Book excerpt: In a culture that tells men to suppress instead of express, join bestselling author, speaker, and leader Jason Wilson (featured in the award-winning ESPN documentary The Cave of Adullam) as he calls us to unlearn society's definition of masculinity and discover the power of engaging with our emotions. For decades, Jason was losing the war within--the internal battle that many men wage on a daily basis. He struggled to combat his toxic thoughts and emotions, communicating without composure, and ultimately hurting himself and his loved ones. When Jason began to release years of unresolved trauma, he learned how to acknowledge his emotions and express them in a healthy way. He discovered that he was strengthened by transparency and vulnerability, which taught him to forgive, trust, and love without limitations. Soon, Jason's newfound practices began to heal his relationships and transform his life. Throughout his journey of opening up, Jason became a better husband, father, and leader--and you can, too. Supported by Biblical teachings, the lessons that Jason shares in Battle Cry teach us that we can all be empowered to break through what we've been through. Jason calls us to become better versions of ourselves, equipping us with the mental and spiritual weapons needed to redefine modern masculinity and showing us how to: embrace our emotions rather than be ruled by them win internal battles before they become external wars break free from misconstrued masculinity and embrace our humanity communicate more effectively with the people in our lives heal trauma from our past in order to live our fullest lives in the present Battle Cry proves that it's possible to live beyond the limitations of your mind and finally experience the full life you've always longed for. What are you waiting for? It's time to win the war within.

Book excerpt: Battle Cry is the riveting Marine epic by the bestselling author of such classics as Trinity and Exodus. Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris's Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author. This is the story of enlisted men – Marines – at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough–and–ready tangle of guys from America's cities and farms and reservations. Led by a tough veteran sergeant, these soldiers band together to emerge as part of one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. With staggering realism and detail, we follow them into intense battles – Guadalcanal and Tarawa – and through exceptional moments of camaraderie and bravery. Battle Cry does not extol the glories of war, but proves itself to be one of the greatest war stories of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with fresh interpretations and information, puncturing old myths and challenging new ones, Battle Cry of Freedom will unquestionably become the standard one-volume history of the Civil War. James McPherson's fast-paced narrative fully integrates the political, social, and military events that crowded the two decades from the outbreak of one war in Mexico to the ending of another at Appomattox. Packed with drama and analytical insight, the book vividly recounts the momentous episodes that preceded the Civil War--the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry--and then moves into a masterful chronicle of the war itself--the battles, the strategic maneuvering on both sides, the politics, and the personalities. Particularly notable are McPherson's new views on such matters as the slavery expansion issue in the 1850s, the origins of the Republican Party, the causes of secession, internal dissent and anti-war opposition in the North and the South, and the reasons for the Union's victory. The book's title refers to the sentiments that informed both the Northern and Southern views of the conflict: the South seceded in the name of that freedom of self-determination and self-government for which their fathers had fought in 1776, while the North stood fast in defense of the Union founded by those fathers as the bulwark of American liberty. Eventually, the North had to grapple with the underlying cause of the war--slavery--and adopt a policy of emancipation as a second war aim. This "new birth of freedom," as Lincoln called it, constitutes the proudest legacy of America's bloodiest conflict. This authoritative volume makes sense of that vast and confusing "second American Revolution" we call the Civil War, a war that transformed a nation and expanded our heritage of liberty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B is for Battle Cry: A Civil War Alphabet takes readers on a journey into one of the most important chapters of our nation's past. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest, most divisive events to take place in America's history, and most certainly ever on American soil. For four years our young country's sense of self and citizenry was shaken to the core as North and South battled each other. B is for Battle Cry brings to life historic battles (Antietam and Gettysburg), renowned leaders (Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee), inventions (ironclad ship and Gatling gun), and inspiring events and documents (the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation). From the first shot fired at Fort Sumter to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, B is for Battle Cry brings this nation-defining time period to vivid life.Patricia Bauer believes that stories bring history alive. She uses poetry, music, picture books, costumes, and literature to engage her middle school students in the study of American history. B is for Battle Cry is Pat's first children's book. She lives in Minneapolis with her artist husband, David Geister. David Geister's deep appreciation for the drama of American history and the desire to tell those stories is what inspires his artwork. He is a popular visitor at schools with his costumed portrayals of historic characters. He lives in Minneapolis with his author wife, Patricia Bauer. This is David's fifth book with Sleeping Bear.

Book excerpt: Battle cry (noun): a loud shout given by soldiers to frighten the enemy or to encourage their own side. We all have a story to tell. Our life stories, the real and the messy ones, are God’s battle cry. They are meant to encourage one another and to push back the enemy—but they must be shared to do that. In Battle Cry, author Jordyn Glaser shares her story, her personal battle cry. Filled with both trials and tribulations, she chronicles her journey to discovering the beauty of her brokenness. Through her experiences of being born with a complicated heart condition, having children with rare birth defects, and the emotional roller coaster of multiple adoptions, Glaser acknowledges the strength of Christ and the value of being refined in the fire. Glaser uses her own story as a tool to rally the troops. She encourages all to stop living small and to fight big. In Battle Cry, she delivers the message that we weren’t created to be the hero of our own stories—we were created to be the rescued.

Book excerpt: As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Book excerpt: Why are most slogans and taglines ineffective? Because they're just words and a mind cannot understand words. A mind can only understand sounds. Why do most Americans remember the battlecry of the French Revolution (Libert , galit , fraternit ) when they cannot remember the battlecry of the American Revolution? Because the sounds of the words "Libert , galit , fraternit " rhyme and that's one of the powerful techniques for creating a memorable slogan. In addition to "rhyme," there are four other techniques outlined in my new book, Battlecry. (1) Rhyme: "Roto-Rooter, that's the name. And away go troubles down the drain." (2) Alliteration: "M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hands." (3) Repetition: "The few. The proud. The Marines." (4) Reversals: "Two great tastes that taste great together. Reese's peanut butter cups." (5) Double-entendre: "A diamond is forever." You might think companies and their ad agencies would be wise to these techniques. But few slogans actually use any of these memory-building tactics. In a recent survey of 266 advertising slogans, only 19 used any one of them. Battlecry is a companion book to my previous book, Visual Hammer, and should be read together. Creating a slogan is only half the battle. The other half of the battle is a visual that will help drive your slogan into prospects' minds. The contour bottle helps drive "The real thing" into the minds of cola drinkers. The duck helps drive the Aflac name into prospects' minds. The straw-in-the-orange helps drive "Not from concentrate" into the minds of Tropicana buyers. Even "The ultimate driving machine" would not have been effective, in my opinion, without a visual hammer. And what was BMW's visual hammer? It was the television commercials showing BMWs being driven over winding road by happy owners. Over the years, there have been many advertising campaigns showing beautiful automobiles being driven over lush, winding roads. The hammers are terrific, but the nails are missing. The trick is to find the right combination of a visual hammer and a verbal nail. And my two books, Battlecry and Visual Hammer, can help you do exactly that.
