Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Tulip: Translated From the French by A. J. O'connor Alas for generalizations when the sign-post is mis taken for the road! Comte's had been before the world but twenty-four years, when Martineau, writ ing amid the British excitement over the Papal Aggression, ' was able to point out with an ironic chuckle that the most practical nation of Europe the nation in which the high-priest of inductive science was Chancellor nearly two centuries and a half ago signs requisitions about the grace of baptism, holds county meetings on the doctrine of Apostolicity, de mands leading articles on the remission of sins, and listens in crowded town halls to the canon law and the Tridentine decrees. M. Comte's law stands aghast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: One of Dumas' last novels of historical fiction, The Black Tulip tells the story of the 1672 lynching of Johan de Witt, the Dutch Grand Pensionary, and his brother, Cornelius, by a mob of Dutch men. The event has been considered one of the most painful episodes in Dutch history and is described by Dumas with great intensity in the novel. The plot surrounds two fictional characters and their lives in the 18 months following the lynching. The reader gathers that the main characters are directly related to the episode in the middle of the novel, adding to the understanding of how dramatic the event was for the Dutch people. The novel's minor plot revolves around the countrywide gardening competition that would award any man or woman who could grow a black tulip a substantial monetary prize. Once a middle-class man seems to be close to achieving this feat, he is arrested and thrown in prison. Dumas ends the novel with the prisoner meeting and falling in love with the prison guard's daughter, the recounting of the horrible 1672 lynching, and the famous quote by Cornelius de Witt: "One has sometimes suffered enough to have the right never afterwards to say 'I am too happy.'"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succession-nothing in plant, community, or ecosystem ecology has been so elaborated by terminology, so much reviewed, and yet so much the center of controversy. In a general sense, every ecologist uses the concept in teaching and research, but no two ecologists seem to have a unified concept of the details of succession. The word was used by Thoreau to describe, from a naturalist's point of view, the general changes observed during the transition of an old field to a forest. As data accumulated, a lengthy taxonomy of succession developed around early twentieth century ecologists such as Cooper, Clements, and Gleason. Now, nearer the end of the century, and after much discussion concerning the nature of vegetation communities, where do ecologists stand with respect to knowledge of ecological succession? The intent of this book is not to rehash classic philosophies of succession that have emerged through the past several decades of study, but to provide a forum for ecologists to present their current research and present-day interpretation of data. To this end, we brought together a group of scientists currently studying terrestrial plant succession, who represent research experience in a broad spectrum of different ecosystem types. The results of that meeting led to this book, which presents to the reader a unique summary of contemporary research on forest succession.

Book excerpt: Wetlands are a vital part of the landscape and ecology of the United States, providing food and shelter for species ranging from the beautiful wood duck to the tiny fairy shrimp. These areas provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife, protect communities from flooding, and recharge groundwater supplies—yet they continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. A detailed analysis of wetlands management, Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair is a comprehensive guide to the past, present, and future of wetland recovery in the United States. The book includes a historical overview of wetland destruction and repair over the past two hundred years and also serves as a unique resource for anyone, from novice to engineer, interested in the process of wetland restoration. Author Thomas R. Biebighauser draws from his own vast experience in building and repairing more than 950 wetlands across North America. Included are numerous photographs and case studies that highlight successes of past projects. Detailed, step-by-step instructions guide the reader through the planning and implementation of each restoration action. Biebighauser also provides a number of effective strategies for initiating and improving funding for wetlands programs. Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair is essential reading for all who care about and for these important ecosystems.
