Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: November 1st 2018 is one of those days that stays with you for the rest of your life. You see that was the day I found a small lump in my left breast, you never forget that moment as inside I was filled with dread, fear and worry of what the future held. I had seen several family members in the past few months being diagnosed with that dreaded disease, breast cancer. This find was made even more traumatic as the next day I was attending a dinner at St George's Hall, Liverpool, an iconic ceremonial building known throughout the world and the first building visitors see as they exit Lime street station. It's so iconic that it has been used as a backdrop for film locations for numerous worldwide movies in recent years. I was attending this dinner as I had been nominated for two awards. One was for Employee of the year, a massive honour and the other was for Innovator of the year. These are two extremely prestigious awards within my place of work, Aintree University Hospital. Wow I can hear you say, well so did I. I'm not apologising as I was absolutely over the moon for reasons I will go into later in my story.

Book Synopsis Everyone Brave is Forgiven by : Chris Cleave
Download or read book Everyone Brave is Forgiven written by Chris Cleave and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller from Chris Cleave—the unforgettable novel about three lives entangled during World War II, told “with dazzling prose, sharp English wit, and compassion…a powerful portrait of war’s effects on those who fight and those left behind” (People, Book of the Week). London, 1939. The day war is declared, Mary North leaves finishing school unfinished, goes straight to the War Office, and signs up. Tom Shaw decides to ignore the war—until he learns his roommate Alistair Heath has unexpectedly enlisted. Then the conflict can no longer be avoided. Young, bright, and brave, Mary is certain she’d be a marvelous spy. When she is—bewilderingly—made a teacher, she finds herself defying prejudice to protect the children her country would rather forget. Tom, meanwhile, finds that he will do anything for Mary. And when Mary and Alistair meet, it is love, as well as war, that will test them in ways they could not have imagined, entangling three lives in violence and passion, friendship, and deception, inexorably shaping their hopes and dreams. The three are drawn into a tragic love triangle and—as war escalates and bombs begin falling—further into a grim world of survival and desperation. Set in London during the years of 1939–1942, when citizens had slim hope of survival, much less victory; and on the strategic island of Malta, which was daily devastated by the Axis barrage, Everyone Brave is Forgiven features little-known history and a perfect wartime love story inspired by the real-life love letters between Chris Cleave’s grandparents. This dazzling novel dares us to understand that, against the great theater of world events, it is the intimate losses, the small battles, the daily human triumphs that change us most.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling collection of essays on the power of ordinary people to effect lasting change—from the host and cofounder of Democracy Now! Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan began writing a weekly column, “Breaking the Sound Barrier,” for King Features Syndicate in 2006. This timely new sequel to Goodman’s New York Times bestseller of the same name gives voice to the many ordinary people standing up to corporate and government power—and refusing to be silent. The Silenced Majority pulls back the veil of corporate media reporting to dig deep into the politics of “climate apartheid,” the implications of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the movement to halt the execution of Troy Anthony Davis, and the globalization of dissent “from Tahrir Square to Liberty Plaza.” Throughout, Goodman and Moynihan show the work of ordinary people to change their media—and change the world. She does it every day.” —Susan Sarandon, activist and actress “Crusading journalism at its best.” —Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post “A towering progressive freedom fighter in the media and the world.” —Cornel West, author of Race Matters “What journalism should be: beholden to the interests of people, not power and profit.” —Arundhati Roy, author of The End of Imagination

Born and raised in a small Oregon town, all-American girl Rebecca Bender was a varsity athlete and honor roll student with a promising future. Then a predator pretending to be her boyfriend lured her into a web of lies that sent her down a path she never imagined possible. For nearly six years, Rebecca was sold across the underground world of sex trafficking in Las Vegas. She was branded, beaten, told when to sleep and what to wear, and traded between traffickers. Forced into a dark sisterhood, Rebecca formed bonds with her trafficker and three other women, creating a false sense of family. During that time, God began revealing himself to her. And in the midst of her exploitation, she found the hope she needed to survive. After a federal raid, Rebecca escaped. Her life was forever changed as she felt the embrace of her heavenly Father guiding her to healing and wholeness. Rebecca soon began to use her own experiences to change the lives of others as she went back into the darkest places she had known--assisting FBI, VICE, and law enforcement across the country in some of their most difficult cases. Through Rebecca's incredible story of redemption, we remember that our past does not have to determine our destiny.

Book excerpt: A gripping psychological thriller debut by award-winning Finnish author Pekka Hiltunen—skillfully paced, intense, and intelligent When Lia witnesses a disturbing scene on her way to work, she, like the rest of the city of London, is captivated and horrified. As details unfurl in the media, the brutal truth emerges—a Latvian prostitute has been killed, her body run over by a steamroller and then placed in the trunk of a car to be found. As the weeks pass and no leads are found, the news story dies, but Lia finds herself unable to forget. When she meets Mari, another Finn living in London, she thinks it fortuitous, but Mari has engineered the meeting for her own advantage. There is much more to Mari than meets the eye: she possesses an unnatural ability to "read" people, to see into their innermost thoughts and preempt their actions. Mari heads up a unit she calls the "Studio"—a group she employs made up of four disparate people: a hacker, a set designer, a private detective, and an actress. They are loyal to Mari, and she has bound them to her by granting them life-changing favors. When Lia shares the thoughts plaguing her about the murder, Mari thinks she and the members of the Studio can help where the police have failed. But Mari and Lia are about to set foot into extremely dangerous territory, especially as Mari is not above using the Studio to unscrupulous ends.
