Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations: Expository, Scienti c, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From, a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Deuteronomy The character OF the book. - The speeches exhibit a striking unity of style and character. They are pervaded by the same vein of thought, the same tone and tenor of feeling, the same peculiarities of conception and expression. They exhibit matter which is neither documentary nor traditional, but conveyed in the speaker's own words. Their aim is strictly hortatory their style earnest, heart-searching, impressive, in passages sublime, but throughout rhetorical they keep constantly in view the cir cumstances then present, and the crisis to which the fortunes of Israel had at last been brought. Moses had before him not the men to whom by God's command he delivered the law at Sinai, but the generation following which had grown up in the wilderness. Large portions of the law necessarily stood in abeyance during the years of wandering; and of his present hearers many must have been strangers to various prescribed Observances and ordinances. Now, however, on their entry into settled homes in Canaan a thorough discharge of the various obligations laid on them by the covenant would become imperative and it is to this state of things that Moses addresses himself. He speaks to hearers neither wholly ignorant of the law, nor yet fully versed in it. Much is assumed and taken for granted in his speeches again, on other matters he goes into detail, knowing that instruction in them was needed. Sometimes, too, opportunity is taken of promulgating regula tions which are supplementary or auxiliary to those of the preceding books some few modifications arising out of different or altered circumstances are now made and the whole Mosaic system is completed by the addition of several enactments (chaps. Xii. - xxvi.) of a social, civil, and political nature. These would have been wholly super uous during the nomadic life of the desert but now, when the per manent organisation of Israel as a nation was to be accomplished, they could not be longer deferred. Accordingly the legislator, at the command of God, completes his great work by supplying them. Thus he provides civil institutions for his people accredited by the same Divine sanctions as had been vouchsafed to their religious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations: Expository, Scienti c, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible With regard to the order of the grouping of the words, it may be said that the usual arrangement of Indices has been carried out - the singular and its possessive are invariably followed by the plural and its possessive - even where the word ends in y, as being easier to find. The only noteworthy exceptions are in the cases of man and men, and a few others where the vowel is changed. All the nouns, the important adjectives, and the more prominent verbs will be found included in this Index, and in a few instances a well-known adverb is given. To save space the particles a and the will generally be found to be omitted throughout; the rare cases in which they appear being those in which they are necessary to make the subject-heading clear. The capital letters, I., and A., are, as indicated on page 1, designed to show whether the heading indicates a Sermon outline, Illustration, or Anecdote. The small numerals indicate the volume in which these may be found where more than one volume has been issued on the Scripture Book. Full advantage has been taken of cross references, in order that all the terms used for the same item searched for can be made of use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator; Or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible Tm: Canomorrr or me Boom - The collection of sacred writings which was held in reverence by the Jews of Palestine in the days of our Lord and His apostles, consisted of twenty-two books, and these included the Book of Ecclesiastes. The first preachers of Christianity appear to have been in complete agreement with their unconverted brethren as to the authority of their sacred books; and in point of fact, all the books of the Jewish canon have always enjoyed unquestioned authority in the Christian Church. It is no disparagement to the authority of the Book of Ecclesiastes that no direct quotation from it is to be found in the New Testament. A few coincidences of thought or expression have been pointed out (0. G. Eccles. Xi. 5 with John iii. 8; Eccles. Ix. 10 with John ix. But none of them is decisive enough to warrant our asserting with any confidence that the Old Testament passage was present to the mind of the New Testament writer. 'but there is no reason to imagine that any of the apostles would have hesitated to appeal to the authority of any book of the Jewish canon, if his subject had required such a reference. In the Jewish schools there was controversy, about the end of the first century of our era, whether the Book of Ecclesiastes was one of those which defile the hands that is to say, whether it was affected by certain ceremonial ordinances, devised in order to guard the sacred books from irreverent usage. We need not inquire what exact amount of authority might be conceded to the book by those who then placed it on a lower level than the rest; for the view which ultimately prevailed recognized it as entitled to all the prerogatives of canonical Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 1: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Hebrews Objection to this theory that the Church of Alexandria retained no tradition that this E pistle was written by their brilliant fellow-countryman. But although Apollos was an Alexandrian by birth and training, it does not follow that he had lived in his native city, and as he had left the ci before he became a Christian, he might have been a stranger to the Alexan an Christians. We do not hear a word about the Epistle in that Church until a century after it was written. At any rate, this difficulty is not so great as that which arises from the supposition that the Epistle was the work of St. Paul, and yet was not recog nised as such for some centuries by the Western Church, and only partially and hesitatingly by the Eastern. For there would be every temptation to attri bute the work to the apostle, and none to associate it with the name of Apollos, which, except in one or two Churches, seems to have been but little known. It is not a decisive objection to the Apollonian authorship that no one is known to have suggested it before Luther. In the early centuries the Epistle was only assigned to this or that author by a process of tentative guesswork. Those who saw that St. Paul could not have been the actual author often adapted one of the arbitrary hypotheses, that it is a translation, or that the sentiments and the language were supplied by different persons. The self-suppression of Apollos resulted in the comparative obscurity of his work, and the Fathers, having nothing but conjecture to deal with, fixed upon names every one of which was more generally familiar than that of the eloquent Alexandrian. And it it be strange that the name of Apollos should not have been preserved by the Church to which the letter was despatched, we may account for this by the absence of superscription, and by the fact that it was only addressed to the Jewish section of that Church. This much may be said with certainty, that if it were not written by Apollos, at any rate the evidence which points to him as its author is more various and more conclusive than that which can be adduced to support the claims of any one else. (archdeacon Farrar.) May we not say that this Epistle resembles, in these respects, the great Melchisedec of sacred story, of whom its central portion treats? Like him, it marches forth in lonely, royal, and sacerdotal dignity, and like him is without genealogy. We know not whence it cometh nor whither it goeth. (f. Delitzsch, D.D.) Whoever is the author of this Epistle, its value and authority remain the same. We may compare it, says Thiersch, to a painting of perfect beauty, which had been regarded as a work of Raphael. If it should be proved that it was not painted by flagged, Ii: have thereby not lost a classical piece of art, but gained another master 0 t ta. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible: St. Matthew Tun Nam - new Tasmanian - The term, New Testament, is unquestionably connected with the institution of the Lord's Supper. The Lord Himself designates the Eucharist the New Covenant in His blood, and this name is strictly correct. The New Testament fellowship of believers reconciled to God by Christ, which, so to speak, commences in, and is introduced by baptism, is completed and appears outwardly in the Holy Supper. In the Eucharist the Lord carries out that New Covenant with the Church which is founded upon His holy life and His Word, upon His atoning death, His victory, and on the conversion of individual believers. While the celebration of the Eucharist is a remembrance of the first foundation of the Church, it ever inaugurates anew the formation of the Church, and also serves for its manifestation. Hence the writings which record the foundation'of this new. And eternal Covenant are themselves called the New Covenant, the New Testament. Lastly, this designation indicates the connection and the contrast between these writings and those of the Old Covenant. (j. P. Lange, D.D.)
