Book excerpt: The Bobcat Mountain Murders follows the career of one Hamilton Smith, independent management consultant, Bon Vivant and amateur sleuth, into a trial relocation to an upscale retirement community in western Colorado. Here he is befriended by the vitriolic editor of the local weekly "four pager" and begins an admittedly hesitant search for someone to take the place of his recently deceased wife of thirty-nine years. Having been an active participant in the solution of an "executive suite" murder (Pride Dies in the End), our hero is less than disappointed when the little community is confronted with a series of pre-announced and crudely executed killings of certain controversial and coincidentally unmarried neighbors. Initial distractions include a homeless, "disturbed" youth who performs odd jobs within the gates of Bobcat Mountain, ongoing negotiations between the owning corporation and a gas well exploration company as well as distinct religious connotations in the choice of victims. As events develop, Smith's painfully deliberate romance with another newcomer is plagued by the dawning realization that she is not what she professes to be and is in fact, a viable candidate for consideration as the mystery killer! His suspicions become elevated by an investigative trip back to his native New England. Assuming his reluctant chain of reasoning to be correct, Smith becomes logically certain of the identity of the killer's next intended victim. With the blessing and assistance of the local sheriff, Smith and his editor cohort team up to protect the unwary target at the annual community dinner-dance ¿ only to be thwarted by an overlooked suspect. Acting swiftly, the contrite amateur is successful in exposing the real killer. His relief at ending the mini-reign of terror proves however, to be short lived!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 1970, the body of 24-year-old Nancy Morgan was found inside a government-owned car in Madison County, North Carolina. It had been four days since anyone had heard from the bubbly, hard-working brunette who had moved to the Appalachian community less than a year prior as an organizer for Volunteers in Service to America. At the time of her death, her tenure in the Tar Heel State was just weeks from ending, her intentions set on New York and nursing school and a new life that she would never see. The initial investigation was thwarted by inept police work, jurisdictional confusion, and the influence of local corruption. Fourteen years would pass before an arrest in the case would be made, but even then, a pall would be cast over the veracity of the evidence. Met Her on the Mountain is the culmination of former Los Angeles Times staff writer Mark Pinsky's efforts to solve the 40-year-old mystery once and for all. An exhaustive piece of investigative journalism, Pinsky's work, now with a new postscript, dissects this modern Southern Gothic tale and takes readers on a journey to convince them that the truth of Morgan's murder is within reach.

Book excerpt: Murder is traumatic and affects the lives of every family member, manifesting feelings of loss, sorrow, grief, anger, and gradual acceptance of the event. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is the true story of the murders of a mother, daughter, son-in-law, and three small grandsons. Even though the murders occurred over 100 years ago, the event still evokes an emotional response today, especially from the ancestors of Elizabeth Baker Justus (known in the community as Aunt Betty). Aunt Betty was a midwife and widow living in the small, rural community of Hurley in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Her youngest daughter, Lydia, Lydia's husband, George, and their three children lived in the home with Aunt Betty. They lived a quiet and simple life until one fall evening when murder entered the small log cabin and forever altered the lives of an entire family and community. The motive for this unspeakable tragedy is as old as time - money. Aunt Betty sold a large tract of timberland to the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company, a thriving business in the community. The person convicted of these murders was the Purchasing Agent for this company. Providing factual documentation, as well as the family history handed down through the generations, Georgia Charles presents the gripping and compelling story, detailing the tragic events that led to the murder of her ancestors. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is a thrilling page-turner readers will not discard until finished.

They had to have been out in that desert longer. Those bodies?? his voice trailed off thinking about what they looked like tied to that cactus. ?What?s the cause of death?? Richard was a veteran officer and he had seen many things in his career. Nothing prepared him though, for what he heard next. He sat down his bagel down and pulled out his notebook. ?So you?re telling me, that you believe these first two people have been skinned alive? I mean, that?s the only possible way. If the animals would have gotten him, they would have taken chunks, taking parts of his body.? The term they most often call was flaying. The reasons why people die after being flayed is that they would go into shock. Plus, they would of course lose blood and other body fluids, and get hypothermia. Our skin is our biggest organ, and without it, we can?t stay warm. The deserts in California?s temperatures get to ninty-five degrees in the middle of the day, and twenty-three degrees at night. Normally any person left out in the desert at night would get hypothermia, let alone with no skin. ?Do you know if it was a male or female?? When he looked at the body he, or nobody could see any genitalia. ?It was a male.? The medical examiner explained. ?I don?t know the medical examiner but by further inspection, I realized his penis has been cut off sometime during the murder, and it is nowhere to be found.?
