Book Synopsis The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts by : Baba Ifa Karade
Download or read book The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts written by Baba Ifa Karade and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the spiritual source of the beliefs and practices that have so profoundly shaped African American religious traditions. Most of the Africans who were enslaved and brought to the Americas were from the Yoruba nation of West Africa, an ancient and vast civilization. In the diaspora caused by the slave trade, the guiding concepts of the Yoruba spiritual tradition took root in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States. In this accessible introduction, Baba Ifa Karade provides an overview of the Yoruba tradition and its influence in the West. He describes the sixteen Orisha, or spirit gods, and shows us how to work with divination, use the energy centers of the body to internalize the teachings of Yoruba, and create a sacred place of worship. The book also includes prayers, dances, songs, offerings, and sacrifices to honor the Orisha.

Book Synopsis Singing Yoruba Christianity by : Vicki L. Brennan
Download or read book Singing Yoruba Christianity written by Vicki L. Brennan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing the same song is a central part of the worship practice for members for the Cherubim and Seraphim Christian Church in Lagos, Nigeria. Vicki L. Brennan reveals that by singing together, church members create one spiritual mind and become unified around a shared set of values. She follows parishioners as they attend choir rehearsals, use musical media—hymn books and cassette tapes—and perform the music and rituals that connect them through religious experience. Brennan asserts that church members believe that singing together makes them part of a larger imagined social collective, one that allows them to achieve health, joy, happiness, wealth, and success in an ethical way. Brennan discovers how this particular Yoruba church articulates and embodies the moral attitudes necessary to be a good Christian in Nigeria today.

Book Synopsis The Yoruba God of Drumming by : Amanda Villepastour
Download or read book The Yoruba God of Drumming written by Amanda Villepastour and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the salient forces in the ritual life of those who worship the pre-Christian and Muslim deities called orishas, the Yorùbá god of drumming, known as Àyàn in Africa and Añá in Cuba, is variously described as the orisha of drumming, the spirit of the wood, or the more obscure Yorùbá praise name AsòròIgi (Wood That Talks). With the growing global importance of orisha religion and music, the consequence of this deity's power for devotees continually reveals itself in new constellations of meaning as a sacred drum of Nigeria and Cuba finds new diasporas. Despite the growing volume of literature about the orishas, surprisingly little has been published about the ubiquitous Yorùbá music spirit. Yet wherever one hears drumming for the orishas, Àyàn or Añá is nearby. This groundbreaking collection addresses the gap in the research with contributions from a cross-section of prestigious musicians, scholars, and priests from Nigeria, the Americas, and Europe who have dedicated themselves to studying Yorùbá sacred drums and the god sealed within. As well as offering multidisciplinary scholarly insights from transatlantic researchers, the volume includes compelling first-hand accounts from drummer-priests who were themselves history-makers in Nigerian and Cuban diasporas in the United States, Venezuela, and Brazil. This collaboration between diverse scholars and practitioners constitutes an innovative approach, where differing registers of knowledge converge to portray the many faces and voices of a single god.

Book excerpt: The Yoruba have a wide range of social and political structures, but they share several common characteristics. Members of the patrilineage live together under a headman's jurisdiction, share certain names and taboos, worship their deity, and access lineage lands based on patrilineal descent. The egbe, a male recreational association; the aro, a farmer's mutual-aid association; and the esusu, whose members pay a fixed sum of money and may obtain loans, are among the Yoruba's voluntary associations. The oba and a council of chiefs have political power; constituent towns each have their ruler subordinate to the oba. The oba is also a ceremonial chief who is revered. West Africa is home to the Yoruba people. It ranges from the north to the south, from a savanna (grassland) area to tropical rain forests. The majority of Yoruba people live in Nigeria. However, Benin and Togo, both small countries to the west of Nigeria, have a few dispersed communities. Book Synopsis Divining the Self by : Velma E. Love
Download or read book Divining the Self written by Velma E. Love and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divining the Self weaves elements of personal narrative, myth, history, and interpretive analysis into a vibrant tapestry that reflects the textured, embodied, and performative nature of scripture and scripturalizing practices. Velma Love examines the Odu—the Yoruba sacred scriptures—along with the accompanying mythology, philosophy, and ritual technologies engaged by African Americans. Drawing from the personal narratives of African American Ifa practitioners along with additional ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Oyotunji African Village, South Carolina, and New York City, Love’s work explores the ways in which an ancient worldview survives in modern times. Divining the Self also takes up the challenge of determining what it means for the scholar of religion to study scripture as both text and performance. This work provides an excellent case study of the sociocultural phenomenon of scripturalizing practices.
