Book excerpt: Multiple Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge takes readers on a fifty-million-year trip to a future where humanity's fate will be decided in a dangerous game of high-tech survival. In this taut thriller, a Hugo finalist for Best Novel, nobody knows why there are only three hundred humans left alive on the Earth fifty million years from now. Opinion is fiercely divided on whether to settle in and plant the seed of mankind anew, or to continue using high-energy stasis fields, or "bobbles," in venturing into the future. When somebody is murdered, it's obvious someone has a secret he or she is willing to kill to preserve. The murder intensifies the rift between the two factions, threatening the survival of the human race. It's up to 21st century detective Wil Brierson, the only cop left in the world, to find the culprit, a diabolical fiend whose lust for power could cause the utter extinction of man. Filled with excitement and adventure, Vinge's tense SF puzzler will satisfy readers with its sense of wonder and engaging characters, one of whom is a murderer with a unique modus operandi. Book excerpt: Jeremiah N. Reynolds (1799-1858), an American newspaper editor, lecturer, explorer and author who became an influential advocate for scientific expeditions. Reynolds gathered first-hand observations of Mocha Dick, an albino sperm whale off Chile who bedeviled a generation of whalers for thirty years before succumbing to one. Mocha Dick survived many skirmishes (by some accounts at least 100) with whalers before he was eventually killed. In May 1839, The Knickerbocker, or New-York Monthly Magazine published Reynolds' "Mocha Dick: Or the White Whale of the Pacific," the inspiration for Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick. In Reynolds' account, Mocha Dick was killed in 1838, after he appeared to come to the aid of a distraught cow whose calf had just been slain by the whalers. His body was 70 feet long and yielded 100 barrels of oil, along with some ambergris. He also had several harpoons in his body.

Book excerpt: Young Duncan Ross thinks he's on his way to Sydney to be a clerk. How wrong could he be? A chance meeting with an attractive woman on a coach and Duncan finds himself on the high seas heading for the Coral Sea and adventure. In the company of swashbucklers and desperadoes of every description Duncan braves storm, shipwreck, sharks, crocodiles, massacre and decapitation in this epic romance of survival amongst the head-hunters of the Torres Strait. The tale plays out along golden beaches and on tropical islands washed by the crystalline waters of the Coral Sea. It is a region of extraordinary beauty and danger as Duncan discovers whilst wending his cautious way betwixt piratical thugs on the one hand and ferocious natives on the other. More than a simple adventure Coral Sea Story brings alive those frantic days when the Queensland frontier was wild; when fortune-seekers and squatters, and drunken captains and pearl-divers, and South Sea Island sailors and Torres Strait warriors battled for control of the Coral Sea and its riches. This is Australian history as you've never seen it; big, bold and a ripping yarn.
