Book Synopsis Can the Monster Speak? by : Paul B. Preciado
Download or read book Can the Monster Speak? written by Paul B. Preciado and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Preciado's controversial 2019 lecture at the École de la Cause Freudienne annual conference, published in a definitive translation for the first time. In November 2019, Paul Preciado was invited to speak in front of 3,500 psychoanalysts at the École de la Cause Freudienne's annual conference in Paris. Standing in front of the profession for whom he is a "mentally ill person" suffering from "gender dysphoria," Preciado draws inspiration in his lecture from Kafka's "Report to an Academy," in which a monkey tells an assembly of scientists that human subjectivity is a cage comparable to one made of metal bars. Speaking from his own "mutant" cage, Preciado does not so much criticize the homophobia and transphobia of the founders of psychoanalysis as demonstrate the discipline's complicity with the ideology of sexual difference dating back to the colonial era--an ideology which is today rendered obsolete by technological advances allowing us to alter our bodies and procreate differently. Preciado calls for a radical transformation of psychological and psychoanalytic discourse and practices, arguing for a new epistemology capable of allowing for a multiplicity of living bodies without reducing the body to its sole heterosexual reproductive capability, and without legitimizing hetero-patriarchal and colonial violence. Causing a veritable outcry among the assembly, Preciado was heckled and booed and unable to finish. The lecture, filmed on smartphones, was published online, where fragments were transcribed, translated, and published with no regard for exactitude. With this volume, Can the Monster Speak? is published in a definitive translation for the first time.
Book Synopsis Time Is the Thing a Body Moves Through by : T Fleischmann
Download or read book Time Is the Thing a Body Moves Through written by T Fleischmann and published by Coffee House Press. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. G. Sebald meets Maggie Nelson in an autobiographical narrative of embodiment, visual art, history, and loss. How do the bodies we inhabit affect our relationship with art? How does art affect our relationship to our bodies? T Fleischmann uses Felix Gonzáles-Torres’s artworks—piles of candy, stacks of paper, puzzles—as a path through questions of love and loss, violence and rejuvenation, gender and sexuality. From the back porches of Buffalo, to the galleries of New York and L.A., to farmhouses of rural Tennessee, the artworks act as still points, sites for reflection situated in lived experience. Fleischmann combines serious engagement with warmth and clarity of prose, reveling in the experiences and pleasures of art and the body, identity and community.

Book Synopsis Every Body Talk by : Matthew Mittleman
Download or read book Every Body Talk written by Matthew Mittleman and published by . This book was released on 2021-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes language and lessons about protective factors for children to learn early to support sexual violence prevention. This book serves as a tool for caregivers and children to learn, question and discuss situations that may arise regarding boundaries and healthy ways to learn important skills in life. Research indicates that knowing the accurate terminology of private parts may make children less vulnerable to sexual abuse. It may help in a doctor's office when sharing medical issues. It may also help solve a crime and even prevent future abuse. Children who are a part of marginalized identity groups such as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, LGBTQ+ and children with disabilities, have higher rates of sexual violence and are even less likely to report their abuse. As adults, we must change the way we talk about body parts with even our youngest kids. And that is where this book comes in. This is as much for parents, guardians, and teachers as it is for children; it is here to help normalize all body parts, to open the conversation about respecting our bodies, and help tell children what to do if they are uncomfortable. We hope you enjoy this book from your head to your toes, and encourage the conversations that may come up with your little ones.

Book Synopsis If the Organs Could Speak by : Olaf Koob
Download or read book If the Organs Could Speak written by Olaf Koob and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘This book can help us trace the secrets of our own body, to see it as a wonder of creation, and to marvel at it time and again with reverence and gratitude...’ – Prof. Dr Volker Fintelmann At a time of increasing volatility in healthcare provision, we are all having to become more responsible for our own well-being. This book – an imaginative, practical and accessible guide to our inner organs – is written for anyone who wants to improve their health and develop resiliency against illness. Although trained as a medical doctor, Olaf Koob has the vision and experience of a holistic physician. He has surveyed diverse medical systems – orthodox medicine, naturopathy, homeopathy, Chinese, ayurvedic and anthroposophic medicine – and found their common substance. Using this knowledge, he relates the essence of each human organ: its position, colour, form, embryonic development, function and characteristic attributes. Thus, the organs begin to tell their own stories, revealing their ‘biography’, physiognomy and the illnesses they are prone to. Inspired by esoteric wisdom, Koob creates living images of the pancreas and the hormone system and shows how the spleen, liver, gall bladder, heart, kidneys, lungs and reproductive organs relate to the wider cosmos. He describes the nature of poison and detoxification, good and bad nutrition and the importance of secretion and elimination. If the Organs Could Speak is a unique work that enables us to think more creatively about our bodies and how they function, and to help us cope with crises, suffering and pain.
