He married Jane Patterson in 1858 in London, immigrating to Australia immediately, and immigrating in 1860 to New Zealand. They returned to England in 1870, and in 1875 immigrated to Alexandria, Virginia (after first trying to settle at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, California and elsewhere. Includes ancestry in England and Scotland to 1066 A.D.

Book excerpt: Genealogy of the Canberra Bewleys 1600-2021. Hazel Kerr was born to a sixteen-year-old girl on 13th May 1924. For most of her life she tried, without success, to discover her roots. As she was approaching her 70th birthday she passed to me a small handwritten note and told me that this was the text of an advertisement in which she was offered for adoption at just 3 days of age.The advertisement for Hazel's adoption was found in the Melbourne Age of 16th May 1924. This sparked an interest in discovering Hazel's story, and with her story the stories of other forebears. It eventually led to the discovery of ancestors from Ireland, England and Scotland, and an Ashkenazi Jewish branch of the family with roots in Russia and Poland. Among them were people from all types of backgrounds. They ranged from wealthy land owners to the poorest of the poor. The search revealed fervently religious types, fortune-seekers, tradesmen, businessmen, professional people, criminals and even an axe-murderer, as well as several 19th Century English and Irish Convicts. Without Hazel's quest for knowledge, this book would never have been written. Like many other family histories from settler societies around the globe, it reveals how diverse backgrounds and experiences constitute a rich tapestry which helps us understand where we have come from. This then is Hazel's Legacy. Philip Bewley is a 5th generation Australian. This book has been meticulously researched and documented and will inspire and assist others who wish to explore their heritage.

Book excerpt: Figures from the Scots-Irish Andrew Jackson to the Caribbean-Irish Rihanna, as well as literature, film, caricature, and beauty discourse, convey how the Irish racially transformed multiple times: in the slave-holding Caribbean, on America's frontiers and antebellum plantations, and along its eastern seaboard. This cultural history of race and centuries of Irishness in the Americas examines the forcibly transported Irish, the eighteenth-century Presbyterian Ulster-Scots, and post-1845 Famine immigrants. Their racial transformations are indicated by the designations they acquired in the Americas: 'Redlegs,' 'Scots-Irish,' and 'black Irish.' In literature by Fitzgerald, O'Neill, Mitchell, Glasgow, and Yerby (an African-American author of Scots-Irish heritage), the Irish are both colluders and victims within America's racial structure. Depictions range from Irish encounters with Native and African Americans to competition within America's immigrant hierarchy between 'Saxon' Scots-Irish and 'Celtic' Irish Catholic. Irish-connected presidents feature, but attention to queer and multiracial authors, public women, beauty professionals, and performers complicates the 'Irish whitening' narrative. Thus, 'Irish Princess' Grace Kelly's globally-broadcast ascent to royalty paves the way for 'America's royals,' the Kennedys. The presidencies of the Scots-Irish Jackson and Catholic-Irish Kennedy signalled their respective cohorts' assimilation. Since Gothic literature particularly expresses the complicity that attaining power ('whiteness') entails, subgenres named 'Scots-Irish Gothic' and 'Kennedy Gothic' are identified: in Gothic by Brown, Poe, James, Faulkner, and Welty, the violence of the colonial Irish motherland is visited upon marginalized Americans, including, sometimes, other Irish groupings. History is Gothic in Irish-American narrative because the undead Irish past replays within America's contexts of race.
