Book excerpt: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." This oft-misunderstood phrase, which forms the basis for Crowley's practice of Magick, is found in The Book of the Law. Dictated to Crowley in Cairo between noon and 1:00p.m. on three successive days in April 1904, The Book of the Law is the source book and key for Crowley students and for the occult in general. The holy text that forms the basis of Crowley's belief system, Thelema, was transmitted to him by the entity known as Aiwass over the course of three fateful April days in 1904. With his wife Rose as the medium for what would become known as the Cairo Working, Crowley dutifully transcribed the communications on hotel stationery. This work contains the corrected text of the 1938 edition with a facsimile of the handwritten manuscript.

Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1938 American Edition. "Liber AL vel Legis' or "The Book of the Law" is the central sacred text of Thelema, written by Aleister Crowley in Cairo, Egypt in the year 1904. Crowley says that the author was an entity named Aiwass, whom he later referred to as his personal Holy Guardian Angel (or "Higher Self"). The interpretation of the often cryptic text is generally considered a matter for the individual reader. The general method that Crowley used to interpret the obscurities of the book was the Qabalah. This edition also reproduces the original manuscript in Crowley's hand from which the printed version is composed.

Book excerpt: The Unknown God gives a view into the twentieth-century North American occult underground influenced by the English occultist and prophet Aleister Crowley, as told through the biography of his disciple in the USA, Wilfred Talbot Smith (1885--1957). It draws on accounts from Smith's social network, which encompassed Caltech rocket scientist Jack Parsons, the Rosicrucian leader H. Spencer Lewis, the Hollywood actor John Carradine, and gay liberationist Harry Hay. Students of esoteric Freemasonry, the Golden Dawn, the Theosophical Society, and the Crowley-based occult orders will find The Unknown God a fascinating resource--this is the book that connects them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Aleister Crowley? Magus, poet, sexual athlete, mountaineer, traitor, drug fiend, and Prophet of a New Aeon - he has been described as all these things. Dubbed "The Wickedest Man in the World" by the British press, Crowley and his story have captured the imagination of occultists, rock stars - including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, who included his portrait on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - free spirits, and science fiction aficionados for decades. Compiled from Sandy Robertson's extensive personal collection of Crowleyana, The Illustrated Beast includes a short biography, black-and-white photographs of Crowley and his contemporaries, excerpts from his writings, and commentary on the Wanderer of the Waste. From his paradoxical childhood to his stormy involvement with The Golden Dawn, from his adventurous travels and published works to his controversial Italian Abbey and lifelong heroin addiction, this scrapbook offers readers a glimpse of the man, his works, and his lasting impact on the occult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are a few books on Thelema in print, they are mostly by Crowley himself. Some have said it is time for a contemporary to write on Thelema. To those, Da'Neos has answered. For him, the story did not end in 1947, and he represents the forefront of the new Thelemic movement. Da'Neos is that first brave soul who dares write where others keep silent. He is anything but timid or apologetic. Although he looks at Thelema in light of the 21st century, he stays true to the original ideas of Crowley . Da'Neos writes about how he came to write this book, in spiritual terms. He describes how he came to dedicate himself to a spiritual life, and the various systems of belief that he examined and lived through before coming to Thelema. It is a story of becoming, including the ramifications for holding certain ideas. He is the first Thelemic author to fully write about the Three Aeons, a subject that has been left in pitiful shape for many years. Da'Neos examines the current of spiritual development that has advanced through history, and how this spiritual current has been materialized through exoteric belief systems. Da'Neos describes what "conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel" is truly like. Even Crowley himself only hints at it. He describes, in a gripping narrative, of how he came to find his True Self, and the results of that finding. This is only a small sampling of the many areas Da'Neos covers. He goes on to write in detail on Thelemic ritual, the entire development of the Kabbala, examinations of the true force behind Christianity, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Dickinson, best known as the lead vocalist of Iron Maiden, seems to have unbounded energy, ideas and imagination. He mesmerises thousands of fans with his integrity, vitality and wit. Wouldn’t it be great to know what makes him tick? Those who know Bruce Dickinson know: this man doesn’t do things by halves. Thus, he was voted a living example of a polymath by Intelligent Life magazine in 2009. Bruce has been recognised as a singer, a TV presenter, a record producer, a pilot and a fencer. Therefore, it should be no surprise that his lyrics also stand out. His subject matters are challenging – he reflects on life and death, freedom and destiny, man and God, sex and religion. Asked about the complexity of his lyrics, Bruce said in an interview: “I ask myself, does it rock? And if it does, who gives a s**t what’s it’s about? All information’s there if people choose to dig for it.” The treasures you can find are absolutely worth the digging. Bruce also added: “And if they don’t then it doesn’t matter, so long as they enjoy it.” Bruce Dickinson is an undisputed master of heavy metal; his voice and music are a natural force. The subjects are extremely interesting and Bruce succeeds in artfully getting to the heart of them. This is why this book is dedicated to Bruce as a songwriter, as a poet of lyrics, some of which represent little masterpieces – even without music. They point beyond themselves by means of powerful imagery. Their ambiguity holds some surprises. The best way to get to know the real Bruce Dickinson probably is to have a beer with him. But he admitted that through his lyrics “you can certainly maybe get an idea of what is going {sic} on with myself,” and that’s why all fans of Bruce, and Iron Maiden, should read this book.
