Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1930, Vol. 9: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication As has been stated by Mr. Gifford, President of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, The ideal and aim today of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and its Associated Companies is a telephone service for the nation, free, so far as humanly possible, from imperfections, errors, or delays, and enabling at all times any one anywhere to pick up a telephone and talk to any one else anywhere else, clearly, quickly and at a reasonable cost. With this aim in view, continuous effort is made further to improve and to extend the service within the nation and also the telephonic con nections to other nations. It is recognized also that changes in business and social conditions bring about repeated changes in the services desired by the people of the nation and in the character and appearance of facilities furnished to them. These facts, in addition to the onward march of the application of science, form an important basis for the continued study by the general staff of the development of all phases of the telephone system. A few figures relative to the size and growth of the Bell System are helpful in an understanding of the more specific telephone prob lems which are discussed below. Such figures are included in the statistical summary appended to this paper and include data regarding telephone messages, numbers of telephones, miles of wire and amount Of telephone plant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1939, Vol. 18: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication Certain types of electrostatic fields may be used as lenses to focus electron beams. The theory of these lenses is developed for electric fields that are symmetrical about a central axis. The introduction of two velocity functions exactly reduces the partial differential equations of electron motion to a series of ordinary differential equations. The first equation describes the action of a lens for electron paths near the axis; the remaining equations determine the higher order aberration terms. Sections on the following subjects are included: the general equations of electron optics, thin lenses, thick lenses, aberration, the reduction of aberra ration, apertured plates, and concentric tubes. A list of symbols and lens equations is also included at the end of the article. N certain types of modern vacuum tubes, a beam of electrons is brought to a focus by an electrostatic field whose action on the beam is analogous to that of an optical lens on a beam of light. An electrostatic field which acts in this manner is called an electron lens. Such lenses are rapidly finding applications in amplifier tubes, tele vision and oscillograph tubes, electron microscopes, and various types of experimental apparatus. As the extent of their application widens, the theory of these lenses naturally assumes a corresponding importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1945, Vol. 24: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication T has been known for a long time that all kinds of oscillators are subject to the trouble variously referred to as intermittent oscillation, motor boating, or squegging. In conventional circuits such as the Hartley the phenomenon is most likely to be observed if the grid leak and grid condenser are abnormally large. It is found that the time constant of this combina tion must be reduced as the frequency is raised and as the Q of the resonant circuit is decreased. At frequencies above a few hundred megacycles the problem of producing a practical circuit with suitable margin of stability is quite difficult. With the advent of the oscillator having automatic output control the problem assumed a new aspect}, 2 By application of an amplified control circuit a high degree of constancy of output together with low harmonic output is obtained. Satisfactory Operation is secured, however, only when suitable attention is given to\the characteristics of the control circuit. The intentional generation of pulses by means of intermittent oscillations of relatively high frequency has been studied to some extent, and circuits of this kind are employed in some television systems. Usually the high frequency oscillation is limited to a small portion of the low-frequency cycle, the charge stored during this period being allowed to dissipate itself relatively slowly during the remainder of the cycle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1927, Vol. 6: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication With the rapid development of electro-technics an increasing number Of problems is being encountered where the application Of classical electric circuit theory is Of doubtful validity, or where the conclusions derived from it must be interpreted with great care. Such problems are the result not only Of the use of very high frequency in radio transmission but arise also in connection with the need Of a more precise theory Of wire transmission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1923, Vol. 1 Modern industry is characterized by the extent to which scientific research and technique based on precise study have contributed to its progress. So complete has been the adaptation of and reliance on scientific research in many industries that it is difficult at this time to visualize the state of affairs of two or three decades ago, when substantially all industry on its technical side was dependent for advancement on cut-and-try, rule-of-thumb, methods of development. Today in many industries the management would not think of embarking on a new project without consulting their research engineers. Many industries have proved the benefits to be derived from the utilization of that organized knowledge provided both in the fields of the physical sciences and in those newer fields which have to do with psychology and economics. There are still greater numbers of industrial organizations where the adoption of scientific methods has been slow. However, the time will undoubtedly come when every industry will recognize the aid it can derive from scientific research in some form as it now recognizes its dependence for motive power on steam or electricity rather than on muscular activity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1933, Vol. 12: Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication Pen wires were almost universally used for the transmission of speech in the days when telephony was young but gradually as the need arose the art of cable making was evolved. Today, except in the rural districts, the open-wire lines have been almost entirely re placed by aerial or underground cable. The conductors in the early metal covered cables were insulated with one or two servings of cotton but in the late eighties Bell System engineers developed a spirally wrapped paper insulation so much better electrically and lower in cost that it was shortly adopted as the standard insulation for telephone cables by the growing industry.' Now after some forty years of service this type of insulation is being rapidly displaced for inter Office and subscriber loop cables by a pulp insulation applied directly to the conductor by a process which brings the paper mill into the cable plant and combines the paper making and insulating operations into one process with the elimination of a number of costly intermediate steps. In addition, this process makes possible the use of a less expensive material as an insulating medium. In order to establish a background for the logical consideration of the pulp insulation development it is desirable to cover briefly the materials, equipment and methods that have gradually been developed for the rapid application and economic use of paper ribbon insulation and indicate the limitations involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1941, Vol. 20 Whether sampling may be employed to advantage in place of 100% inspection usually depends, of course, on the purpose for which inspection is made. The sampling tables here presented provide definite procedures for conducting inspections that have certain immediate purposes which are described in some detail. Through their provision for instituting a screening inspection whenever quality falls below an acceptable level, the procedures have been found in practice to enforce a program of controlling quality in process as the alternative to high inspection costs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1936, Vol. 15: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication; Table of Contents and Index Observations of field variations were made on radio signals at a number of different frequencies and over several paths. It was concluded that a characteristic sunset cycle of field variations is present on frequencies between 18 kc. And 68 kc. For transmission paths longer than 700 km. For paths less than 200 km. Long, such variations are negligible. There is some evidence that the amplitude of these field variations is smaller at lower frequencies. Analysis of the data presented indicates that long waves over long paths are transmitted predominately by sky waves. From the data it was not possible to establish any satisfactory picture of the path followed. It was established, however, that empirical methods based on observations over a particular transmission path may be employed to forecast the approximate time of occurrence of field variations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1929, Vol. 8: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication N 1923 the mile Of standard cable was replaced in the Bell System by a new unit for expressing telephone transmission efficiencies and levels. At that time the generic term transmission unit was taken to designate this new unit, since it was considered desirable to defer the adoption Of a more distinctive name until this unit had been given further consideration by others who would have use for a unit Of this type. This new unit is defined by the statement that two amounts Of power differ by one transmission unit when they are in the ratio of 10-1, and any two amounts Of power differ by N transmission units when they are in the ratio Of In accordance with this, the number Of transmission units corresponding to the ratio of any two powers is ten times the common logarithm Of that ratio. For a unit Of this kind, it is evidently desirable to have universal use. Accordingly, the Bell System, prior to its adoption Of the transmission unit, discussed this matter with various foreign telephone administrations, and suggested their consideration Of the use' Of the proposed transmission unit. A number of these administrations expressed a favorable attitude towards this unit. In 1924 there was organized the International Advisory Committee on Long Distance Telephony in Europe. The purpose of this commit tee, which is composed Of representatives of the various telephone administrations of Europe, is to recommend standards and practices for the development of telephone service between the European coun tries. One Oi the early considerations of this committee was this proposal Of the universal standardization of a unit for telephone trans mission work. This brought forth a difference Of view, since some Of the countries represented on this committee wished to continue their use of a unit based on naperian or natural logarithms, for which the basic power ratio is 62. The characteristics Of the unit based on decimal logarithms and that based on natural logarithms and their relative merits were discussed in a number. Of papers which were published at that time and so need not be rehearsed here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
