Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1970s through the mid-1980s, the Chicago Outfit dominated organized crime in Las Vegas. To ensure the smooth flow of cash, the gangsters installed a front man with no criminal background, Allen R. Glick, as the casino owner of record, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal as the real boss of casino operations, and Tony Spilotro as the ultimate enforcer, who’d do whatever it took to protect their interests. It wasn’t long before Spilotro, also in charge of Vegas street crime, was known as the “King of the Strip.” Federal and local law enforcement, recognizing the need to rid the casinos of the mob and shut down Spilotro’s rackets, declared war on organized crime. The Battle for Las Vegas relates the story of the fight between the tough guys on both sides, told in large part by the agents and detectives who knew they had to win.

Book excerpt: On September 20, 1998, Jose Vigoa, a child of Fidel Castro’s revolution, launched what would be the most audacious and ruthless series of high-profile casino and armored car robberies that Las Vegas had ever seen. In a brazen sixteen-month reign of terror, he and his crew would hit the crème de la crème of Vegas hotels: the MGM, the Desert Inn, the New York—New York, the Mandalay Bay, and the Bellagio. The robberies were well planned and executed, and the police–“the stupids,” as Vigoa contemptuously referred to them–were all but helpless to stop them. But Lt. John Alamshaw, the twenty-three-year veteran in charge of robbery detectives, was not giving up so easily. For him, Vigoa’s rampage was a personal affront. And he would do whatever it took, even risk his badge, to bring Vigoa down.

Book excerpt: Las Vegas was the Mob's greatest venture and most spectacular success, and through 40 years of frenzy, murder, deceit, scams, and skimming, the FBI listened on phone taps and did virtually nothing to stop the fun. This is the truth about the Mob's control of the casinos in Vegas like you've never heard it before, from start to finish. Two of the nation's most powerful crime family bosses went to prison in the 1930's: Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. Frank Nitti took over the Chicago Outfit, while Frank Costello ran things for the Luciano Family. Both men were influenced by their bosses from prison, and both sent enough gangsters into the streets to influence loan sharking, extortion, union control, and drug sales. Bugsy Siegel worked for both groups, handling a string of murders and opening up gaming on the west coast, and that included Las Vegas, an oasis of sin in the middle of the desert - and it was legal. Most of it. The FBI watched as the Mob took control of casino after casino, killed off the competition, and stole enough money to bribe their way to respectability back home. By the 1950's, nearly every major crime family had a stake in a Las Vegas casino. Some did better than others. Casino owners watched-over their profits while competing crime families eyed each other's success like jealous lovers. Murder often followed.

Book excerpt: From burglary to armed robbery and murder, infamous bad guy Frank Cullotta not only did it all, in Cullotta he admits to it -- and in graphic detail. This no-holds-barred biography chronicles the life of a career criminal who started out as a thug on the streets of Chicago and became a trusted lieutenant in Tony Spilotro's gang of organised lawbreakers in Las Vegas. Cullotta's was a world of high-profile heists, street muscle, and information -- lots of it -- about many of the FBI's most wanted. In the end, that information was his ticket out of crime, as he turned government witness and became one of a handful of mob insiders to enter the Witness Protection Program.

Book excerpt: "The Las Vegas Chronicles" assembles the true stories of the city's most conniving mobsters and how they ran Sin City during its heyday. Pairing McLean's personal experience working in Las Vegas with his vivid investigative style of writing, this beautifully illustrated book gives you a unique look into the history of this extraordinary city. Uncover the Hollywood myth behind Bugsy Siegel and his wacko schemes for the Flamingo Hotel, and witness the real evolution of the fabulous Strip. In addition to exploring the annals of Mob activity in Vegas, you get a handy, fact-based Timeline of Special Events that took place in Las Vegas from 1829 to present day. Enjoy spell-binding sagas about the city's forefathers, today's casino operators and celebrity performers on the stages of Las Vegas showrooms-Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis, Siegfried & Roy, and Wayne Newton. REVIEW Vegas is where fortunes are created and fortunes are lost. "The Las Vegas Chronicles" tells the history of the people who made Las Vegas, and what has become of them over the centuries, from eccentrics who tossed millions at getting the city's legend gang, stories of gangsters, politics, and the modern atmosphere of keeping the games in favor of the Casino. With plenty of stories, "The Las Vegas Chronicles" is a choice collection for anyone who wants to understand the many twists and turns of Las Vegas's long history. -- "Midwest Book Review" "The Las Vegas Chronicles" by Andrew McLean is a truly remarkable read. After doing extensive research for my Las Vegas police and Mob books, I figured I knew most everything worth knowing about Sin City. At least that's what I thought until I read this book. In "The Las Vegas Chronicles" Mr. McLean accurately tells his readers the history of the city, who the key players were-both good and bad, the celebrities, the gaming, trivia, it's all there. I highly recommend this book to all readers. And if you're a history buff, a Las Vegas fan, or a bit of both, "The Las Vegas Chronicles" is a must read. -- Denny Griffin, author "Policing Las Vegas," "The Battle for Las Vegas," "CULLOTTA" "Although I lived and worked in Las Vegas, Andrew J. McLean's, The Las Vegas Chronicles is a highly educational and enjoyable read. It seems that with so many subjects, the facts are hard to come by. Factual history is really the core of civilization. We also tend to fictionalize so much of what is our history and Andrew McLean seems to have done his homework of what really happened and has now shared his findings with the rest of the world. The subject of Las Vegas has always captured the imagination and being that it's history is so unique, I couldn't put this book down. I witnessed much of what The Las Vegas Chronicles described although until now I never knew how or why so many events happened. The book is laid out in a very organized way so that the reader can fully see the transitions and metamorphous of Las Vegas in chronological order. I sometimes ask myself if I am going to miss something by not reading a particular book The historical information makes this book a great addition to one's library." -- Jay Rankin, author of "Under the Neon Sky...A Las Vegas Doorman's Story" "A wonderfully lucid and fascinating book of the Las Vegas scene during the mobster days and the transition to corporate ownership of the casinos. A fascinating book of stories, facts, and illustrations of one of the most interesting cities in the world. Andy's personality shows though in his fluid writing style. A most enjoyable must-read book." -- "BR" Bob L. Riley, Aerospace Engineer retired "Very enjoyable and interesting read. Anyone with a gambling/Vegas background will be interested in this book." -- Al Rainosek, Ph.D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the most brutal corporate restructuring in Wall Street history. The 2015 bankruptcy brawl for the storied casino giant, Caesars Entertainment, pitted brilliant and ruthless private equity legends against the world's most relentless hedge fund wizards. In the tradition of Barbarians at the Gate and The Big Short comes the riveting, multi-dimensional poker game between private equity firms and distressed debt hedge funds that played out from the Vegas Strip to Manhattan boardrooms to Chicago courthouses and even, for a moment, the halls of the United States Congress. On one side: Apollo Global Management and TPG Capital. On the other: the likes of Elliott Management, Oaktree Capital, and Appaloosa Management. The Caesars bankruptcy put a twist on the old-fashioned casino heist. Through a $27 billion leveraged buyout and a dizzying string of financial engineering transactions, Apollo and TPG—in the midst of the post-Great Recession slump—had seemingly snatched every prime asset of the company from creditors, with the notable exception of Caesars Palace. But Caesars’ hedge fund lenders and bondholders had scooped up the company’s paper for nickels and dimes. And with their own armies of lawyers and bankers, they were ready to do everything necessary to take back what they believed was theirs—if they could just stop their own infighting. These modern financiers now dominate the scene in Corporate America as their fight-to-the-death mentality continues to shock workers, politicians, and broader society—and even each other. In The Caesars Palace Coup, financial journalists Max Frumes and Sujeet Indap illuminate the brutal tactics of distressed debt mavens—vultures, as they are condemned—in the sale and purchase of even the biggest companies in the world with billions of dollars hanging in the balance.

Book excerpt: 2020 Foreword INDIE awards winner "Day-to-day life in immigrant communities is described with refreshing clarity and heart... an unusually accessible primer on immigration law and a valuable guide to the ways it currently works to perpetuate an excluded immigrant underclass with diminished rights." —The New York Review of Books The national debate over American immigration policy has obsessed politicians and disrupted the lives of millions of people for decades. The Battle to Stay in America focuses on Las Vegas, Nevada–a city where more than one in five residents was born in a foreign country, and where the community is struggling to defend itself against the federal government’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Told through the eyes of an immigration lawyer on the front lines of that battle, this book offers an accessible, intensely personal introduction to a broken legal system. It is also a raw, honest story of exhaustion, perseverance, and solidarity. Michael Kagan describes how current immigration law affects real people’s lives and introduces us to some remarkable individuals—immigrants and activists—who grapple with its complications every day. He explains how American immigration law often gives good people no recourse. He shows how under President Trump the complex bureaucracies that administer immigration law have been re-engineered to carry out a relentless but often invisible attack against people and families who are integral to American communities. Kagan tells the stories of people desperate to escape unspeakable violence in their homeland, children separated from their families and trapped in a tangle of administrative regulations, and hardworking long-time residents suddenly ripped from their productive lives when they fall unwittingly into the clutches of the immigration enforcement system. He considers how the crackdown on immigrants negatively impacts the national economy and offers a deeply considered assessment of the future of immigration policy in the United States. Kagan also captures the psychological costs exacted by fear of deportation and by increasingly overt expressions of hatred against immigrants.

Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1829, an 18-year-old Mexican scout for the Antonio Armijo Trading Caravan found a new trade route from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Los Angeles. In 1855, Brigham Young ordered 30 missionaries to Las Vegas Valley to teach the Paiutes farming techniques. The Paiutes rejected the Mormon’s offerings, and the fort was abandoned in 1858. #2 The first Strip casino, the El Rancho Vegas, opened in 1941. It was followed by the Flamingo in 1946, which was built by gangster Benjamin Siegel. Siegel had the looks of a Hollywood leading man and made frequent trips from New York to Los Angeles. #3 Siegel was unable to get funding for the Flamingo from his gangland friends, and he began to run out of his own estimated $1 million. He made numerous trips to the Midwest and East Coast in search of additional funding. #4 The Flamingo opened in Las Vegas on December 26, 1946, but it was a disaster. It lost money, and word of the losses made their way to Siegel. He became irate and threw out at least one family. He decided to wait for the hotel to be finished before reopenings.

Book excerpt: Las Vegas, 1970s—a golden age of Glitter Gulch corruption. Dennis Gomes--the youngest division chief in Gaming Control Board history--whipped a ragtag group of auditors into hardened, gun-slinging investigators, and shattered clichés about milquetoast accountant cops. Coming within a hair’s breadth of death more than once, Gomes capped off his tenure with the famous bust of the Stardust skim, portrayed in the book and movie Casino. In Hit Me!, there’s action to fill a dozen Scorsese films—midnight raids, heart-rending showgirl romances, and deadly double-crosses. And the cast of characters reads like a roll call of gangster lore. But no matter how much evidence Gomes uncovered, or how many witnesses and informants were bloodied, Gomes was swept aside by a political system that was dirty to its core. It took nearly three decades, but in 2007, Gomes made a date with destiny at The Family Secrets Trial--the justice system finally taking out a “hit” on the mob. In a Chicago courtroom on July 30, 2007, Gomes--a key prosecutorial witness--finally settled all scores. Dennis Gomes, who passed away in February 2012, will be posthumously inducted into the Gaming Hall of Fame in Las Vegas in October 2012.

Book excerpt: Napoleon began to count the people against his quest to obtain the only land-based gaming casino to be located in post- Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. The president of a major Las Vegas casino corporation, his chief rival for the project, and the city's political establishment were obviously against him. Recently, the retired City`s mob boss and his mafia daughter princess could be added to the list. Even his only living relative, his saintly grandmother, was turning her back on him. Tomorrow the local blue blood newspaper would write an article about him and the casino project. Not knowing what they would write, he figured he put them on the get Napoleon list. All in all, things seem to be going not as planned.New Orleans has a reputation as a city of loose morals, strip joints, and partying. But it lacks a large, Las Vegas-style casino to support and further mold that reputation. Things are about to change when the citizens of the Big Easy decide to legalize a land-based casino.
