, construction engineer of the Connecticut Company, has particularly to do with new work on a large railway system, being especially interested in power transmission problems. Because the idealized Indian of Hiawatha has always stood as the model for outdoor life, woodcraft, and scouting, I called its brotherhood the "Woodcraft Indians." In 1904 I went to England to carry on the work there, and, knowing General R. S. S. Baden-Powell as the chief advocate of scouting in the British Army, invited him to cooperate in making the movement popular. Accordingly, in 1908 he organized his Boy Scout movement, incorporating the principles of the Indians with other ethical features bearing on savings banks, fire drills, etc., as well as by giving it a partly military organization, and a carefully compiled and fascinating handbook. All of the last that is applicable in America has been included here, with due credit to General Sir Robert Baden-Powell, and combined with the Birch-Bark Roll. The present issue will constitute the Book of Organization. It will be followed by others, making a dictionary of Woodcraft, with descriptions of the common trees, herbs, flowers, etc., trailing or tracking, sign-language, bird-stuffing, emergency foods, first aid, lasso, boat-building, camp-fire songs and plays, and many other things that belong to camp and outdoor life.
