Download or read book The Black Poplar written by Fiona Cooper and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural and ecological biography of the black poplar in Britain. Fiona cooper explores the tree's historic place in the landscape, and how it has played a role in folklore and in the work of poets such as William Cowper. She explains how the tree has been used through the centuries as timber and in medicine, and then addresses the question of its conservation. She investigates the reasons for the black poplar's decline, and focuses in particular on the important populations in the Vale of Aylesbury and in Manchester, which is in danger of completely losing trees which for a century have been a distinctive feature of the urban landscape. The key to the species' survival in Britain may in fact lie in our own understanding of its genetic make-up.

Book Synopsis Old Names - New Growth by : Peter Bierbaumer
Download or read book Old Names - New Growth written by Peter Bierbaumer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the 2nd ASPNS conference the emphasis regarding the topics of the talks was placed on lexicographic and linguistic matters. In this volume the contributors assess the various problems of working with plant names like foxes glofa and geormanleaf, pulege and psyllium, hlenortear or fornetes folm. A special study analyses the semantic aspects of Old English plant names. More generally plant related discussions deal with the mandrake legend in Anglo-Saxon England and continental Europe, the need for a new publication of the Old English Herbarium and of the Medicina de Quadrupedibus, or the tree names in Anglo-Saxon charters. The conference also served as a platform to introduce the Graz-Munich online project Dictionary of Old English Plant Names.

Download or read book Tortricidae, part 2 written by Keith P. Bland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, volume 5, Keith P. Bland offers a comprehensive account of the British members of the moth family TORTRICIDAE sensu lato. For ease of handling, it is divided into two Volumes: Part 1, the Tortricinae & Chlidanotinae, and Part 2, the Olethreutinae. Each volume is self-contained and indexed separately. For each species there is included a full taxonomy, a description of the adult moth, an account of the larval stages and its life history. The up-to-date British distribution for each species is given as maps showing vice-county occurrence, supported with further detail where relevant. Each species is illustrated by means of one or more coloured photographs of mounted specimens, proportionally sized. For all species, the male and female genitalia are depicted by Josef Razowski’s excellent line drawings. Besides an index to the moth species, there is a comprehensive index to larval food substrates. The original text was formed by the late E.F. (‘Ted’) Hancock and extended and updated by Keith P. Bland. Photographs of the adult moths were done by the latter and line drawings of the genitalia were all done by Josef Razowski.
