Book excerpt: A masterful and eye-opening examination of Trump and the coercive control tactics he uses to build a fanatical devotion in his supporters written by “an authority on breaking away from cults…an argument that…bears consideration as the next election cycle heats up” (Kirkus Reviews). Since the 2016 election, Donald Trump’s behavior has become both more disturbing and yet increasingly familiar. He relies on phrases like, “fake news,” “build the wall,” and continues to spread the divisive mentality of us-vs.-them. He lies constantly, has no conscience, never admits when he is wrong, and projects all of his shortcomings on to others. He has become more authoritarian, more outrageous, and yet many of his followers remain blindly devoted. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert and a major Trump supporter, calls him one of the most persuasive people living. His need to squash alternate information and his insistence of constant ego stroking are all characteristics of other famous leaders—cult leaders. In The Cult of Trump, mind control and licensed mental health expert Steven Hassan draws parallels between our current president and people like Jim Jones, David Koresh, Ron Hubbard, and Sun Myung Moon, arguing that this presidency is in many ways like a destructive cult. He specifically details the ways in which people are influenced through an array of social psychology methods and how they become fiercely loyal and obedient. Hassan was a former “Moonie” himself, and he presents a “thoughtful and well-researched analysis of some of the most puzzling aspects of the current presidency, including the remarkable passivity of fellow Republicans [and] the gross pandering of many members of the press” (Thomas G. Gutheil, MD and professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School). The Cult of Trump is an accessible and in-depth analysis of the president, showing that under the right circumstances, even sane, rational, well-adjusted people can be persuaded to believe the most outrageous ideas. “This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the current political climate” (Judith Stevens-Long, PhD and author of Living Well, Dying Well).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Cult Cinema offers an overview of the field of cult cinema – films at the margin of popular culture and art that have received exceptional cultural visibility and status mostly because they break rules, offend, and challenge understandings of achievement (some are so bad they’re good, others so good they remain inaccessible). Cult cinema is no longer only comprised of the midnight movie or the extreme genre film. Its range has widened and the issues it broaches have become battlegrounds in cultural debates that typify the first quarter of the twenty-first century. Sections are introduced with the major theoretical frameworks, philosophical inspirations, and methodologies for studying cult films, with individual chapters excavating the most salient criticism of how the field impacts cultural discourse at large. Case studies include the worst films ever; exploitation films; genre cinema; multiple media formats cult cinema is expressed through; issues of cultural, national, and gender representations; elements of the production culture of cult cinema; and, throughout, aspects of the aesthetics of cult cinema – its genre, style, look, impact, and ability to yank viewers out of their comfort zones. The Routledge Companion to Cult Cinema goes beyond the traditional scope of Anglophone and North American cinema by including case studies of East and South Asia, continental Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America, making it an innovative and important resource for researchers and students alike.

As he digs deeper into the cult, he finds his sanity and reality only meet over extreme violence. The girls and some of their new friends have no idea what is coming their way, when they decide to attend this summer's biggest concert event...' The Summer Solstice Festival'._____________________________________________________________________Review of the screenplay.. 'The Summer of the Seven Seals'This story is a 'Part 2' in what the writer intends to be a trilogy of 'dramatic horror' genre. In a movie industry that has released several drama driven horrors over the past few years, this screenplay could match up well with recent films such as Hereditary and Get Out.The writer has constructed a character driven extremely violent horror/slasher screenplay. The story is based around a group of female friends, who have struggled with their lives since the horrible events of an attack on them two years earlier. In this installment, the girls attend a concert festival in their hometown of Scranton, Pa.The first half is delivered with more of a slower suspense building tone.Quickly, things unravel as the group tries to enjoy the concert weekend. The killer plays by no ones rules except his own. A friend, mixed into their own group, we get to see him lose his sanity as he tries to tribute the violence to a cultist ritual. The story builds and twists quite a few times before it's violent and almost empathetic end.As a long running fan of the horror genre, it's nice to finally see a script that is never light on character and still gives you realistic and violent kills. It was my pleasure to be one of the first readers of this screenplay.Chad HoyValley View, PA_____________________________________________________________________Read part 1 now... In the course of a Dungeons & Dragons game, a Dungeon Master has to make one decision after another in response to player behavior—and the better the players, the more unpredictable their behavior! It’s easy for even an experienced DM to get bogged down in on-the-spot decision-making or to let combat devolve into a boring slugfest, with enemies running directly at the player characters and biting, bashing, and slashing away. In The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, Keith Ammann lightens the DM’s burden by helping you understand your monsters’ abilities and develop battle plans before your fifth edition D&D game session begins. Just as soldiers don’t whip out their field manuals for the first time when they’re already under fire, a DM shouldn’t wait until the PCs have just encountered a dozen bullywugs to figure out how they advance, fight, and retreat. Easy to read and apply, The Monsters Know What They're Doing is essential reading for every DM.

This shocking and darkly comic sequel is set well after the harrowing events of the first book, and is just as compelling and suspenseful. It is now 1999, and Rosemary Woodhouse awakens from a decades-long coma to find herself in a drastically changed world. She soon discovers her son is already thirty-three years old, an a charismatic spiritual leader worshipped the world over, preaching a message of tolerance and peace. But is “Andy” the savior the troubled world so desperately needs, or is he his father’s son—the Antichrist? Master of suspense Ira Levin’s sardonic and thought-provoking exploration of good and evil, Son of Rosemary, finds Rosemary and her child reunited in a battle of wills that could determine not just the course of the new millennium—but the very fate of humankind.

Hunter draws on rare archival material and new primary research to take us through the weird and wonderful world of British trash cinema. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is not captivated by tales of Islanders earnestly scanning their watery horizons for great fleets of cargo ships bringing rice, radios and refrigerators - ships that will never arrive? Of all the stories spun about the island peoples of Melanesia, tales of cargo cult are among the most fascinating. The term cargo cult, Lamont Lindstrom contends, is one of anthropology's most successful conceptual offspring. Like culture, worldview and ethnicity, its usage has steadily proliferated, migrating into popular culture where today it is used to describe an astonishing roll-call of people. It's history makes for lively and compelling reading. The cargo cult story, Lindstrom shows, is more significant than it at first appears, for it recapitulates in summary form three generations of anthropological theory and Pacific studies. Although anthropologists' enthusiasm for the notion of cargo cult has waned, it now colors outsiders' understanding of Melanesian culture, and even Melanesians' perceptions of themselves. The repercussions for contemporary Islanders are significant: leaders of more than one political movement have felt the need to deny that they are any kind of cargo cultist. Of particular interest to this history is Lindstom's argument that accounts of cargo cult are at heart tragedies of thwarted desire, melancholy anticipation and crazy unrequited love. He makes a convincing case that these stories expose powerful Western scenarios of desire itself—giving cargo cult its combined titillation of the fascinating exotic and the comfortably familiar.
