There he is rewarded for his courage and faith, and learns that the new king loves all creatures. Bernadette Watts' evocative illustrations bring the message of Christmas to life. "This story stresses that Jesus welcomes even the most lowly, and Watts' watercolors overlaid with crayon-like texture are appealing and rustic." –School Library Journal

It's supposed to make everything better. What they discover is that their new home in North Scalia holds danger and the deepest kind of intolerance. It starts when Thomas is only seven. His younger sister, Grace, gets a simple cough. In impoverished South Scalia, advanced medical care is scarce, and Grace's cough soon turns into a deadly infection. There is no help for her in South Scalia. Grace's only hope lies across the desert in prosperous North Scalia. Thomas's parents know that they have to do everything they can for their daughter. Surely the inhabitants of North Scalia will not deny a four-year-old girl medical care. With the help of their beloved donkey, Grandma Jan, the Smiths set off across the desert. Their church and community have given all they can to help the Smiths on their quest. Will it be enough? The Smith family's experiences have eerie similarities to the current political climate in the United States. Daniel Washle's cautionary fable reveals the ugly underside of a society that claims to be free and just.

Book Synopsis A Donkey Is Not Stupid, a Donkey Can Think by : Pieter Ernst Smith
Download or read book A Donkey Is Not Stupid, a Donkey Can Think written by Pieter Ernst Smith and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new children's book A Donkey Is Not Stupid honors the donkey, which is an important part of life in the northwestern parts of South Africa, where author Pieter Ernst Smith was born. A little black boy named Thabo does not treat his donkey well. He and his donkey became equally stubborn in teaching each other a lesson. In the end, Thabo realizes how much his donkey means to him. He changes his ways and treats his donkey well. Then they became best friends. Apart from guiding kids on how to treat animals, I also want to tell people what a remarkable animal a donkey actually is, and to correct some misconceptions about donkeys, Smith says. I grew up on a farm in South Africa. The workers on the farm were allowed to have donkeys. Most of them treated their donkeys well, but there were always the ones who ill treated and sometimes abused their donkeys (and other animals). The author believes that donkeys are sensitive and intelligent animals, as well as good companions. The story is nicely embedded in the rural black culture in South Africa. First-time author Pieter Ernst Smith worked for the South African Broadcasting Corporation. He then taught English in South Korea, and is now an estate agent in Johannesburg, South Africa. He wrote this book to show his respect for the animals. In Upington in South Africa, there is a statue in honor of the great contribution of donkeys in the region. He has written the next book in this series. Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/ADonkeyIsNotStupid.htm
