The prophecies of Jeremiah require such an arrangement almost more than any other book in the Old Canon. Owing to the blending of history and prophecy found here, separation and replacing are desirable. The particular epochs around which Jeremiah's activity gathered are well marked; and these should be clearly stated. There is also to be traced a progress and advance in the thought of the prophet, as he moves on from the more hopeful position he assumed in the early reformation of Josiah, through the teaching of the Law Book, to the more distinctly spiritual, with its exalted idealism, in the prophetic forecasting of the future days. As a prophet, Jeremiah is one of the noblest figures in Old Testament history. Living at a time of transition, his life has an almost tragic interest. As a teacher, his religious influence was immense, and in many points touches our modern spirit. Many of the Psalms, the Book of Lamentations, as also that of Job, have been ascribed to him as their author. But for none of this is there evidence sufficiently strong. And though manifestly exposed to great trials, he appears not so much a "weeping prophet" as a "man of God," conserving true religion, moulding "the dialect of stated prayer," and affording much material, and many a suggestion, for those psalms that some have traced to him. We should like, however, to take this opportunity of clearing up a misconception which has arisen with some of our readers. It has been asked whether it is not the case that the division into lines, and their position on the page, are not purely arbitrary, and, if so, it is suggested that these have no value in expressing the meaning of the prophet. In a sense the first implication is true, but practically it really misses the point. The facts, to put the matter plainly, are these. The division into lines at all is, so far as Hebrew is concerned, a mere modern convention, to render it analogous to other poetry. In all poetry lining is a convenient practical device for marking the natural pauses. The Hebrew grammarians, the Massoretes, who inserted the Hebrew vowels into the older consonantal text in the eighth century A.D., or thereabouts, adopted another device. They signified the degree of pause by marking the last accented syllable of the clause with various kinds of what are called disjunctive accents. First among them we must place the fact that the earlier prophets, aided by the chastening in uence of the Exile, had, to a large extent, done their work. There was no longer the gross idolatrous worship, with its licentious orgies and often cruel rites, to contend against. Again, social and political conditions had changed. Israel is no longer a kingdom, but a colony. The community is poor and feeble, cut off from all the habits and prestige of their past, and beginning the rudiments of life again in hard struggle with nature and hostile tribes.'2 There was no longer a body of plutocrats grinding the face of the poor, nor a more or less despotic king, from whose selfishness and injustice an appeal might be made to the ideal anointed one, the Messiah that was to come.3 Outwardly there was no great foreign invader, in whom the prophets could foresee the instrument of Divine vengeance.
