Book Synopsis Women in Frankish Society by : Suzanne Fonay Wemple
Download or read book Women in Frankish Society written by Suzanne Fonay Wemple and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Frankish Society is a careful and thorough study of women and their roles in the Merovingian and Carolingian periods of the Middle Ages. During the 5th through 9th centuries, Frankish society transformed from a relatively primitive tribal structure to a more complex hierarchical organization. Suzanne Fonay Wemple sets out to understand the forces at work in expanding and limiting women's sphere of activity and influence during this time. Her goal is to explain the gap between the ideals and laws on one hand and the social reality on the other. What effect did the administrative structures and social stratification in Merovingian society have on equality between the sexes? Did the emergence of the nuclear family and enforcement of monogamy in the Carolingian era enhance or erode the power and status of women? Wemple examines a wealth of primary sources, such deeds, testaments, formulae, genealogy, ecclesiastical and secular court records, letters, treatises, and poems in order to reveal the enduring German, Roman, and Christian cultural legacies in the Carolingian Empire. She attends to women in secular life and matters of law, economy, marriage, and inheritance, as well as chronicling the changes to women's experiences in religious life, from the waning influence of women in the Frankish church to the rise of female asceticism and monasticism.

Book excerpt: I was known as Fenrir the Destroyer, the taker of lives and castles, a brutal Viking warrior in the Kingdom of Kaldir. My kingdom. My name traveled far and wide, and those who heard it knew their place... accepted their fear above all else.I had riches beyond measure, my followers countless and loyal. But I was missing the most crucial part of my reign, of my ruling.A wife. My queen. A mother to my warrior sons and princess daughters. But there's only one female who tempted my eye and made me yearn for more. And for years I coveted her and her alone, waited until I could provide for her without fail.My Prima. She'd once been a young sapling barely reaching my thighs, but she'd grown into a mature woman full of curves that made me ache. She was the female I knew would make my filthiest fantasies come true.Prima was so small, tiny compared to me, and every protective instinct I had rose up with a vengeance strong enough to level anything in its path. I'd always protect her without fail. She was mine, no matter what. And when timid, inexperienced Prima was finally brought to me-my conquest after years of being alone-I was a selfish bastard and wouldn't deny myself from claiming her.In the end, she'd surrender. Because beneath her uncertainty and innocence was a wildfire I was ready to let burn me alive.

Book Synopsis Approaches to the Byzantine Family by : Dr Shaun Tougher
Download or read book Approaches to the Byzantine Family written by Dr Shaun Tougher and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the family is one of the major lacunas in Byzantine Studies. Angeliki Laiou remarked in 1989 that ‘the study of the Byzantine family is still in its infancy’, and this assertion remains true today. The present volume addresses this lacuna. It comprises 19 chapters written by international experts in the field which take a variety of approaches to the study of the Byzantine family, and embrace a chronological span from the later Roman to the late Byzantine empire. The context is established by chapters focusing on the Roman roots of the Byzantine family, the Christianisation of the family, and the nature of the family in contemporaneous cultures (the late antique west and the Islamic east). Key methodological approaches to the Byzantine family are highlighted and discussed, in particular prosopographical and life course approaches. The contribution of hagiography to the understanding of the Byzantine family is analysed by several authors; other chapters on the family and children in art and on the archaeology of the Middle Byzantine house explore the material evidence that can shed light on the Byzantine family. Overall, the diversity of families that existed in Byzantium (blood, fictive, metaphorical) is emphasised, and chapters consider the specific cases of ascetic, monastic, aristocratic and peasant families, as well as the imperial family, which is illuminated by the comparative case of a Caliphal family. The volume is topped and tailed by a Preface and an Afterword by the editors, which address the state of the field and consider the way ahead. Thus the volume is vital in putting the subject of the Byzantine Family in sharp focus and setting the research agenda for the future.
