He was so firm in his practice of Islam that he usually could sense what was right or wrong before the Prophet had informed others of it. He used to say to this friends: if a mule stumbles near the Euphrates River, I fear being questioned by Allah as to why I had not paved the road for it. This book sheds light on the life and struggle of the greatest example of a just ruler. We should follow his footsteps to maintain justice in every walk of our life." -- Back of book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam is a living, breathing and truly eternal 'Way of Life'. A system that empowers us to live the 'highest' and 'best' version of our earthly existences on this planet in the most efficient, beneficial and timely way possible. And since the currency of time on earth is limited, Islam places a strong emphasis on how we can best utilize it. This book evaluates 15 powerful Productivity principles and lessons derived from the life of ʿUmar bin ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, commonly known as ʿUmar II, the 8th Umayyad Caliph. Born in Medina in 682, he was the matrilineal great-grandson of Islam's 2nd Caliph ʿUmar bin Al-Khaṭṭāb. His immensely transformational rule as Caliph lasted from 717 until his death in 720. Despite his short reign, ʿUmar II accomplished major milestones and brought about lasting change in the entire Muslim world through his robust manner of governance. He made solid reforms in provincial administration, military strategy, education, taxation, fair dispensation of charity, and public works. His rule saw developments for construction of canals, roads, rest houses for travelers and medical dispensaries while expanding special programs for orphans and the destitute. One of his biggest accolades included ordering the first official collection of the Prophetic Hadiths in order to preserve them in a diligent and systematized manner so they do not get lost. What You'll Achieve: In this book, we dive deep into identifying, understanding and applying the Productivity gems of ʿUmar II that lead him to govern the Islamic State with great ability and progress until his passing at the young age of just 37. Penned by Shaykh Ismail Kamdar with a foreword from Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, the book is a culmination of restless research, immense hard work, and unwavering passion. Within its inspiring pages you'll find proven and timeless 'practical' lessons on Productivity that blends principles of modern Self-Development with accolades from the magnificence of Islamic history. A glorious history many of us have long forgotten in the noise of the digital contemporary world today. Through the magnifying glass of ʿUmar II's life and legacy of successful governance as Caliph, this book will empower you to achieve the most optimal, efficient and productive version of yourself. A version you can be truly proud of; benefiting those around you, while leaving a lasting legacy of your own for your family and the world - even when you're gone!

Book excerpt: This book is the translation of Volume 7 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn Sa?d which deals with the Companions, Tabi?un and the subsequent generations of the people of knowledge in Basra, Baghdad, Khurasan, Syria and Egypt. This book is of particular interest because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi?un when confronted by the most dangerous of trials ? fitna, or civil war. This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Winner of the Charles H. Levine Memorial Book Prize of the International Political Science Association This comparative analysis probes why conservative renderings of religious tradition in the United States, India, and Egypt remain so influential in the politics of these three ostensibly secular societies. The United States, Egypt, and India were quintessential models of secular modernity in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1980s and 1990s, conservative Islamists challenged the Egyptian government, India witnessed a surge in Hindu nationalism, and the Christian right in the United States rose to dominate the Republican Party and large swaths of the public discourse. Using a nuanced theoretical framework that emphasizes the interaction of religion and politics, Scott W. Hibbard argues that three interrelated issues led to this state of affairs. First, as an essential part of the construction of collective identities, religion serves as a basis for social solidarity and political mobilization. Second, in providing a moral framework, religion's traditional elements make it relevant to modern political life. Third, and most significant, in manipulating religion for political gain, political elites undermined the secular consensus of the modern state that had been in place since the end of World War II. Together, these factors sparked a new era of right-wing religious populism in the three nations. Although much has been written about the resurgence of religious politics, scholars have paid less attention to the role of state actors in promoting new visions of religion and society. Religious Politics and Secular States fills this gap by situating this trend within long-standing debates over the proper role of religion in public life.

Book excerpt: The two books which compose 'Umar ibn al-Khattâb: His Life and Times are sold together as a set. They belong in Part II of the Islamic History Series, as the second set of The Rightly Guided Caliphs. The second caliph of Islam, 'Umar ibn al-Khattâb faced more struggles than any other Muslim leader in the early onset of Islam. His life began in a time of ignorance and ended during the Golden Age of Islam. Under his leadership, the Muslim world was witnessing some of its most notable conquests in the history of Islam. The strength and resilience of Islam's leaders were being tested, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattâb's true commitment to Allah shone to reveal an Islamic spirit unlike that found in any other Muslim leader. The standards by which he lived can teach us a lot about determination, hardship, and success. This book was translated into English by Nasiruddin al-Khattab, who writes: For those who would be leaders, this book offers the model of an ideal Muslim leader, one who felt responsible before Allah for the well being of all those under his rule, including his troops, women, infants, non-Muslim subjects and even animals. 'Umar was a 'hands on' leader who kept himself informed and consulted scholars and experts before every major decision. For the rest of us, this book offers a window into an exciting and important period of Islamic history, and it also reminds of an important lesson, that our strength comes not from wealth or money or status, but from our submission to Allah and our commitment to the path of Islam.

Book excerpt: This revisionist account of the history of Islamic political thought from the early to the late medieval period focuses on Ibn Taymiyya, one of the most brilliant theologians of his day. This original study demonstrates how his influence shed new light on the entire trajectory of Islamic political thought. Although he did not reject the Caliphate ideal, as is commonly believed, he nevertheless radically redefined it by turning it into a rational political institution intended to serve the community (umma). Through creative reinterpretation, he deployed the Qur'anic concept of fitra (divinely endowed human nature) to centre the community of believers and its common-sense reading of revelation as the highest epistemic authority. In this way, he subverted the elitism that had become ensconced in classical theological, legal and spiritual doctrines, and tried to revive the ethico-political, rather than strictly legal, dimension of Islam. In reassessing Ibn Taymiyya's work, this book marks a major departure from traditional interpretations of medieval Islamic thought.
