Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can London’s lady champion fight for love? As London’s undefeated women’s boxer, Bess Abbott has the scars—both inside and out—to prove it. But when one of her boxing students, Violet, needs protection, Bess Abbott’s rock hard heart cracks open. And when a handsome blacksmith comes along, giving her compliments and treating her, well, like a woman, Bess doesn’t know what to do. She’s on the ropes in the face of his affections. Os Worley was a child when he became an accidental stow-away. He grew up not knowing the family or the island that inflected his accent. His only memory of his mother is a head bent, hands working a stitch, a voice humming a melody. Now that he has his own foundry, and his own apprentice, he’s come to London to find the woman attached to this impression. His heart is already tempered and quenched, focused on his goal—but a lady boxer threatens to recast his love in her own image. As Os and Bess face off, will they toe the line or retreat to their corners?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embodying Black Experience is an interdisciplinary work of cultural history and theory that looks at present-day effects of past experiences of the black body through the performances of various artists and athletes, including boxer Muhammad Ali, playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and choreographer Bill T. Jones, as well as artists and photographers. Harvey Young does close readings of these performances and offers what he calls a "third space between racial essentialism and racial pluralism" by engaging with a number of critical and theoretical debates, expanding on the writings of Stuart Hall, Henry Louis Gates, and Homi Bhabha. In so doing, he also challenges the work of Paul Gilroy, while incorporating the theories of Fanon, Merleau-Ponty, Lacan, and Bourdieu. The people profiled stand up and stand tall as they employ performance (including the performance of stillness) to challenge racializing projections: Ali uses it to refuse induction into the U.S. Army. Robbie McCauley stages it with the aim of reactivating the memories of her great-great-grandparents. James Cameron uses the still photographs of previous lynching campaigns and a souvenir from his own near-lynching to establish an archive of the horrors of U.S. racial violence. Harvey Young is Assistant Professor of Theatre, Performance Studies, and Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking study of the development of form in eighteenth-century aesthetics In this original work, Abigail Zitin proposes a new history of the development of form as a concept in and for aesthetics. Her account substitutes women and artisans for the proverbial man of taste, asserting them as central figures in the rise of aesthetics as a field of philosophical inquiry in eighteenth-century Europe. She shows how the idea of formal abstraction so central to conceptions of beauty in this period emerges from the way practitioners think about craft and skill across the domestic, industrial, and so-called high arts. Zitin elegantly maps the complex connections among aesthetics, form, and formalism, drawing out the understated presence of practice in the writings of major eighteenth-century thinkers including Locke, Addison, Burke, and Kant. This new take on an old story ultimately challenges readers to reconsider form and why it matters.
