Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tender and compellling memoir of the author's grandparents, their literary salon, and a way of life that is no more. The House of Twenty Thousand Books is the story of Chimen Abramsky, an extraordinary polymath and bibliophile who amassed a vast collection of socialist literature and Jewish history. For more than fifty years Chimen and his wife, Miriam, hosted epic gatherings in their house of books that brought together many of the age’s greatest thinkers. The atheist son of one of the century’s most important rabbis, Chimen was born in 1916 near Minsk, spent his early teenage years in Moscow while his father served time in a Siberian labor camp for religious proselytizing, and then immigrated to London, where he discovered the writings of Karl Marx and became involved in left-wing politics. He briefly attended the newly established Hebrew University in Jerusalem, until World War II interrupted his studies. Back in England, he married, and for many years he and Miriam ran a respected Jewish bookshop in London’s East End. When the Nazis invaded Russia in June 1941, Chimen joined the Communist Party, becoming a leading figure in the party’s National Jewish Committee. He remained a member until 1958, when, shockingly late in the day, he finally acknowledged the atrocities committed by Stalin. In middle age, Chimen reinvented himself once more, this time as a liberal thinker, humanist, professor, and manuscripts’ expert for Sotheby’s auction house. Journalist Sasha Abramsky re-creates here a lost world, bringing to life the people, the books, and the ideas that filled his grandparents’ house, from gatherings that included Eric Hobsbawm and Isaiah Berlin to books with Marx’s handwritten notes, William Morris manuscripts and woodcuts, an early sixteenth-century Bomberg Bible, and a first edition of Descartes’s Meditations. The House of Twenty Thousand Books is a wondrous journey through our times, from the vanished worlds of Eastern European Jewry to the cacophonous politics of modernity. The House of Twenty Thousand Books includes 43 photos.

Kathy Izard was volunteering at Charlotte’s Urban Ministry Center when an unlikely meeting with a homeless man changed the course of her life. She realized that serving at the soup kitchen was feeding her soul, but not actually solving the needs of the homeless population. Rather than brush it off and avoid what she now felt called to take on, she quit her job and took on what seemed like an insurmountable task—building housing for Charlotte’s homeless. Woven together with this uplifting story of social action is Kathy’s personal struggle with faith, forgiveness and fulfillment. In telling her story, Kathy invites you to consider rewriting your own. What’s calling you? As crazy at it seems, it may be crazier not to try. This book will push you to do so much more than you ever thought possible.

Book excerpt: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior: HOMES. Moheb Soliman traces the coasts of the Great Lakes region with poems, exploring the nature of belonging in relation to land and the formation of identity along borders. Moheb Soliman's HOMES maps the shoreline of the Great Lakes from the rocky cliffs of Duluth, Minnesota, to the spray of Niagara Falls and back again. This poetic travelogue offers an intimate perspective on an immigrant experience as Soliman drives his Corolla past exquisite vistas and abandoned mines, through tourist towns and midwestern suburbs, searching for a place to claim as home. Against the backdrop of environmental destruction and a history of colonial oppression, the vitality of Soliman's language brings a bold ecopoetic lens to bear on the relationship between transience and belonging in the world's largest, most porous borderland.

Book excerpt: 2023 Independent Publisher Book Award GOLD in Environmental/Ecology 2022 National Outdoor Book Award Winner in Natural History Literature "A Thousand Trails Home is a book of supernal majesty, a book to break and restore your heart. Seth Kantner’s devotion to the living pulse and unity of the skein of wonder that is the Alaskan wilderness haunts and inspires me." -- Louise Erdrich, author of The Night Watchman Bestselling, award-winning author of Ordinary Wolves, a debut novel Publisher’s Weekly called “a tour de force” Conservation-based story of changing Arctic from an on-the-ground perpective Features full-color photography throughout A stunningly lyrical firsthand account of a life spent hunting, studying, and living alongside caribou, A Thousand Trails Home encompasses the historical past and present day, revealing the fragile intertwined lives of people and animals surviving on an uncertain landscape of cultural and climatic change sweeping the Alaskan Arctic. Author Seth Kantner vividly illuminates this critical story about the interconnectedness of the Iñupiat of Northwest Alaska, the Western Arctic Caribou Herd, and the larger Arctic region. This story has global relevance as it takes place in one of the largest remaining intact wilderness ecosystems on the planet, ground zero for climate change in the US. This compelling and complex tale revolves around the politics of caribou, race relations, urban vs. rural demands, subsistence vs. sport hunting, and cultural priorities vs. resource extraction—a story that requires a fearless writer with an honest voice and an open heart.

MY LIFE & 1,000 HOUSES: Failing Forward to Financial Freedom MY LIFE & 1,000 HOUSES: 200+ Ways to Find Bargain Properties This book, MY LIFE & 1,000 HOUSES: The Art of Owner Financing, is an insider's look at a very powerful strategy for building wealth quickly. In this book you're going to learn... - How to get paid to build your cash flow. - How to generate cash flow without being a landlord. - How to get paid six ways on your deals. - How to recognize what properties are good to owner finance. - How to make money on the properties that aren't good to owner finance. - How to find private money for your deals. - How to sell notes with little to no discount. ...and much, much more! Tired of being a landlord? Are you tired of all the late night phone calls about leaking toilets, busted hot water heaters, broken air conditioners, and on and on and on? If so, this book is a must read! For years the gurus of the day have been selling us the "Buy & Hold" myth. Most landlords have fooled themselves into thinking they're making money. Year after year would-be-retirees have to postpone their retirement because the rental income they calculated on paper never makes it to their tax return. Mitch can show you exactly why this is happening and how to stop it from happening by using a strategy that is less known and grossly misunderstood. The owner financing strategy changes everything! Change your property's value. Change your community for the better. Change your buyer's life, and change your personal financial situation in the process. All kinds of doors open when we stop using broken down traditional techniques and start thinking outside the box. And best of all, 90% of the deals are done with none of your own money! The strategies in this book are mind-blowing! Mitch believes that real estate investing is a tremendous strategy for acquiring wealth. He has helped new investors find their place; He has helped veteran investors re-invent themselves by BECOMING THE BANK! Book excerpt: A revealing and intimate portrait of a president, husband, and father as seen through the lens of the first official White House photographer. Cecil Stoughton’s close rapport with President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy gave him extraordinary access to the Oval Office, the Kennedys’ private quarters and homes, state dinners, cabinet meetings, diplomatic trips, and family holidays. Drawing on Stoughton’s unparalleled body of photographs, most rarely or never before reproduced, and supported by a deeply thoughtful narrative by political historian Richard Reeves, Portrait of Camelot is an unprecedented portrayal of the power, politics, and warmly personal aspects of Camelot’s 1,036 days. “Reveals an intimate account of a very public figure...the rare archive of images features the president during state dinners and cabinet meetings at the White House to family holidays and vacations at their private homes.” —Vanity Fair
