Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees Let us turn to the United States census figures for the year 1910. Here we shall see that bees are credited with' producing worth of honey and worth of wax in a single year. But it was possible for the census enumerators to get track of only about half the amount of the grand total. A conservative esti mate based ou reliable data shows that honeybees should be credited with not less than $2 worth of honey and beeswax. But as the average person can not comprehend what this means, suppose we load all this honey into 40-foot freight-cars holding pounds each. These cars, if placed end to end, would make a solid train over fifty miles long. So the little bee is not so little as it might at first seem. There are in the United States in the neighborhood of one mil lion persons who keep bees. There are perhaps one thousand whose annual crops run up into the carloads, and probably who make beekeeping a means of livelihood. To get the best out of human nature is impossible if we treat all people alike and to treat most people in the same way invariably would be fatal to happy progress. There is not only variety of people, but a continuous changing of moods in the same people. And all this can and should be applied to the populations of our apiaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bee-Master of Warrilow Luckily for English bee-keeping, there is a third class upon which the hopes of all who love the ancient ways and days, and yet recognise the absorbing interest and value of modern research in apiarian science, may legitimately rely. Born and bred amongst the hives, and steeped from their earliest years in the lore of their skeppist forefathers, these interesting folk seem, nevertheless, imbued to the core with the very spirit of progress. While retaining an unlimited affection for all the quaint old methods in bee keeping, they maintain themselves, unostentatiously, but very thoroughly, abreast of the times. Nothing new is talked of in the world of bees that these people do not make trial of, and quietly adopt into their daily practice, if really serviceable or as quietly discard, if the contrivance prove to have little else than novelty to recommend it. As a rule, they are reserved, silent men, difficult of approach; and yet, when once on terms of familiarity, they make the most charming of companions. Then they are ever ready to talk about their bees, or discuss the latest improvements in apiculture to explain the intrica cies of bee-life, as revealed by the foremost modern obser vers, or to dilate by the hour on the astounding delusions of mediaeval times. But they all seem to possess one invariable characteristic - that of whole-hearted reverence for the customs of their immediate ancestors, their own fathers and grandfathers. In a long acquaintance with bee-men of this class, I have never yet met with one who could be trapped into any decided admission of defect in the old methods, which - to say truth - were often as sense less as they were futile, even when not directly contrary to the interest of the bee-owner, or the plain, obvious dic tates of humanity. In this they form a refreshing con trast to the ultra-modern, pushing young apiculturist of to-day and it is as a type of this class that the Bee Master of Warrilow is presented to the reader. Download or read book Constructive Beekeeping (Classic Reprint) written by Ed H. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Beekeeping Familiarity with the bees makes a person wonder where the mule got his reputation for stubborness. We must, when we work with bees, follow where they lead if we want satisfactory results. They generally know what they want and fight to do it in their own way. The bee is an economical fellow. Efficiency is his last name. For ages before our time he has been working at the same task that he has brought to such perfection. The bees that have excited the amazement and wonder of the world as build ers of geometric comb, with all its economy and strength, the bees that make from the nectar of the flowers the honey, that is the superlative of all things sweet and good; have not stopped with these two achievements, but have maintained a marvel with in their home, which, when understood, will amaze us more than ever. The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mason-Bees This volume contains all the essays on the Chalicodomae, or Mason-bees proper, which so greatly enhance the interest of the early volumes of the Souvenirs ento -mologiques. I have also included an essay on the author's Cats and one on Red Ants - the only study of Ants comprised in the Souvenirs-both of which bear upon the sense of direction possessed by the Bees. Those treating of the Osmiae, who are also Mason-bees, although not usually known by that name, will be found in a separate volume, which I have called Bramble Bees and Others, and in which I have collected all that Fabre has written on such other Wild Bees as the Megachiles, or Leaf-cutters, the Cotton-bees, the Resin-bees, and the Halicti.
