Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blessing of Cheerfulness WE are set in this world to be happy. We should not falter in our great task of happiness, nor move ever among our fellows with shadows on our face when we ought to have sunlight. We have a mission to others - to add to their cheer. This we cannot do unless we have first learned the lesson of cheerfulness ourselves. We cannot teach what we do not know. We cannot give what we do not have. In this little book a lesson is set for you, my reader. It may seem a hard lesson to learn; nevertheless, it is one you want to learn, and one you can learn, if you will surrender your life wholly to the great Teacher. Spiritual light begins with the first approaches of the soul to Jesus Christ. All true converts are alike in two respects; they were once in the darkness of depravity and unbelief; their day-dawn began with the penitent turning of the heart to the Saviour. The Holy Spirit drew them and they moved Christ ward. Conversions have been very numerous lately, but no two persons have had exactly the same experience. With one person the first step was into an inquiry room. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mount of Blessing, or Lectures on the Beatitudes Dear friend, - Permit me to detain you a mo ment. The Lectures you are about to read are upon one of the most beautiful and interesting portions of Divine truth. The Beatitudes have ever been admired. They show us so much of the Savior's heart; they so graphically pencil the characters he loves; they unseal such a full and sweet fountain of comfort, that a pious mind can not fail to realize both pleasure and profit in meditating upon them. So peculiarly are they constructed, if I may thus speak, that they adapt themselves, in some degree, to every kind of temperament, to every stage of Christian experience, and every circumstance of human life. They delineate character, they prompt us to an effort of imitation, and pronounce a bless ing upon every humble and sincere endeavor. Standing, as we seem to, around the Mount, under the uplifted hands of Jesus, while blessings, like the river of life, pour from his Opening lips, our weakness should change to strength, our despair to joyful hope, and our tottering footsteps to a firm and rapid movement along the highway of holiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Circle of Blessing: And Other Parables From Nature "There are two books," says Sir Thomas Browne, in his Religio Medici, "from whence I collect my divinity: besides that written one of God, another of his servant, Nature - that universal and public manuscript that lies expanded unto the eyes of all: those that never saw Him in the one have discovered Him in the other." And afterwards, as if giving a particular direction to the above general statement, he adds: "Those strange and mystical transmigrations that I have observed in silkworms turned my philosophy into divinity. They fall like rain on the mown field, bringing again to life the roots of feeling and of conduct that the hot sun of care has parched. Come, says Jesus, with your laboring and heavy laden souls, and I will give you rest; for I will show you that religion is not to do this act or that, in this way or in another 3 but to live justly and mercifully, and with humble devoutness and this every man can do in his own soul. This only is my yoke, to be meek and lowly of heart; which is an easy yoke and a light burden because truly it is in accordance with the nature of the soul. Now this you see sets peace in the state of the mind and not in any outward doings or fortunes. Now peace is the blessing the world calls for. Do not you wish peace? Has not Heaven always been thought of as a rest? Herbert says that weariness shall toss us to the breast of our Father. Who of you is not tired often? Who of you wages not a strife which sometimes is exhausting? To beat peace, to have a quiet mind, - this always has been a great need, and sought anxiously. I will ask you to take a near view of this rest to which Jesus calls the laboring and heavy laden, for if - rest (as the world thinks) be something to be courted by greatness and power, lying softly on the pillow of the taskmaster but scout ing the cabin of the slave, what is Jesus' invitation worth, who had not where to lay his head P. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cheerful Words: From the Writings of George Macdonald It is pleasant, always, to hold up for admiration the authors who have borne witness to the eternal beauty and cheerful capabilities of the universe around us, whatever may be our own petty sufferings or discomforts; who con tinually teach us that Optimism is better than Pessimism, and much more moral as a conduct of life, and are lovingly reminding us, whenever they write books or poems, of the holiness of helpfulness. All macdonald's pages are a pro test against selfishness, and that mean and narrow spirit which would elevate our petty selves above our contempo raries, and arrogate to an individual catalogue all the} virtues that are attainable by mortal acquirement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Joy of Service These fragments of lessons may have their mission of helpfulness to some who are earnestly striving to grow into a braver, truer, richer-hearted life, and to become inspirers of others in their efforts and struggles. The author finds in these lines of Lowell's such an interpretation of his own feeling that he takes the liberty of quoting them on this page: - It may be glorious to write Thoughts that shall glad the two or three High souls, like those far stars that come in sight Once in a century; But better far it is to speak One simple word, which now and then Shall waken their free nature in the weak And friendless sons of men; To write some earnest verse or line, Which, seeking not the praise of art, Shall make a clearer faith and manhood shine In the untutored heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blessed Be Drudgery: And Other Papers To all of us there come times when we are out of heart with ourselves and with all that goes to make up our lives. Constant worry, endless toil, perpetual disappointments, seem then to be our lot; we feel ourselves unable to cope with the evil without and within, and our belief in the "Love which walketh in Mystery" becomes weak and faint. We are, perchance, looking back to times when we dreamt how we too might "Join the choir invisible Of those immortal dead, who live again In minds made better by their presence, live In pulses stirred to generosity, In deeds of daring rectitude, in scorn For miserable aims that end with self; In thoughts sublime that pierce the night like stars, And with their mild persistence, urge man's search To vaster issues." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Happiness: Or, the Beatitudes as Teaching Our Duty to God, Self and Our Neighbour In sending forth these addresses on the Beatitudes I desire to add a few words of ex planation and apology. In 1883 the line of thought here worked out was indicated in some Meditations published in Volume II. Of my Helps to Meditation. These thoughts were afterwards used in Retreats given to the Associates of the Sisterhood of S. Mary at Peekskill and at Kenosha, and in a Retreat at Toronto. Having been re quested by many to publish them I gave them as a series of addresses in my own Parish Church last Fall, and arranged to have a stenographer report them. I publish them now without any attempt to rewrite them, hav ing merely corrected the stenographer's notes. They thus exhibit faults of style which belong to extempore preaching, but in spite of this I have felt that they would be more acceptable in thisform to those who had heard them delivered, than they would be if I rewrote them. My apol ogy for publishing them must be the requests of many friends, the fact that I have been unable to find any little book on the Beatitudes which gives them more than the most superficial treat ment, and that I believe that their more careful study would be helpful to all.
