Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978 Spirit Possession and Spirit Mediumship in Africa and Afro-America is an incredibly diverse and comprehensive bibliography on published works containing ethnographic data on, and analysis of, spirit possession and spirit mediumship in North and Sub-Saharan Africa and in some Afro-American communities in the Western Hemisphere. The sources on Western Afro-American communities were chosen to shed light on the African continent and the Americas. The bibliography also provides unique sources on spirit cults, ritual or ethnic groups and will be of especial interest to researchers. Although published in the late 70s, this book will still provide an incredibly useful research tool for academics in the area of religion, with a focus on spiritualism and non-western religions.

Book Synopsis The Making of Modern Uganda by : Kenneth Ingham
Download or read book The Making of Modern Uganda written by Kenneth Ingham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1958, The Making of Modern Uganda is concerned with the formation of modern Uganda in the sixty years since the 1890s when the foundations of the British administration were laid. In the first decade of the 20th century Sir Hesketh Bell, Uganda’s Governor, decided that Uganda should be built up by Africans under the disinterested guidance of Europeans. The book therefore traces the emergence of a territory whose material prosperity is mainly based upon peasant agriculture guided by the advice of British agricultural officers. It describes the development from an era of tribal, clan and even village organisation to the system of centralised government along semi-parliamentary lines but notes the disagreement as to whether Uganda’s future should lie as a unitary or a federal state. The controversial issue of closer union with the other East African territories is studied at some length as also is the growth of the politically active minority which plays so important a part in the modern Protectorate. The author believes that the years of ‘happy Uganda’, the years before the Second World War, were a period in which hard work coupled with peace and obvious progress tended to conceal for many the growth of new forces which needed an outlet and only found one in the political and constitutional developments of the post-war age. This book will be of interest to students of history, African studies, ethnic studies and political science.

Book Synopsis Histories of Religious Thought and Practice in Africa by : PROFESSOR LOUIS. BRENNER
Download or read book Histories of Religious Thought and Practice in Africa written by PROFESSOR LOUIS. BRENNER and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-12-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a richly detailed comparative analysis of endogenous, Muslim, and Christian religious thought and practice in sub-Saharan Africa. Organized thematically, the book presents a conceptual and analytical framework for the study of religious traditions as complex and constantly evolving social phenomena. The most salient theme in the book is how different religious traditions defined and provided for the personal and communal wellbeing of their adherents. Other major themes explore how religious traditions have influenced one another, how religious practitioners conceptualized and interacted with spiritual entities, how religious knowledge and expertise were acquired and transmitted, how rituals were organized and structured in order to achieve their aims, and how rituals affected those who performed them. Additional topics analysed include the personalization of relationships with spiritual entities, the gendering of religious thought and practice, how personal transformative rituals were conceptualized and enacted with reference to stages of the life cycle, such as birth, marriage and death, and how suffering was seen as integral to the process of personal transformation. Overall, the book engages with issues that continue to animate the study of religious thought and practice in Africa and African studies more generally.
