Download or read book Gin written by Lesley Jacobs Solmonson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother’s Milk, Mother’s Ruin, and Ladies’ Delight. Dutch Courage and Cuckold’s Comfort. These evocative nicknames for gin hint that it has a far livelier history than the simple and classic martini would lead you to believe. In this book, Lesley Jacobs Solmonson journeys into gin’s past, revealing that this spirit has played the role of both hero and villain throughout history. Taking us back to gin’s origins as a medicine derived from the aromatic juniper berry, Solmonson describes how the Dutch recognized the berry’s alcoholic possibilities and distilled it into the whiskey-like genever. She then follows the drink to Britain, where cheap imitations laced with turpentine and other caustic fillers made it the drink of choice for poor eighteenth-century Londoners. Eventually replaced by the sweetened Old Tom style and later by London Dry gin, its popularity spread along with the British Empire. As people today once again embrace classic cocktails like the gimlet and the negroni, gin has reclaimed its place in the world of mixology. Featuring many enticing recipes, Gin is the perfect gift for cocktail aficionados and anyone who wants to know whether it should be shaken or stirred.
Book Synopsis The MicroDistillers' Handbook Volume 2 by : Gavin D Smith
Download or read book The MicroDistillers' Handbook Volume 2 written by Gavin D Smith and published by Paragraph Publishing . This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artisan and micro distilling continue on an upward trajectory. In 2018 the UK had 205 distilleries, but that figure has now risen to 246 after a further 41 opened in 2019. The number of distilleries in the UK has now grown year on year since 2011, when there were just 110 distillers in the country. Consumers are now willing to pay for authentic smaller brands was said to have driven demand for ‘craft’ spirits, which has led to the increase in distillery numbers, “increasing popularity of flavoured spirits” being a major driver, with new brands creating flavoured expressions such as lemon sherbet, pear drop and Parma Violet. Gin sales in 2019 were recorded at over £1 billion. The growth in British craft distilling has not stopped yet. Whilst gin sales growth is beginning to taper off, new distillers are still entering the market and M&A (mergers and acquisitions) deals are being completed. “The trend for authentic local artisan food and drink looks to be here to stay, and that will continue to tempt entrepreneurs and investors into the craft spirits industry. “While artisan gin has been the big growth driver over the last five years, there is also strong interest in some of the smaller artisan whisky distillers in Scotland.”
Book Synopsis The Book of Gin by : Richard Barnett
Download or read book The Book of Gin written by Richard Barnett and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An absorbing popular history of one of history’s most popular drinks.” —Booklist Gin has been a drink of kings infused with crushed pearls and rose petals, and a drink of the poor flavored with turpentine and sulfuric acid. Born in alchemists’ stills and monastery kitchens, its earliest incarnations were juniper flavored medicines used to prevent plague, ease the pains of childbirth, and even to treat a lack of courage. In The Book of Gin, Richard Barnett traces the life of this beguiling spirit, once believed to cause a “new kind of drunkenness.” In the eighteenth century, gin-crazed debauchery (and class conflict) inspired Hogarth’s satirical masterpieces “Beer Street” and “Gin Lane.” In the nineteenth century, gin was drunk by Napoleonic War naval heroes, at lavish gin palaces, and by homesick colonials, who mixed it with their bitter anti-malarial tonics. In the early twentieth century, the illicit cocktail culture of Prohibition made gin—often dangerous bathtub gin—fashionable again. And today, with the growth of small-batch distilling, gin has once-again made a comeback. Wide-ranging, impeccably researched, and packed with illuminating stories, The Book of Gin is lively and fascinating, an indispensable history of a complex and notorious drink. “The Book of Gin is full of history that will make you grin . . . An enchanting read.” —Cooking by the Book
Book Synopsis Semiotics of Drink and Drinking by : Paul Manning
Download or read book Semiotics of Drink and Drinking written by Paul Manning and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drink, as an embodied semiotic and material form, mediates social life. This book examines the fundamental nature of drink through a series of modular but connected ethnographic discussions. It looks at the way the materiality of a specific drink (coffee, wine, water, beer) serves as the semiotic medium for a genre of sociability in a specific time and place. As an explicitly comparative semiotic study, the book uses familiar and unfamiliar case studies to show how drinks with similar material properties are semiotically organized into very different drinking practices, including ethnographic examples as diverse as the relation of coffee to talk (in ordering at Starbucks). Further chapters look at the dryness of gin in relation to the modern cocktail party and the embedding of beer brands in the ethnographic imagination of the nation. Rather than treat drinks as mere props in the exclusively human drama of the social, the book promotes them to actors on the stage.

Book Synopsis Fermented Beverage Production by : Andrew G.H. Lea
Download or read book Fermented Beverage Production written by Andrew G.H. Lea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of fermented beverages is nowadays a technically sophisticated business. Many people outside it, however, even if they are familiar with the food industry overall, fail to appreciate just what advances have been made in the last twenty or thirty years. In part this is due to the blandishments of advertising, which tend to emphasise the traditional image for mass market promotion at the expense of the technological skills, and in part due to a lack of readily available information on the production pro cesses themselves. This book attempts to remedy the balance and to show that, far from being a quaint and rustic activity, the production of fermented beverages is a skilled and sophisticated blend of tradition and technology. We have chosen to organise the book principally by individual beverages or groups of beverages, with the addition of a number of general chapters to cover items of common concern such as fermentation biochemistry, adulteration, filtration and flavour aspects. While we have tried to eliminate excessive duplication of information, we make no apologies for the fact that certain important aspects (e. g. the role of sulphur dioxide in wine and cidermaking) are discussed on more than one occasion. This only serves to underline their importance and to ensure that each chapter is moderately self-contained.
