Covering the background, conception, design, production and aftermath of the Ferrari 288 GTO, this book details the prototypes, early production cars, mainstream production cars in their various guises, and the Evolution cars, originally built for Group B racing. Pictures include the 1984 Geneva Salon where the car debuted, the first ever GTO Reunion in 1985, current salon and action images, right up to the 25th Anniversary Ferrari 288 GTO Reunion held in Monterey, California, in 2009. Also featured are the actual factory production approval sheets by Leonardo Fioravanti and Nicola Materazzi, as filed with the Italian government. You will also find a chassis by chassis register of every 288 GTO built, including destroyed prototypes, production cars, and GTO Evoluziones - in fact all 284 cars ever built. The Ferrari 288 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato), was the car that Enzo Ferrari expected to cause "love at first sight", with its iconic body styling by Pininfarana design chief, Leonardo Fioravante. Zweisprachig: Deutsch/Englisch More than an illustrated book on a car: Portrait of a Ferrari legend from the 80s The quality of some sports cars can be deduced from their famous owners. With the Ferrari 288 GTO there are even three Formula 1 drivers among them: Michele Alboreto, Keke Rosberg and Niki Lauda. Sheer coincidence? Unlikely. In this fine box motorsport photographer Stefan Bogner captures the classy design vocabulary of the 288 GTO and presents some of the rare originals in a large-format illustrated book. The extra factbook with texts by brand expert Jürgen Lewandowski has all the well-known and lesser-known information on the rare Ferrari classic. . Over 200 photos of the Ferrari: All designs, years and special models spectacularly staged by Stefan Bogner . Expert texts by brand expert Jürgen Lewandowski, bilingual in German and English The 288 GTO - Rare dreamcar and milestone of the Ferrari history When in 1984 Ferrari presented the GTO, its racing look and forceful performance data attracted numerous customers. But just 272 of the Italian sports car were built within two years. The last one was handed over personally by Enzo Ferrari to Niki Lauda. In spite of all that the 288 GTO was never used as a racing car. Although its tubular steel frame, the longitudinally mounted twin turbo V8 and 400 PS made it competitive. Even today it achieves top prices at auctions. Delve into a piece of automobile history and experience one of the rarest Ferrari models!

Book excerpt: While 1984 was not an easy year for Ferrari in Formula 1, the same cannot be said for the production cars, with the dramatic return of two of the most iconic and evocative names in the history of the Prancing Horse: Testarossa - already featured in a monograph in this series - and GTO, the new Ferrari grand tourer, the latest in the long and glorious line of eight-cylinder cars which was launched at that year's Geneva motor show. The 288 GTO was derived directly from the 308 GTB Speciale prototype prepared by Pininfarina in 1977, in effect a "pumped up" 308 with even more aggressive bodywork and powered by a muscular 2.8-litre V8 capable of delivering around 400 hp, good for a top speed of a little over 300 kph. Following the F40 and the Testarossa books in this series, this monograph on 288 GTO retraces the technical and stylistic genesis of the supercar, with contributions from several of the artificers of the model. All this is accompanied by invaluable materials, many of which were previously unpublished, drawn from the archives of the magazine Quattroruote.

Book excerpt: First seen as the course car at the 1960 Le Mans 24 hour race, the elegant Ferrari 250 Gran Turismo 2+2 Pininfarina, or GTE as it has become known, was Ferrari's first four-seat production car and an outstanding commercial success, underwriting the company's racing activity. Built upon the same running gear as the iconic Ferrari 250 two-seaters, the GTE continued in production until 1963, by which time 954 examples had been built. Initially popular as a "gentleman's express," the car was typically finished in conservative colours which emphasised its stunning lines. But after a few years and several owners they were sadly often neglected and came to be regarded simply as donors upon which to build replicas of other Ferraris. Thanks to the efforts of a number of enthusiastic owners who have dedicated themselves to maintaining, restoring and preserving these wonderful cars, about half of them still exist today as GTEs, valued for their beauty and history. In researching this definitive history of the model, the author consulted with respected Ferrari historians, enjoying access to their archives. He traveled extensively to view and document more than 125 examples of these cars around the world. The book is published in a limited edition of 750 copies to celebrate the 60th birthday of the three Series of the 250 GTE.

It's the ultimate gearhead's bucket list and poses the challenge: How many have you driven? Whoever coined the phrase "getting there is half the fun" must have owned a sports car. And the wag who suggested that "it's the journey not the destination"? Probably driving a Lotus or MG at the time. From towering icons like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Corvette to everyman sportsters from Triumph, MG, Sunbeam, and Miata to oddballs like Crosley, Sabra, and DB, sports cars inspire passion and strong opinions as few other vehicles on the road can. In one beautiful book, long-time Road & Truck magazine chief photographer John Lamm, along with other top motoring contributors, gives the reader illustrated profiles of every sports car you've ever dreamed of driving! Now, imagine if you could drive a different sports car—any sports car—every single day for a year. Which would you choose?
