I have very rarely seen anything like that done, and I have given the views of such authorities as Lord Walsingham, Mr. John Scott-Montagu, M.P., and Mr. A. J. Stuart-Wortley, amongst others. One of my contributors, Mr. G. Christopher Davies, writes to me: 'A discussion as to the proportion of cartridges to kills is as vain as the question which is the best nitro. There is, however, a point which is surely capable of decision, and that is, the comparative value of the short two-inch cartridges, with a small charge of concentrated powder, which, under the name of 'Pigmies, ' are sold by one of the leading London gunmakers. I shot an experimental hundred one day partridge driving, and never killed quicker or cleaner, particularly high birds coming down wind. It may be that I myself was in better form than usual, or the powder (Walsrode) is quicker than Schultze, which I otherwise invariably use, but certainly the short cartridge suited my gun, which has the usual length of chamber. As there is a considerable saving of bulk and weight in the short cartridge, why, if other things are equal, use long ones?' I see no harm in mentioning that the gunmaker in question is Mr. Charles Lancaster, and I may add that I have heard these Pigmies much commended, though I never used any; and it is unfortunately too late this season. I never publish verse in the body of the Magazine because good verse is so rare and bad verse so depressing; but these Sapphics by Mr. Guy C. Excerpt: ...stranger, playing for the first time at Eton, who has been accustomed to a good light, would find himself equally puzzled by the close proximity of the trees, and very apt to lose sight of the ball after it has left the bowler's hand; whilst in the late afternoon, when the sun is going down, the shadows cast by the trees are very baulking to those unaccustomed to them. Moreover, as a rule, the wickets are much deader and slower than at Harrow; so that really each school would have, as is usually the case on its own ground, a decided advantage to start with. It has also been said that the removal of the match from Lord's would seriously impoverish the M.C.C. coffers. This reads like a joke, and was probably intended for one. If really meant, the propounder of such a statement must have been ignorant of the resources of the M.C.C., which is probably one of the richest sporting clubs in the world, and if necessary would be able to recoup itself in many ways for the loss of the school profits; though the question of money-making in connection with the University and School matches is such a repugnant idea that it should not be entertained for a moment. The county clubs, of course, have to consider the question of s. d., and a good match extending to a third day means a welcome addition to their funds; but M.C.C., with its four thousand members and an unlimited candidate list, can well afford to be above all mercenary considerations. At the same time, the removal from Lord's would be a great upsetting of all the old traditions under which the match has hitherto been played, and there are many who feel that they would not like to see it, except on the old ground which has been consecrated by immemorial custom, though at the same...

I and my machine were no longer like a masterless dog, and, if we were scouted from the pavement, at least we would take modestly but firmly, if need be, our proper breathing room in the road. From this moment my attitude towards hansoms was, in the classic words of Punch, ' 'also schnapp ich meine finger in deinem face.' Cautious and alert, I merrily proceeded on my way, using my bicycle as a means of doing my morning shopping or other business. I found that my experience in driving an exceedingly naughty pony in a cart in town stood me here in very good stead, my eye being fairly educated to pace and distance; and soon I learnt to judge of the breadth of my handle-bars almost to an inch, and of the habits and probable proceedings of the various vehicles by which I was surrounded, with nothing, apparently, but my wits and nerve between me and destruction. Drivers of hansoms have various ways of inflicting torture on a fellow-creature, one of which is suddenly and loudly to shout out Hi when they have ample room to pass, or when you are only occupying your lawful position in a string of vehicles. Also, they love to shave your handle-bars and wheels, passing so close that if you swerve in the slightest - which, if you are possessed of nerves, you are too likely to do - it must bring you to serious grief. They are also very fond of cutting in just in front of you, or deliberately checking you at a crossing, well knowing that by so doing they risk your life, or, at any rate, force you to get off. I myself always ride peaceably about seven or eight miles an hour, and keep a good look-out some way ahead, as by that means you can often slip through a tight-place or avoid being made into a sandwich composed of, let us say, a pedestrian who will not, and an omnibus which cannot, stop.
