Book excerpt: PREFACEIn preparing a book for publication entitled "Gems from Proverbs," I came across this sermon by Brother Spurgeon. While reading it, I felt transported to a heavenly place. Every word seemed to be like poetry to me. Certainly this is one of Spurgeon's best.Being still inspired and lifted up by this sermon, the thought came to publish just this one sermon so that others who know nothing about him may be as enthralled by his preaching as well. To those who love him and read him regularly, this book shall be a lovely golden nugget that you can read again and again.God blessed Spurgeon and his preaching, and my prayer is that He will bless all who read this book as well. You will find it is a little piece of heaven come down to touch your soul.

Book excerpt: It was January 1976 that I began to read Spurgeon's Devotional Bible as a first year student at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. I still remember the place I would sit each morning and evening as I read a portion of this precious book. The Lord used this volume to sift me and humble me and teach me of Himself through His Word and His servant Charles H. Spurgeon. Thanks to the encouragement of a faithful customer from Nebraska this new edition is about to see the light of day once again. As you will soon see, it is a precious volume that leads you from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, but not in the way you might expect. An example hits you immediately on the first day, which begins with Genesis 1:1-5, and then proceeds to consider John 1:1-14. Then on the second devotional reading you begin with Genesis 1:6-13 and conclude with Proverbs 8:22-36. And on the third one you begin with Genesis 1:14-23 and then consider Psalm 148. The great principle of Scripture Interpreting Scripture is the constant method of this work. The gist of the entire Bible is contained between the covers of this book. The passages omitted are almost always summarized wherever possible. To reduce a passage to proper length, verses are naturally omitted in whole or in part, but in such a way that the narrative or teaching remains clear and unimpaired. The book can be read through in one year when morning and evening devotions are maintained. Where only one portion is read per day, observance of the second date, which is inserted below the first in smaller type, will render the volume useful for two full years. Very wisely, in most cases, just one page completes the devotional reading. On page 481 there is a title page which announces the original intention of the work. There we are told that this work contains Selections for Reading at Family Prayer Mainly from the New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with Brief Notes and Comments by C.H. Spurgeon. May the Lord of Glory use this work once again to lead families across the world before the Throne of Grace where they will find grace to help in their time of need.

Book excerpt: Jesus Christ saves radically depraved men, women, and children from their sins. However, to understand, believe, and love the good news about the crucified and resurrected Savior, we must first understand our condition. Thus, we offer this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster: Radical Depravity. Arthur Pink introduces us to this weighty subject by asking the question, “Is man a totally and thoroughly depraved creature by nature?” Thomas Reade then tells us about the deadly consequences and bitter fruits of Adam’s fall: in Adam all die. We then consider Joel Beeke’s helpful survey of the doctrine of human depravity. A second article by Thomas Reade leads us to a painful truth: the heart of man is evil. But he does not leave us there: he takes us to the blessed Son of God for deliverance. John Owen describes with great clarity the depraved and corrupted state of man’s mind and teaches us that the only remedy for this great darkness is the new birth: “You must be born again.” Loraine Boettner explains the extent and effects of original sin, which results in human inability in the matters of salvation. What is our true spiritual condition outside of Christ? Charles Spurgeon declares that we are legally, spiritually, and eternally dead. Nevertheless, he also tells us that we can be legally, spiritually, eternally alive by faith in Jesus Christ the Son! We then hear from John Flavel that in mercy, grace, and love, God draws sinners to Jesus Christ, gradually, suitably, powerfully, effectually, and finally. That is indeed good news! J. C. Ryle brings our subject to a close by asking a penetrating question: “Are you dead or alive?” Each of us, dear readers, must answer that question.

Book excerpt: Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your slave. – Matthew 20:27 You cannot have Christ if you will not serve Him. If you take Christ, you must take Him in all His qualities. You must not simply take Him as a Friend, but you must also take Him as your Master. If you are to become His disciple, you must also become His servant. God-forbid that anyone fights against that truth. It is certainly one of our greatest delights on earth to serve our Lord, and this is to be our joyful vocation even in heaven itself: His servants shall serve Him: and they shall see His face (Revelation 22:3-4). Charles H. Spurgeon originally wrote this book for members of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor. Spurgeon's heartfelt writing style makes this book one that today still encourages believers to move into Christian action. He emphasizes simply moving forward, using the talents and resources you already have at your disposal, for the Lord's service and your own eternal reward. The concepts presented are easy to understand and straight-forward, if only you are ready to lay down your life to follow Christ. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of Susannah Spurgeon. While many Christians recognize the name of Charles H. Spurgeon, the beloved preacher and writer, few are familiar with the life and legacy of his wife, Susie. Yet Susannah Spurgeon was an accomplished and devout woman of God who had a tremendous ministry in her own right, as well as in support of her husband. Even while dealing with serious health issues, she administered a book fund for poor pastors, edited and published her husband’s sermons and other writings, led a pastor’s aid ministry, wrote five books, made her home a hub of hospitality, and was instrumental in planting a church. And as her own writing attests, she was also a warm, charming, and fascinating woman. Now, for the first time, Susie brings this vibrant woman’s story to modern readers. Ray Rhodes Jr. examines Susannah’s life, showing that she was not only the wife of London’s most famous preacher, but also a woman who gave all she had in grateful service to the Lord. Susie is an inspiring and encouraging account of a truly remarkable woman of faith that will delight Spurgeon devotees and fans of Christian biographies alike. “I am writing in my husband’s study, where he thought, and prayed, and wrote. Every inch of the place is sacred ground. Everything remains precisely as he left it. His books (now my most precious possessions), stand in shining rows upon the shelves, in exactly the order in which he placed them, and one might almost fancy the room was ready and waiting for its master. But oh! That empty chair! That great portrait over the door! The strange, solemn silence, which pervades the place now that he is no longer on earth! I kneel sometimes by his chair, and laying my head on the cushioned arms, which so long supported his dear form, I pour out my grief before the Lord, and tell Him again that though I am left alone, yet I know that ‘He hath done all things well’…”
