Book Synopsis Security Community Practices in the Western Balkans by : Sonja Stojanović Gajić
Download or read book Security Community Practices in the Western Balkans written by Sonja Stojanović Gajić and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, the Western Balkans were the scene of prolonged and bloody inter-ethnic wars. Numerous issues remain unresolved; Bosnia is a dysfunctional state; Kosovo a disputed territory; Macedonia a fragile republic, however, it is hard now to imagine the renewal of inter-state armed conflict. Investigating the causes and mechanisms driving peaceful transformation in the Balkans, this book examines developments in the region and contributes to discussions on security community building. Focusing on how different professional communities work together in the creation of regional peace and security, it sheds new light on how diplomats, policemen, soldiers and others brought about the transformation from conflict to peace through their everyday practices. Conducted collaboratively by a research community based within the region, this volume will be highly relevant to scholars and researchers studying the Balkans, regional security, security communities and policymakers.
Book Synopsis The Balkans as a Security Region by : Vihren Ianakiev Bouzov
Download or read book The Balkans as a Security Region written by Vihren Ianakiev Bouzov and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents some arguments for consideration of the Balkans as a separate region of security for the last two decades. From the point of view of the regional security complex theory, the paper analyzes the results of the “super-powers” policies, ethnic conflicts and wars in our region. There are some reasons to conclude that the Balkan countries feel unwelcome in the EU through the faults and expansive domination of the leading countries in this organization, which gives them the role of a “cordon sanitaire” against refugee flows and staging ground for confrontation with Russia. The paper critically analyzes the state of the regional relations and the confrontation of the “super-powers” (USA, Russia, the EU) and regional powers as Turkey around the realization of some key energy projects on the Balkans and in the Middle East. The new role of Turkey as a regional leader with a decisive role in regional crises in the Middle East and on the Balkans and as an energy center in the future is also an important argument in favour of the thesis of formation of the Balkans as a separate security region. Some regional and global challenges are critically considered, such as the refugee flows, wars and confrontation in the Middle East, ethnic and national conflicts in our region. A conclusion is drawn up that the transformation of the EU in the XXI century and the ability of our countries to unite around common interests determine the prospects of achieving a lasting peace and conditions for economic recovery and development on the Balkans.

Book Synopsis The Balkans: Old, New Instabilities by : Giorgio Fruscione
Download or read book The Balkans: Old, New Instabilities written by Giorgio Fruscione and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 could be a crucial year for the Western Balkans. For over twenty years, the region has been stuck in a never-ending transition. Politics, economics, and geopolitics are still falling prey to old and new sources of instability. With the path towards EU integration still uncertain, many governments in the region are marked by autocratic tendencies, and international actors strive for a bigger say in the region. NATO is expanding to the Balkans, but regional security still depends on foreign soft power and influence. And while recipes for economic transition focus mainly on foreign direct investments that often lack transparency, Balkan societies are losing their citizens to substantial emigration. What are the factors contributing to Western Balkans instability in the age of Covid-19? Will the region continue to be ground for renewed geopolitical competition? How can the Balkans leave the transition phase and find a sustainable, balanced path onwards?
Download or read book Regions and Powers written by Barry Buzan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the idea that since decolonisation, regional patterns of security have become more prominent in international politics. The authors combine an operational theory of regional security with an empirical application across the whole of the international system. Individual chapters cover Africa, the Balkans, CIS Europe, East Asia, EU Europe, the Middle East, North America, South America, and South Asia. The main focus is on the post-Cold War period, but the history of each regional security complex is traced back to its beginnings. By relating the regional dynamics of security to current debates about the global power structure, the authors unfold a distinctive interpretation of post-Cold War international security, avoiding both the extreme oversimplifications of the unipolar view, and the extreme deterritorialisations of many globalist visions of a new world disorder. Their framework brings out the radical diversity of security dynamics in different parts of the world.

Book Synopsis Border Security in the Balkans by : Alice Hills
Download or read book Border Security in the Balkans written by Alice Hills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders dominate the security agenda in South-east Europe. Political and ethnic discontents focus on disputed borders, while traffickers in migrants and drugs ignore them. The EU argues that the Balkan countries should develop models of border management using its policing standards, but the region is rife with corruption and its border guards are both under-resourced and ineffective. This Paper asks how and why border management in South-east Europe is developing as it is, and what this might mean for the future of Europe. Drawing on recent experience in Bosnia, Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia and Albania, it looks at the ways in which the regions' borders are managed, and gauges the development of a consensual European approach to border security. It shows how governments and guards understand the predicament of regional insecurity, and how they respond with strategies that accommodate, evade or subvert unavoidable political pressures.
Book Synopsis Balkan Imbroglio by : Daniel N Nelson
Download or read book Balkan Imbroglio written by Daniel N Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Europe underwent extraordinary changes in 1989-1990, the continent's south-eastern region - the Balkans - began once again to draw attention for its ethnic rivalries, its political turmoil and its interstate disputes. Continuing tensions and instability have fostered images of a Balkan imbroglio where regional instability could affect all of Europe. This study offers country-specific and comparative assessments of political trends during this transitional era, placing emphasis on matters of international security, socioeconomic policy and political leadership. Also considered are the requisite conditions for democracy in the role of the military in a civil society, and the manner in which security can be achieved without overarching, hegemonic alliances.
Book Synopsis Cultural Identity and Regional Security in the Western Balkans by : Marko Marjanovic
Download or read book Cultural Identity and Regional Security in the Western Balkans written by Marko Marjanovic and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The research problem of this thesis is to find the critical relation or connection between the cultural identity and regional security in the Western Balkans. Is cultural identity critically important for regional security in the Western Balkans? is the central research question of this thesis. The thesis uses a qualitative descriptive research approach, and the main method is case study of the Western Balkans. This thesis utilizes the analytical frameworks of securitization, regional security complex and security sectors to interpret its findings. Findings of this research showed that cultural identity did not influence crucible historical events in the region, and that rather it was the opposite--the crucible historical events changed the cultural map of the Western Balkans. Findings also point out that the current process of security reforms did not advance. In conclusion this thesis disregards the common assumption of ancient hatreds and clashes of civilizations and puts the blame for recent conflicts in the Western Balkans on political elites that manipulated the population and the international community that favored right of self-determination instead of territorial integrity. This thesis offers recommendations for action that will foster regional security based upon the new regional identity"--Abstract.
Book Synopsis The Balkans at the Turn of Century by : Adamantios Milas
Download or read book The Balkans at the Turn of Century written by Adamantios Milas and published by . This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes that occurred in the Balkans since 1991, following Soviet Union's dissolution and the breakup of Yugoslavia, revived the violent history of the Balkan Peninsula. The Kosovo war in 1998 aggravated the situation and increased fears among countries in the region for more ethnic strife, military operations and a massive exodus of refugees. As a Balkan country, Greece was affected by the evolving situation, which was reflected in its foreign security policy towards its northern neighbors during the 199Os. Greece has to redefine its role in the area and make use of its membership in both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union (EU) to facilitate stability in the Balkans and solve its security dilemmas with its northern neighbors. Security concerns reflect both the defense and economic aspect international relations. Political and economic stability are the primary goals of the Balkan states. These states cannot solve their problems without external help from Western European countries and European Security institutions, like the EU, NATO and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Inevitably the European security institutions' engagement in the Balkans raises questions of enlargement in the Balkans. However, enlargement for both EU and NATO involves more than simply accepting new members.

Book Synopsis Human Trafficking, Human Security, and the Balkans by : H. Richard Friman
Download or read book Human Trafficking, Human Security, and the Balkans written by H. Richard Friman and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of four Yugoslav wars, ongoing efforts at reconstruction in South Eastern Europe have devoted relatively limited attention to dimensions of human security that enhance protections for the region's most vulnerable populations in their daily lives. It is in this context that South Eastern Europe, and especially the Western Balkan region, has emerged as a nexus point in human trafficking.Human Trafficking, Human Security, and the Balkans brings together leading scholars, NGO representatives, and government officials to analyze and offer solutions to this challenge. The contributors explore the economic dynamics of human trafficking in an era of globalization, which has greatly facilitated not only the flow of goods and services but also the trade in human beings. They also examine the effectiveness of international and transnational policies and practice, the impact of peacekeeping forces, and the emergence of national and regional action plans in the Western Balkans and, more broadly, in South Eastern Europe. Finally, they consider the nature and ramifications of the gap between human security rhetoric and institutional policy steps against human trafficking.
