Download or read book A Memoir on The Physical Review written by Paul Hartman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market: Those interested in the development of 20th-century science. A modest scientific review begun by Cornell University in 1893, The Physical Review is today the most prestigious and wide-ranging collection of archival journals of American physics. To celebrate the centenary of this influential publication, Cornell professor Paul Hartman provides an informal, anecdote-rich history of the journal. This book offers readers a special opportunity to meet the scientists who initiated and nurtured the magazine and revisit landmark papers, abstracts from meetings of the American Physical Society, and articles that chronicled advances in world physics.
Book Synopsis Atomic Physics 5 by : Richard Marrus
Download or read book Atomic Physics 5 written by Richard Marrus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Conference on Atomic Physics was held July 26-30, 1976 in Berkeley, California. Invited talks were solicited which were representative of the most important developments since the fourth conference held in Heidelberg, Germany in 1974. In this volume, we have collected the manuscripts of the invited speakers, in the belief that they represent a guide to contemporary re search in atomic physics. Experimental work on such topics as the search for parity violation, spectroscopy and collision processes of fast, highly-stripped heavy ions, exotic atoms, high-Rydberg states, laser spectros copy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and others are described. The work described in these manuscripts is a clear mea sure of the continued vitality of our field. One unhappy event since the last conference was the passing of Dr. Victor William (Bill) Cohen (1911-1974) of Brookhaven National Laboratory. Bill was one of the scientists who recognized early the need for personal communication among atomic physicists and was the prime mover in establishing the present international conference series. Everyone who has enjoyed the stimulation of these conferences is indebted to Bill Cohen, and we dedicate this volume of the proceedings to his memory.

Book Synopsis Relativistic Many-Body Theory by : Ingvar Lindgren
Download or read book Relativistic Many-Body Theory written by Ingvar Lindgren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of relativistic many-body perturbation theory, based upon field theory. After some introductory chapters about time-independent and time dependent many-body perturbation theory (MBPT), the standard techniques of S-matrix and Green’s functions are reviewed. Next, the newly introduced covariant-evolution-operator method is described, which can be used, like the S-matrix method, for calculations in quantum electrodynamics (QED). Unlike the S-matrix method, this has a structure that is similar to that of MBPT and therefore can serve as basis for a unified theory. Such an approach is developed in the final chapters, and its equivalence to the Bethe-Salpeter equation is demonstrated. Possible applications are discussed and numerical illustrations given.
Book Synopsis Relativistic Quantum Mechanics of Leptons and Fields by : W.T. Grandy
Download or read book Relativistic Quantum Mechanics of Leptons and Fields written by W.T. Grandy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material contained in this work concerns relativistic quantum mechanics, and as such pertains to classical fields. On the one hand it is meant to serve as a text on the subject, a desire stemming from the author's fruitless searches for an adequate, up-to-date reference when lecturing on these topics. At times the supplementary material was found to exceed by far that in the assigned text. On the other hand, there is some flavor of a monograph to what follows, most particularly in the later chapters, for a major goal is to demonstrate just how far we can advance our understanding of the behavior of stable particles and their interactions without introducing quantized fields. Those wishing to describe the world in this way may view the result as a point of departure, despite the fact that their wish remains unfulfilled. Confirmed quantum-field theorists, however, will doubtless view it as a summary of just why they feel compelled to quantize the fields. Approximately half the book is devoted to the single-particle Dirac equation and its solutions. A great deal of detail is provided in this respect, and the discus sion is reasonably comprehensive. The Dirac equation is extraordinarily important in its own right, particularly as a basis for quantum electrodynamics (QED), and is thus worthy of extensive study.
