Book excerpt: From the Eyes of a Little Girl this incident occurred when the writer was only 11 years old. The Bleeding Palm Tree, No Means No! This story is about a beautiful woman, Tha Kaday, who struggled with the custom of the country, in concert with weaning a child and engaging in sexual activities during that period from the birth of the child to at least a year or two of nursing the child, a custom her husband refused to accept. The conflict between the couple escalade to physical, mental and sexual abuse and rape, in such a way the entire village intervened to stop the abuse. As a child I witnessed women suffer physical, mental and sexual abuse from the men they loved and had children for but never to the degree of murder. I watched women suffer silently, because of the children, they will say. Follow Tha Kaday as she forgave her husband more than Seventy times Seven (70 X 7), tells her story from the grave. I cannot attempt to tell my story of abuse and shame without first helping Tha Kaday, tell hers. It was her story as a child that inspired me not to surrender my heart, soul and body to any man, relationship, family or friend. Through her, I also learned to run away, therefore, I am still alive. To all that read this book, I want you to accept the fact that domestic violence is real and exist in every country, society, culture and race. This story will help those who are presently in or are thinking to go back to an abusive relationship to think twice not to end up like our heroin, who held her honor to protect her child but believed her husband will give in and help her raise a healthy child, fell for his lies and ended up dead. The writers desire is for the reader to come away with the hope that people will learn to love each other enough not to course harm to another human being especially if they proclaim to become husband and wife or partners for life.

Book excerpt: The palm tree is a typical plant of tropical climates. They are abundant in the islands of the Caribbean Sea. There are many variations of this kind of tree. The Royal Palm tree is one of them. It is the tallest, slenderest and most beautiful of the palm trees. It is also the national plant of the island of Cuba. Its leaves are huge and of a deep olive green color. The native Indians of the island used them to make the roofs of their shacks before the Spaniards arrived. The typical Cuban peasant followed the same tradition. Well intertwined, they formed a formidable barrier against the strongest showers, and only hurricanes could persuade them to leave their guarding positions. Once, in 1959, Fidel Castro was asked if his revolution was tinted with the classical red color of communism. He answered that his revolution was not red, but that his revolution had the green color of their uniforms and the Royal Palm trees. In 1962, he finally declared that he had always been a Marxist-Leninist, and that he would be one until his death. Ever since that time, the color of the palm trees in Cuba has been tinted red with the blood of so many Cubans spilled in the name of that sadistic doctrine.

Book excerpt: When WILHELM RUHLAND developed his plan for an Encyclopedia of Plant Physiol ogy more than three decades ago, biology could still be conveniently subdivided into classical areas. Even within plant physiology, subdivisions were not too difficult to make, and general principles could be covered sufficiently in the two introductory volumes of the Encyclopedia on the physical and chemical basis of cell biology. But the situation changed rapidly even during the 12-year publication period of the Encyclopedia (1955-1967). The new molecular direction of genetics and structural research on biopolymers had an integrating effect on all other biological fields, including plant physiology, and it became increasingly difficult to keep previously distinct areas separated. RUHLAND'S overall plan included 18 volumes and about 22,000 pages. It covered the entire field of plant physiology, in most cases from the very beginning. But, as each volume appeared, it was clear that its content would soon be outdated.

Book excerpt: The rapid development of oil palm cultivation feeds many social issues such as biodiversity, deforestation, food habits or ethical investments. How can this palm be viewed as a ‘miracle plant’ by both the agro-food industry in the North and farmers in the tropical zone, but a serious ecological threat by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for the environment or rights of local indigenous peoples? In the present book the authors – a biologist and an agricultural economist- describe a global and complex tropical sector, for which the interests of the many different stakeholders are often antagonistic. Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. Indeed, palm oil is produced and consumed in the South; its trade is driven by emerging countries, although the major part of its transformations is made in the North that still hosts the largest multinational agro industries. It is also in the North that the sector is challenged on ethical and environmental issues. Public controversy over palm oil is often opinionated and it is fed by definitive and sometimes exaggerated statements. Researchers are conveying a more nuanced speech, which is supported by scientific data and a shared field experience. Their work helps in building a more balanced view, moving attention to the South, the region of exclusive production and major consumption of palm oil.

Book excerpt: This fascinating book, translated from the French, explores the Yafar society, a forest people living by shifting cultivation, hunting and gathering. Based on fifteen years of research, it offers a detailed examination of all aspects of a society whose material and nutritional relations with their rainforest environment are mediated by a sociocultural system based on a carefully negotiated relationship with natural forces, and harmony between the sexes. The author shows how these basic ideas can be found in the ritualized and institutional aspects of the Yafar's social life, as well as their mythology. Rich in detail and insight, this book fully documents the Yafar's complex ritual involving a symbolic exchange with the spirit world, a secret cult, and curing rites presided over by hereditary religious officials. The author's analysis of Yafar ideologies reveals that sexual reproduction is the key to their society and the model for continuity and regeneration prescribed by nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the collected papers of Albert Henrichs on numerous subjects in ancient Greek myth and religion. What was ancient Greek religion really like? What is the reality of belief and action that lies behind the unwieldy sources, which stem from vast areas and epochs of the ancient world? What is the meaning, intended and otherwise, of religious action and speech in ancient Greece? Who were the Greek gods, how were they worshipped, and how were they viewed by those who worshipped them? One of the leading students of ancient Greek religion over the past five decades, Albert Henrichs, the Eliot Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University, combines wide and deep learning, a pragmatic, incisive approach to the sources, and an apt use of comparative perspectives. Henrichs breaks new ground in discussing sacrifice, libation, cultic identity, religious action and speech, epiphany, and the personalities of the gods. Special attention is devoted to ancient Greek sources on the ancient Persian prophet Mani, founder of Manichaeism. As a group, Albert Henrichs’ papers on Greek religion offer a basic education on Greek myth and religion and constitute a blueprint for serious study of the subject.

Book excerpt: Two women separated by five hundred years, each with a secret - the infamous ‘Blood Countess’(1560-1614), notorious for bathing in the blood of six-hundred-and-fifty women in Renaissance Hungary and Transylvania; and the woman driven to re-write her story in the present - an academic who lives in and out of time because of a near death experience and who escapes ruin at the hands of rival scholars desperate to see her and her world destroyed at any cost. But Bathory’s story will be told! Not as a murderer or a dark witch, as history would have us believe today, but as a woman who became a subversive printer and smuggler of banned books, rocked the religious foundations of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with only a band of faithful refugee women to help her, and who’s revolutionary ideas would challenge even the Emperor himself! Bathory’s modern day chronicler becomes the cipher of this secret history, uncovering the real life of the Blood Countess. What she doesn’t know is that the Blood Countess is rewriting her across time… Based on 100s of hours of original historical research, this novel is a transformational account of not only of the infamous story of the so-called Blood Countess, but a searing exploration of what history is and what history does to women.
