Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed Events explores how women who give birth at home use religion to make sense of their births and in turn draw on their birthing experiences to bring meaning to their lives and families. Pamela Klassen introduces a surprisingly diverse group of women, in their own words, while also setting their birth stories within wider social, political, and economic contexts. In doing so, she emerges with a study that disrupts conventional views of both childbirth and religion by blurring assumed divisions between conservative and feminist women and by taking childbirth seriously as a religious act. Most American women who have a choice give birth in a hospital and request pain medication. Yet enough women choose and advocate unmedicated home birth--and do so for carefully articulated reasons, social resistance among them--to constitute a movement. Klassen investigates why women whose religious affiliations range from Old Order Amish to Reform Judaism to goddess-centered spirituality defy majority opinion, the medical establishment, and sometimes the law to have their babies at home. In considering their interpretations--including their critiques of the dominant medical model of childbirth and their views on labor pain--she examines the kinds of agency afforded to or denied women as they derive religious meanings from childbirth. Throughout, she identifies tensions and affinities between feminist and traditionalist appraisals of the symbolic meaning of birth and the power of women. What does home birth--a woman-centered movement working to return birth to women's control--mean in practice for women's gender and religious identities? Is this supreme valuing of procreation and motherhood constraining, or does it open up new realms of cultural and social power for women? By asking these questions while remaining cognizant of religion's significance, Blessed Events challenges both feminist and traditionalist accounts of childbearing while broadening our understanding of how religion is ''lived'' in contemporary America.

Book excerpt: When all seems lost, where can you find hope? Katherine and Jay Wolf married right after college and sought adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams--she as a model and he as a lawyer--they planted their lives in the city and their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family. On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through forty days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that small spark of hope was fanned into flame. Hope Heals documents Katherine and Jay's journey as they struggled to regain Katherine's quality of life and as she relearned to talk, eat, and walk. As Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. As you uncover Katherine and Jay's remarkable story, you'll be encouraged to: Find lasting hope in the midst of struggle Embrace the unexpected Welcome God's miracles into your everyday life In the midst of continuing hardships, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: a hope that heals the most broken place--our souls. Let Hope Heals be your guide along the way. Praise for Hope Heals: "As I read this book, tears streamed from my eyes even as joy flooded my heart. Jay and Katherine are a raw yet refreshing testimony to the unshakable trustworthiness of God amidst the unimaginable trials of life. This book reminds all of us where hope can be found in a world where none of us know what the next day holds." --David Platt, author of the New York Times bestseller Radical and president of the International Mission Board "Hope Heals is a beautiful, true story that illustrates the love and protection God has for us even in the darkest times of our lives. Katherine and Jay's dedication to each other and the Lord through their most devastating season is inspiring. This book will help your heart believe that He sees, He knows, He cares, and He is still working miracles today!" --Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries

Book excerpt: Millions of women have felt the power of birth, and countless women long for it. But for too many, birth can seem like a purely clinical experience — something to get through as quickly as possible in order to get on with the joys of being a mother. In Made for This, author Mary Haseltine draws on Pope St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body to show that birth is an essential part of who God created women to be, body and soul. With real-life stories from many moms and practical tips — including preparing for birth, making informed choices, helping fathers embrace their role in the birth room, and encountering the work of labor — this book is an indispensable guide for navigating the physical and spiritual dimensions of pregnancy and birth. Expectant mothers will find the tools they need to approach birth as a gift, and to invite God into the experience. About the Author Mary Haseltine is a theology graduate and a certified birth doula and childbirth educator. With a passion for building a culture of life through the teachings of the Theology of the Body, she works to bring an awareness and practice of the teachings of the Church into the realm of childbirth, mothering, and pregnancy loss. She lives in Western New York with her husband and five sons. You can find more of her writing at www.betterthaneden.com.

Book excerpt: It's true; I've had 4 babies naturally without pain and not one tear-four pregnancies without morning sickness and complications. I've had four wonderful postpartum experiences. The great news is that this same experience is available to every woman through Jesus. Before I became pregnant with my first, I had a preconceived notion that labor pretty much sucks. The world says it's going to be awful and extremely painful. Writhing in pain and begging for drugs is what friends, family, movies, and social media tell us. I heard it all and believed that was the way it's supposed to be.This book's purpose is to take you through my journey of breaking free from the world system of what birthing looks like and exchange it for the Kingdom, His righteousness, and what God intended for all women to experience. This book has scriptures that will open your eyes to blessings you may have never realized are yours to receive. Many people have said to me that I'm either lying or have a special superhuman gift. The truth is, I do have a special superhuman gift, and His name is Jesus! If you have Jesus, I am no different than you. We have the same supernatural abilities and anointing, for we have the same anointed one in us. If you do not know Jesus yet, I pray that my testimony will open your heart to seek Him and find the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Birth of a Blessing: A Fertile Spirit", the author compares the Spiritual Birth process with the natural birth process. He takes us on a journey step by step that demonstrates God's work in us and through us as well as how to strengthen our faith in Him. No believer, man or woman is excluded from spiritual pregnancy. For every believer has the right to spiritual blessings. Believers must nurture the special "seed" that is planted within them until it is mature enough to be delivered. God has prepared a special blessing for those who love and trust Him. As with natural pregnancy, the first trimester is the most critical. During the earlier stage, the enemy lurks in every corner waiting to snatch the seed of the word of God out of the believer like the seed that fell on stony ground. That seed was initially received with joy just like the natural news of pregnancy. However, if the seed is not planted deeply, the seed cannot take root, as it should. Moreover, when trouble comes, the initial enthusiasm is lost and the pregnancy is aborted. This book examines the development of the believers' faith and spiritual strength. The full- term birthing of the blessing is the most anticipated part. By the time it comes to fruition, believers are certain of their spiritual convictions and faith in God and have gained confidence. This, however, does not guarantee them freedom from trials and temptation. Satan is always around to put doubt in the hearts of believers, no matter how strong or weak their faith is. This book is filled with the Word of God and the works of God. It provides clear and concise help in bringing understanding to the preparation that precedes the blessings that God has promised for our lives. Not only is this book a valuable resource for every believer truly seeking to know the will of God and walk in it, but it is also a powerful teaching tool that will benefit ministry groups of any size. I pray that this book will aid in bringing about a supernatural revelation that will change your life forever. What God has for you, is for you.
