Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "magical power of the spoken word" is a topic that often comes up in a discussion of biblical blessings and curses. What is the source of social and linguistic power behind these blessings and curses? Many theologians would agree that God can and does bless, but does God also curse? If so, what does that mean to the biblical theology of the Old Testament and the Christian church? Anderson's The Blessing and the Curse applies speech act theory as one way to understand the performative function of blessings and curses. The concept of speech acts provides a method of recognizing the potent social power of language to accomplish certain ends, without drawing a hard line of distinction between word-magic and religion. Even though the chief concepts and practices of blessings and curses are deeply rooted in the broad cultural environment of the ancient Near East, tracing specific trajectories of Old Testament blessings and curses as theological themes conveys broad, inescapable implications for the biblical narrative and the Christian church.

Book excerpt: The writings of Rav Baruch Shalom HaLevi Ashlag (RABASH), the firstborn son and successor of Rav Yehuda Leib HaLevi Ashlag (Baal HaSulam), author of the Sulam (Ladder) commentary on The Book of Zohar, provide us with insights that connect the wisdom of Kabbalah to our human experience. These books disclose the profound knowledge of human nature that the RABASH possessed, and take us on a journey to our own souls. As we absorb the texts, we find that Kabbalah is not some cryptic occultism, but a time-tested method to understand ourselves and improve our lives and the world around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English term "prayer" is usually understood as communication with God or the gods. Scholars of Jewish ritual until now have accepted this characterization and applied it to Jewish tefillah. Does rabbinic prayer indeed necessarily entail second-person address to God, as many scholars of rabbinic prayer to this point have presumed? In this work, Yehuda Septimus investigates a boundary phenomenon of talmudic prayer - ritual speech with addressees other than God. The book represents a fresh look at the possible range of performances undertaken by talmudic ritual prayer. Moreover, it places that range of performances into the historical context of the rapid emergence of prayer as the centerpiece of Jewish worship in the first half of the first millennium CE.

This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productive activity characterized the lives of the citizens of the Gulf prior to the discovery of oil. Innovation is a result of productive activity. During the periods of difficult and trying circumstances, Gulf countries tended to innovate to ensure the sustainability of their citizens and their culture. Consequently, business in the Gulf countries was inextricably linked to the dominant religion, and the social mores. Arab entrepreneurs are perceived not to be able to imagine life without the responsibilities of managing the family business and issues because their working lives have revolved entirely around these aspects, leaving little time to develop outside interests. Placing these issues into the Kuwaiti context, this book considers the strategic points surrounding the governance of oil resources and its implication for the growth and development of Kuwait through innovation. Within the large and growing body of empirical work in this area, a negative relationship between resource abundance and poor economic performance has often been empirically established. For the most part, this evidence appears to support the “resource curse” hypothesis. The question that arises is whether there is any prospect of the “resource curse” being converted into a “blessing”. This book places innovation into context within the confines of the natural resource that sustains the Kuwaiti economy. There are many unique issues that confront Kuwait, and make it a fundamentally different case from other countries endowed with natural resources. The culture of governance in Gulf countries, and the norms and values within each individual Gulf country, become key determinants of innovation that impacts on the various economic phenomena. By reviewing the extensive literature in both the field of the resource curse and innovation, and by collecting primary data, this book offers an overview of the challenges of promoting and supporting innovation in Kuwait, and the effectiveness of dissemination of innovative practices throughout the various economic sectors. Since the exploitation of natural assets is a matter of grave concern throughout the world, exploration and exploitation are costly and risky exercises in terms of growth and profitability, and the risks are manifest in terms of social, political and economic consequences. Governments of oil-rich Gulf countries need to cultivate a culture that fosters creative ideas associated with, among others, safety and security of their natural and human resources, morality, employment and health within the context of an increasingly global environment. A lack of a shared vision, purpose and strategy reduces the vital role that innovation can play. A planned investment in innovation is therefore critical and Kuwait needs to reorient itself economically, politically, socially, ethically and morally in this regard. Failure to achieve this would result in Kuwait failing to fulfill its mandate – a blessing and common good for all – thereby reducing the return to private effort and initiatives.

This book challenges the common assumption that the Abrahamic blessing and the Spirit are equated in Gal 3:14 and points out how an accurate understanding of the relationship between these two motifs contributes significantly to appreciating Paul's overall argument in Galatians and his theology of justification. Even though Paul does not cite Old Testament passages on the promise of the Spirit in Gal 3:1-14, his arguments are nonetheless deeply influenced by the whole prophetic tradition about the Spirit. Most current discussions on the present and future aspects of justification have yet to consider the Spirit's role in the latter. Given the renewed interest in Pauline justification, this book contributes to this important aspect of the Spirit's role in future justification, which needs to be developed further in Pauline and New Testament theology.
