Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blessed Virgin Mary is the humane mother of our Savior. She is our great intercessor. She is the ideal woman who is an epitome of good moral values with indescribable endowment and all-encompassing qualities of ideal mother. The book captures the unequaled intrinsic and extrinsic spectacular qualities of the immaculate mother which radiate beyond reproach as made manifest in her sinless and ever virgin nature, thus her body suffered no decay.Mother Mary, as revealed in the book, is an embodiment of unparalleled example of ideal mother and woman as enumerated in her litany. What is more is her pondering character which culminated in her subtle and soothing words made evident in the wedding in Cana. We imagine her behold the torture and shameful treatment given to her Son on the way to Calvary, and eventually to the grave for no atom of sin. For any woman and mother, this is the highest point of grieve, the hardest nut to crack and the swallowing of a bone with sharp ends at all joints. In all these, she remained resolute to the will of God. Mary immaculate in this text is a woman of honour. Here is a divine example of a woman in leadership, a salvage of woman integrity in whom God encoded all virtues. Mary the Mother of God is therefore, worthy of emulation by any positive thinking and meaningful mother, wife and girl child who is aspiring to possess the earth and commune with the saints. In my research on woman in authority/governance in Igbo land, the people attested that good mothers inoculate good morals, norms and values in the family and society at large. They are only the vehicle, through which life is brought into. This is because; only ideal mothers embark on tough journeys with their families, societies and the Church even to crucifixion as Mary did. Little wonder "the tender care of a woman" as revealed in the text "ceases not to a child she bears". In the Bible, we are informed that Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit had said of Mary, "Of all women, you are the most blessed'' (Lk1:42). And the Blessed Virgin Mary inspired by the same Holy Spirit had responded and sang to God in thanksgiving "Yes, from now onwards all generations will call me blessed"(Lk1:48) Hence, our mission in this reflection is to present anew our most blessed woman, who, of all women, in all generations, has reached the pinnacle of womanhood and motherhood. She remains the model that every woman and mother should look up to and emulate her exemplary life; demonstrated in the family, in the Church and in the society. Actually, we are experiencing in our time, to some regrettable extent, the degrading and debasing of the dignity and identity of womanhood. And with the current confusion of values, the beauty of womanhood is today evaluated by the standards of mere externality, at times giving way to the promotion of nudity through the so called beauty contests and fashion parades of our time. There is more lasting beauty. It involves moral beauty, spiritual beauty, intellectual beauty and lastly, physical beauty. Interestingly, the personality of the Blessed Virgin Mary encompasses all these. And the powers and glories of womanhood lie in discovering and applying these beautiful moral, spiritual, intellectual and physical qualities of the blessed woman, virgin and mother in the affairs of today's woman, in the family, Church and state.Viewed from these all inclusive angles, the movie stars, worldly celebrities, political figures fall short of standard as ideal model for every woman; the Blessed Virgin Mary wins the contest. Thus promoting her qualities, virtues and lifestyle is promoting a perfect culture of morality, piety, wisdom and all round progressiveness and culture of life. This will in turn gradually dethrone the rampant culture of vices, a culture of death experienced in the life of most of today's women Enjoy reading a faith-strengthening, instructive and inspiring book on our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary!

Book excerpt: Mary--relic of the religious past or beacon of the future? Mary is more alive today than she was in the early Christian church, surfacing in art and worship in almost every culture on earth. Her appeal bridges the gap between the devotional and the secular, the uneducated and the sophisticated. But who is Mary and what exactly does she symbolize? How did a humble Jewish girl become the most honored woman in human history? Why is there so little about Mary in the Bible and so much about her in the art and history of Christianity, East and West? And why, in an age dominated by science and technology, does devotion to Mary persist? In Search of Mary is Sally Cunneen's provocative response to these questions. As Cunneen eloquently points out, in order to see Mary whole, it is important to look at all the different visions and versions of her, revisiting history through the eyes of a present day searcher. Including the latest findings by historians, anthropologists, and psychologists, as well as art historians and religious scholars, In Search of Mary reveals what we know about the life of Mary, follows the history and development of her image over the last two thousand years, and explores the different ways that Mary has transformed the lives of people today. As we struggle for greater unity in a divided world, In Search of Mary shows us a woman who can touch all people, regardless of their backgrounds. She is a profound reminder of the presence of the holy in ordinary life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once, the Virgin Mary was a pivotal element of Christianity, a holy figure at the heart of most Christians' spiritual lives. She was invoked at all major life passages--baptisms, weddings, childbirths, and funerals--and images of the Virgin Mary could be found virtually anywhere, from pub signs to sacred texts. Medieval women especially looked to Mary to answer their prayers, be their role model, and serve as their advocate in heaven. They prayed to her several times a day and sometimes devoted their entire lives to her service. This book investigates perceptions of the Virgin Mary through several centuries of literature. Focusing especially on the depictions of the Virgin Mary in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, the author rediscovers a time when the Divine Female was very much in evidence, and good Christian women were taught to pray to a Holy Mother. Topics include the cyclical popularity of Virgin Mary; devotional objects such as Books of Hours, rosaries, and Marian gardens; the mystical qualities attributed to the Virgin Mary through centuries of reported divine visions; the historical relationships between the Virgin Mary and other religious figures, including the Devil; and Mary Magdalene as an alternative to the Virgin Mary as a feminine model.

People of all faiths who believe in God can pray the prayers in this book. While praying in a Eucharistic perpetual adoration chapel in a Catholic church, Patricia witnessed a miracle there. She found the miracle was still there the following day when she returned and took pictures of this miracle. She spent time in prayer there and writing in her journal. Through inner locutions (messages) from God (while she was writing in the Eucharistic perpetual adoration chapel), God told her a new parable of a mustard seed. God asked her to write a prayer book of nine days of prayers for an end to abortions. God explained to her what the title of the book would be, how the cover of the book would appear, and how a professional portrait painter was to depict the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus to be standing in a field of mustard flowers. Patricia received many graces and witnessed many different miracles on her journey to bring this book to fruition. Patricia shared her manuscript with six Catholic priests from different Catholic churches, and a few of their comments were: Follow Jesus; Jesus is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; get this manuscript published; I like the new parable of the mustard seed; and getting this manuscript published, Patricia would be doing a great deed for Almighty God.

Drawing upon his own experience as well as upon the experience of others, he endeavors to bring home to the reader, “in a simple and straightforward manner,” as he himself tells us, the authentic message of the Rosary; namely, that it is a veritable school of Christian life. He sees it as including essentially the meditation of the mysteries of the life, death and glory of Jesus and Mary, with a view not only to honoring but especially imitating their virtues as held up to our consideration in each mystery. Do you ever feel caught in an endless cycle of working harder and longer to get more while enjoying life less? The Stewart family did—and they decided to make a radical change. Popular Catholic blogger and podcaster Haley Stewart explains how a year-long internship on a sustainable farm changed her family’s life for the better, allowing them to live gospel values more intentionally. When Haley Stewart married her bee-keeping sweetheart, Daniel, they dreamed of a life centered on home and family. But as the children arrived and Daniel was forced to work longer hours at a job he liked less and less, they dared to break free from the unending cycle of getting more yet feeling unfufilled. They sold their Florida home and retreated to Texas to live on a farm with a compost toilet and 650 square feet of space for a family of five. Surprisingly, they found that they had never been happier. In The Grace of Enough, Stewart shares essential elements of intentional Christian living that her family discovered during that extraordinary year on the farm and that they continue to practice today. You, too, will be inspired to: live simply offer hospitality revive food culture and the family table reconnect with the land nurture community prioritize beauty develop a sense of wonder be intentional about technology seek authentic intimacy center life around home, family, and relationships Drawing from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Stewart identifies elements of Catholic social teaching that will enhance your life and create a ripple effect of grace to help you overcome the effects of today’s “throwaway” culture and experience a deeper satisfaction and stronger faith.

Book excerpt: A sweeping, ambitious study of the Virgin Mary’s emergence and role throughout Western historyHow did the Virgin Mary, about whom very little is said in the Gospels, become one of the most powerful and complex religious figures in the world? To arrive at the answers to this far-reaching question, one of our foremost medieval historians, Miri Rubin, investigates the ideas, practices, and images that have developed around the figure of Mary from the earliest decades of Christianity to around the year 1600. Drawing on an extraordinarily wide range of sources—including music, poetry, theology, art, scripture, and miracle tales—Rubin reveals how Mary became so embedded in our culture that it is impossible to conceive of Western history without her.In her rise to global prominence, Mary was continually remade and reimagined by wave after wave of devotees. Rubin shows how early Christians endowed Mary with a fine ancestry; why in early medieval Europe her roles as mother, bride, and companion came to the fore; and how the focus later shifted to her humanity and unparalleled purity. She also explores how indigenous people in Central America, Africa, and Asia remade Mary and so fit her into their own cultures.Beautifully written and finely illustrated, this book is a triumph of sympathy and intelligence. It demonstrates Mary’s endless capacity to inspire and her profound presence in Christian cultures and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century America was rife with Protestant-fueled anti-Catholicism. Elizabeth Hayes Alvarez reveals how Protestants nevertheless became surprisingly and deeply fascinated with the Virgin Mary, even as her role as a devotional figure who united Catholics grew. Documenting the vivid Marian imagery that suffused popular visual and literary culture, Alvarez argues that Mary became a potent, shared exemplar of Christian womanhood around which Christians of all stripes rallied during an era filled with anxiety about the emerging market economy and shifting gender roles. From a range of diverse sources, including the writings of Anna Jameson, Anna Dorsey, and Alexander Stewart Walsh and magazines such as The Ladies' Repository and Harper's, Alvarez demonstrates that Mary was represented as pure and powerful, compassionate and transcendent, maternal and yet remote. Blending romantic views of motherhood and female purity, the virgin mother's image enamored Protestants as a paragon of the era's cult of true womanhood, and even many Catholics could imagine the Queen of Heaven as the Queen of the Home. Sometimes, Marian imagery unexpectedly seemed to challenge domestic expectations of womanhood. On a broader level, The Valiant Woman contributes to understanding lived religion in America and the ways it borrows across supposedly sharp theological divides.
