Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... A Few Sidelights On Bears "To dream a bear thy self pursues, A cruel foe some mischief brews." --Old Rime. In "Extinct Pennsylvania Animals." Parts I. and II. by the writer of these lines are recorded the unhappy stories of the extermination of a dozen of the larger forms of mammals which once inhabited the Keystone State. They were unnecessarily wiped out of existence* to satisfy man's misguided zeal and rapacity, and for political reasons, to keep the mountaineer vote in line by the payment of '"bounties." Through some miracle of good fortune, the Black Bear has been spared so that we of the present generation can enjoy the presence of this unique game animal in our forests. The deer are also with us, but it is a question as to whether they remain in their native form, or are merely introduced animals from the West and South, and their descendants. The Black Bear was never '"introduced" by Game Department Officials, in fact, was never given a fair chance until a few years ago, when he was on the verge of extermination, trapping and other unfair means of destroying him were forbidden by law. But his enemies will never rest, they want a longer season, they want the privilege of taking him in pens, in addition to the privileges gained in the law which was jammed through the Legislature of 1919. If a protective measure for any animal or bird could go through one quarter as fast, we would have all the game needed in Pennsylvania. The 1919 law was passed in order to nullify improved dog-law in Potter County, and save the scalps of a legion of worthless underfed canines. At that time, and at other times, unlicensed-dogs were ravaging Potter County sheep folds, and it was either annihilate the sheep killing mongrels or blame the "slaughter of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Bear of Pennsylvania (Ursus Americanus) "The Bear is capable of some degree of instruction, there are few but have seen it dance in awkward measure upon its hind feet, to the voice or instrument of its leader; and it must be confessed, that the dancer is is often found to be the best performer of the two. I am told that it is first taught to perform in this manner by setting it upon hot plates of iron and then playing to it while in this uneasy situation." - Oliver Goldsmith About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bears have fascinated people since ancient times. The relationship between bears and humans dates back thousands of years, during which time we have also competed with bears for shelter and food. In modern times, bears have come under pressure through encroachment on their habitats, climate change, and illegal trade in their body parts, including the Asian bile bear market. The IUCN lists six bears as vulnerable or endangered, and even the least concern species, such as the brown bear, are at risk of extirpation in certain countries. The poaching and international trade of these most threatened populations are prohibited, but still ongoing. Covering all bears species worldwide, this beautifully illustrated volume brings together the contributions of 200 international bear experts on the ecology, conservation status, and management of the Ursidae family. It reveals the fascinating long history of interactions between humans and bears and the threats affecting these charismatic species.

Book excerpt: Three species of bear inhabit North America: the grizzly, the polar bear, and the black bear. But the American black bear is truly North America's bear, found only in North America. Black bears range from Canada to Mexico, from New England to California. There may be as many as 750,000 black bears roaming the forests and mountains of the continent. With its large population, and with more people moving into black bear territory, it's important that we understand this magnificent animal. Stephen R. Swinburne takes us to where black bears live. He joins biologists in search of bears in the Pennsylvania woods, where a mother bear is examined and her cubs tagged. He visits a "school teacher" for orphaned cubs who teaches them how to survive in the wild. Along the way, he offers his personal observations together with fascinating facts about black bears and their world. (Did you know that in the autumn, black bears consume as much as twenty thousand calories a day? That's equivalent to forty-two hamburgers!) With stunning full-color and archival photographs, this lively book shows how North America's bear behaves and survives.

Many of these animals are rarely seen except when pursued by an interested biologist, mammologist, or nature photographer. Now, with the publication of this book, student, scholar, and nature lover alike will have a ready reference to distinguish between a deer mouse and a white-footed mouse, to identify raccoon tracks, and to learn about Pennsylvania's other inhabitants. An attractive backpack-size volume, written in lively prose, the Guide to the Mammals of Pennsylvania opens with a short introduction to Pennsylvania's environment and the characteristics defining a mammal. The bulk of the book consists of species accounts of the mammals grouped into families and orders. Each account includes a short list of data, a Pennsylvania range map, a North American range map, and a narrative of the physical, ecological, and behavioral characteristics of the species. Exciting photographs of each of the species in its natural habitat, 17 in color, and drawings of animal tracks are especially useful for identification, and a glossary and a bibliography provide definitions and references for the serious reader. Naturalists, whether amateur or professional, will find the book useful in the field; it will be an indispensable tool in the classroom.
