Book Synopsis New Vision for an Old Story by : Anne Robertson
Download or read book New Vision for an Old Story written by Anne Robertson and published by Eerdmans. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Anne Robertson asked a bunch of people on the street what came to mind when they heard the word Bible, she was met with a flood of mixed responses, including "wisdom," "truth," and "love", but also such words as "myth," "lies," "bigotry," and "poison." What she realized was that we all read the Bible through filtered lenses, according to our varied expectations of what the Bible is or should be. But, as Robertson shows here, the Bible as a whole is primarily God's story--a story of relationship, community, and love. Robertson's New Vision for an Old Story gives readers the right lenses to see beyond the printed page to the God who encounters us in dynamic relationship and transforms our lives. The very nature and message of Scripture are rooted in incarnation. When we need to navigate community, truth, fear, and suffering, the Bible-- God's own story--can guide us through it all.
Book Synopsis History of Biblical Interpretation, Volume 4 by : Henning Graf Reventlow
Download or read book History of Biblical Interpretation, Volume 4 written by Henning Graf Reventlow and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2009 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the first three volumes of History of Biblical Interpretation, From the Enlightenment to the Twentieth Century surveys the lives and works of significant theologians and lay people, politicians and philosophers, in order to portray the characteristic attitudes of the era. It discusses the philosophers and politicians Hobbes, Locke, and Spinoza and the writers Lessing and Herder. Biblical criticism per se begins with the controversy over the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament and extends into Enlightenment ethics, myth, and miracle stories. Early representatives include Richard Simon and Hermann Samuel Reimarus, followed by Johann Salomo Semler, Johann Jakob Griesbach, Johann Gottfried Eichhorn, and Philipp Jacob Spener. Biblical scholars such as Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette, Ferdinand Christian Baur, Heinrich Julius Holtzmann, Julius Wellhausen, Hermann Gunkel, Wilhelm Bousset, Karl Barth, and Rudolf Bultmann round out the volume and bring readers to the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis The Four Vision Quests of Jesus by : Steven Charleston
Download or read book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus written by Steven Charleston and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique look at Christian biblical interpretation and theology from the perspective of Native American tradition. This book focuses on four specific experiences of Jesus as portrayed in the synoptic gospels. It examines each story as a “vision quest,” a universal spiritual phenomenon, but one of particular importance within North American indigenous communities. Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is the first quest. It speaks to a foundational Native American value: the need to enter into the “we” rather than the “I.” The Transfiguration is the second quest, describing the Native theology of transcendent spirituality that impacts reality and shapes mission. Gethsemane is the third quest. It embodies the Native tradition of the holy men or women, who find their freedom through discipline and concerns for justice, compassion, and human dignity. Golgotha is the final quest. It represents the Native sacrament of sacrifice (e.g., the Sun Dance). The chapter on Golgotha is a discussion of kinship, balance, and harmony: all primary to Native tradition and integral to Christian thought.

This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the Bible's role in the modern world - beginning with a treatment of its production and distribution that discusses publishers, printers, text critics, and translators and continuing with a presentation of new methods of studying the text that have emerged, including historical, literary, social-scientific, feminist, postcolonial, liberal, and fundamentalist readings. There is a full discussion of the changes in understandings of and approaches to the Bible in various faith communities. The dissemination of the Bible throughout the globe has also produced a host of new interpretations, and this volume provides a comprehensive geographical survey of its reception. In the final chapters, the authors offer a thematic overview of the Bible in relation to literature, art, film, science, and other disciplines. They demonstrate that, in spite of challenges to the Bible's authority in western Europe, it remains highly relevant and influential, not least in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Book Synopsis Historical Phases of Prophetic Teaching Volume IV by : Evelyn Theresa Watson
Download or read book Historical Phases of Prophetic Teaching Volume IV written by Evelyn Theresa Watson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume IV the author, Evelyn Theresa Watson, compares the Revelator's words to scriptural and gospel prophecy verifying the doctrinal mystery and miracle that lie behind the religious warfare of past and present ages. Her commentary presents THE REVELATION OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE as a treatise on the life and time of Jesus Christ as the messenger of the messianic message unto the seven churches. She attests to the Revelator's seven visions of revealed prophecy which retell the previous two thousand years of unfulfilled scriptural prophecy and foretell one hundred years of fulfilled gospel prophecy. The author correlates these two time periods to the nineteen hundred years of biblical prophecy that followed. The beginning of the twenty-first century marks the end times of the Bible's historical phases of prophetic teaching.
