Download or read book Learning to Love written by Raksha Pande and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to Love moves beyond the media and policy stereotypes that conflate arranged marriages with forced marriages. Using in-depth interviews and participant observations, this book assembles a rich and diverse array of everyday marriage narratives and trajectories and highlights how considerations of romantic love are woven into traditional arranged marriage practices. It shows that far from being a homogeneous tradition, arranged marriages involve a variety of different matchmaking practices where each family tailors its own cut-and-paste version of British-Indian arranged marriages to suit modern identities and ambitions. Pande argues that instead of being wedded to traditions, people in the British-Indian diaspora have skillfully adapted and negotiated arranged marriage cultural norms to carve out an identity narrative that portrays them as "modern and progressive migrants"–ones who are changing with the times and cultivating transnational forms of belonging.

Download or read book Arranged Marriage written by Péter Berta and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arranged Marriage: The Politics of Tradition, Resistance, and Change shows how arranged marriage practices have been undergoing transformation as a result of global and other processes such as the revolution of digital technology, democratization of transnational mobility, or shifting significance of patriarchal power structures. The ethnographically informed chapters not only highlight how the gendered and intergenerational politics of agency, autonomy, choice, consent, and intimacy work in the contexts of partner choice and management of marriage, but also point out that arranged marriages are increasingly varied and they can be reshaped, reinvented, and reinterpreted flexibly in response to individual, family, religious, class, ethnic, and other desires, needs, and constraints. The authors convincingly demonstrate that a nuanced investigation of the reasons, complex dynamics, and consequences of arranged marriages offers a refreshing analytical lens that can significantly contribute to a deeper understanding of other phenomena such as globalization, modernization, and international migration as well as patriarchal value regimes, intergenerational power imbalances, and gendered subordination and vulnerability of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arjan Banga is forced to leave London to help his lonely mother run Bains Stores, their family’s provincial corner shop. But, it’s also a return to all that he tried to leave behind: narrow worldviews and post-industrial decline—and Singhfellows, a desi pub that defines itself by a religion that officially rejects drinking. But, his mother is adamant to keep the store open, forcing Arjan to work with her, reassess his relationship with his gori fiancé and discover his family’s silent history: his aunt’s elopement, his mother’s marriage to a lower-caste man, and his family’s strange relationship with their desi neighbours, the Dhandas, whose macho heir can’t stop listening to Malkit Singh and declaring: ‘Am just gonna bun dis spliff.’ The story of modern Britain as seen through the windows of an English shop with a big Punjabi heart, Marriage Material is the humorous chronicle of finding love as a desi in England—and of English desis forging and celebrating a betwixt identity that is neither here nor there.

Book excerpt: This book titled “Trends in Language Teaching, Literature, Cultural Studies, and Linguistics” embarks on a journey that transcends borders, delves into the intricacies of language, and celebrates the rich tapestry of human expression. Language is more than mere communication; it’s a mirror reflecting our collective identity, aspirations, and cultural heritage. As educators, scholars, and language enthusiasts, we recognize that our field is ever-evolving. New methodologies emerge, literary landscapes shift, and cultural contexts shape our understanding of words and their power. In this book, we explore four interconnected domains: Language Teaching: How do we inspire language learners? What innovative pedagogies foster fluency and cultural competence? Our contributors share practical insights and theoretical frameworks. Literature: From timeless classics to contemporary voices, literature invites us to explore the human condition. We discuss trends, genres, and the transformative impact of storytelling. Cultural Studies: Culture is the heartbeat of language. We delve into cultural nuances, intercultural communication, and the ways in which literature reflects societal shifts. Linguistics: The science behind language—its structure, evolution, and sociolinguistic dimensions— fuels our curiosity. Linguists unravel mysteries, and we follow their trail. Within these chapters, you’ll encounter passionate educators and rigorous researchers. Their voices harmonize, creating a symphony of ideas. We celebrate diversity—of languages, perspectives, and methodologies. Together, let’s navigate the currents of change, guided by empathy, curiosity, and a shared love for language. Thank you for joining us on this odyssey.
