Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel: With Introduction and Notes The primary object of these Commentaries is to be exegetical, to interpret the meaning of each book of the Bible in the light of modem knowledge to English readers. The Editors will not deal, except subordinately, with questions of textual criticism or philology; but taking the English text in the Revised Version as their basis, they will aim at combining a hearty acceptance of critical principles with loyalty to the Catholic Faith. The series will be less elementary than the Cambridge Bible for Schools, less critical than the International Critical Commentary, less didactic than the Expositor's Bible; and it is hoped that it may be of use both to theological students and to the clergy, as well as to the growing number of educated laymen and laywomen who wish to read the Bible intelligently and reverently. Each commentary will therefore have (i) An Introduction stating the bearing of modem criticism and research upon the historical character of the book, and drawing out the contribution which the book, as a whole, makes to the body of religious truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel: With Notes and Introduction The Book Of Ezekiel is less suited than most others to be the subject Of merely popular annotation. The state Of the d104 is such that frequent references to it as well as to the Versions are unavoidable. It was no part Of the purpose of the following Notes to construct a d104; the thing aimed at has been to shew the general meaning of the Book, and, if possible, the connexion Of its parts with one another; but the readings of the LXX. Have generally been adduced when they presented any important deviation from the Hebrew. In the later chapters the ms. Of which the Greek is a translation was in many instances more correct than that of which the present Hebrew is a copy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ezekiel and the Book of His Prophecy: An Exposition The views embodied in his interpretations, or would entirely approve of the form which he has given to his Exposition. Some, he has observed, have sought to account for the latter by supposing it to have been, in the first instance, preached to a congregation. In this, he takes leave to state, they are mistaken; and it is on principle, and from a regard merelv to what he thinks should be found in an Exposition of the Word of God, and in particular of the writings of Ezekiel, that he has introduced so much of the spiritual and practical element. But, as this point has been noticed in the Introduction, it is needless to say more on it at present. If the volume shall be made, by the Divine blessing, instrumental in promoting a more exact acquaintance with this portion of Prophecy, or advancing the study of the. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophecies of the Prophet Ezekiel Elucidated The time is no longer distant when every pastor worthy of his calling will make it a rule of life to read his chapter daily, as in the original text of the New Testament, so also in that of the Old Testament. The exposition of Scripture must meet such a laudable custom, which is formed even in education. There is a want of such expositions of the books of the Old Testament, as truly correspond with the requirements of the clerical office. The author has here earnestly aimed at this object. How far he has succeeded it is not for him to judge, but for those for whom he has written. It will depend very much on this, whether he has succeeded in edifying without going out of his proper sphere by the introduction of ascetic considerations. Book Synopsis Two Books of Ezekiel by : Ingrd E. Lilly
Download or read book Two Books of Ezekiel written by Ingrd E. Lilly and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek papyrus codex 967 (p967) manifests a different edition of Ezekiel from the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT). This study defines and uses a "manuscript approach" to argue that p967 qualifies as a variant literary edition of Ezekiel. Methodologically, the approach is rooted in text-critical analysis, clarifies p967's textual significance, and shows that its text usually reflects the Old Greek translation and in many cases an early Hebrew edition of Ezekiel. The literary analysis of p967 and MT procedes according to sets of variants that participate in literary Tendenzen, adopting the principle of coherence found in Literaturkritik. In so doing, the literary analysis identifies the scope and literary character of p967 and MT's meaningful textual variants. Finally, the codicological analysis explores p967's manuscript as an historical and sociological artifact, focusing especially on what the paratextual marks reveal about the interpretive interests of a 3rd century CE community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel: Translated From the Original Hebrew; With a Commentary, Critical, Philological, and Exegetical IN preparing the following work for the press the author has been greatly encouraged by the kind reception given to his previous labors on the Prophets by theological readers both in this country and Amer ica. It has been a satisfaction to him to find that the principles on which he has conducted his exegetical inquiries have been generally approved of by those most competent to judge. To these principles he still adheres; convinced that whatever there abounds of symbol, vision, enigma, and parable in the compositions of Ezekiel, there runs through them a vein of historical reality which serves as a safeguard against the vagaries of the mystical school of interpretation.
