Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bishop's Conversion It so happens that at the present time India is the most prominent Of the great mission fields of the world, and it is therefore fitting that Mrs. Maxwell should have chosen that great empire as the field from which to draw her illustrations. In many important respects, however, these sketches will be found to represent faithfully scenes in China and other fields. All missions to non-christian countries possess many important features in common. The missionary's problems in one country reappear in another, and hence all foreign missionaries are drawn together when they meet as if by the bonds Of family relation ship. TO defend and help one is to hold up the weary arms of a hundred others. It may confidently be hoped, therefore, that Mrs. Maxwell's effort to speak a word'for her fellow-workers in India will prove of great service to all workers in all lands who belong to the great and growing host Of foreign missionaries. If you intend by it to speak of an Almighty Power, then we agree; but if by it you mean only the creation itself with its several laws and operations, then you jumble cause and effect together. Eh how 18 this? Let me see. The laws and operations of Nature distinct from Nature herself? Well, I begin to see what you mean go on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confessions of a Convert The following chapters were first published, in substance, in the American Catholic magazine, the "Ave Maria," in 1906-1907, and it is by the kind permission of the Editor, Father Hudson, that they are now reprinted, with a few additions and corrections. During the time that has elapsed since their serial appearance, the writer has received a very large number of applications that they should be issued in book form; and after long hesitation, he has acceded to these requests. He hesitated partly because it appeared to him really doubtful whether their issue would be of any real service at all, partly because he occasionally contemplated adding considerably to them, and annexing to them further "confessions of a convert" since his conversion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benediction and the Bishops This book has been rapidly written, after some consultation with others who share the attitude of its author towards the subject, and from materials gradually accumulated during several years of study, with a sense of urgency. The Catholic clergy in the Church of England are face to face with a claim increasingly put forward by their bishops, whom they desire to obey in all things lawful, to forbid Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. The fact that not a few priests have felt it right to admit this claim and to surrender, sorrowfully and under protest, practices which they had adopted for the honour of our Lord and the good of souls, makes it the more important for those who cannot in reason and conscience con sent to such surrender to state clearly and unequivocally the grounds on which they base their refusal. When the quest for truth began, every Catholic doctrine and practice seemed a difficulty; but as light was thrown upon one question after another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conversion of a High Priest Into a Christian Worker In placing this second edition in the hands of my readers I most gratefully acknowledge the splendid assistance of my subscribers, and the kindness with which this book has been received by the General Public, who made it possible for me to accomplish my intended purpose, ever since I left home, that I should give, to the general public, an account of my conversion into a practical Christian worker, know ing that there are a great number of intelligent minds, among the priests, in the greek-russian and Roman Catholic churches, who would make good soldiers of Jesus Christ, and some of them might de velop into heroes of Truth and Righteousness, if they could only deny themselves of the luxuries and lofty life attached to their priesthood. And this prob lem of selfishness is an absolute barrier not only to their own Salvation, but to many a soul, who might have been saved from sin, and be converted to God, and usefulness, but for the Priest. The solution of the problem was the clue which aided me to escape from the labyrinth of doubt; and now, standing upon the rock of unshaken faith, I offer the clue that guided me to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Reformation; The Alleged Conversion of the Irish Bishops: At the Accession of Queen Elizabeth, Descent of the Present Established Hierarchy Ireland From the Ancient Irish Church, Disproved To those who, without being prepared to impeach the good faith of the authorities adduced, wish for further information, it will be satisfactory to learn that in many instances their evidence is verified by independent and indirect testimony from manu scripts in the Bodleian Library and the State Paper Office. Such inquirers after truth will probably attach much weight to the deliberately pronounced decision of Mv. Froude, the historian of England, whose opportunities for forming an impartial judgment have been singularly favourable, and whose evidence, as quoted hereafter, fully bears out the conclusion at which the author had long since arrived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Conversions: Their Manifoldness West, the writer was frequently consulted by members of his congregation regarding the validity of their conversion. After witnessing a revival of religion or listening to the experience of those converted at such a season, they often entertained doubts as to the genuineness of their own conversion. They had accepted the general impression that the means which arrest the sinner's attention, the path through which he is led to the Cross, and the feelings expe rienced on accepting the Saviour, are exactly the same in all cases. The writer has spent many an hour in prayer and in efforts to con vince such that men are not all converted in the same way, made to pass through the same struggles, or to experience the same joys. This has seemed to many like a new revela ton. It has brought them from painful bond age to the liberty of the children of God.
