One important book is Hitler's Forgotten Victims. But besides telling, it is also to show how special these children are-their ability to love and to be loved. They are more than a burden and great responsibility; they bring forth the best in us, values we so often forget or dismiss as not important.

Book excerpt: Traditional methods for creating intelligent computational systems have privileged private "internal" cognitive and computational processes. In contrast, Swarm Intelligence argues that human intelligence derives from the interactions of individuals in a social world and further, that this model of intelligence can be effectively applied to artificially intelligent systems. The authors first present the foundations of this new approach through an extensive review of the critical literature in social psychology, cognitive science, and evolutionary computation. They then show in detail how these theories and models apply to a new computational intelligence methodology—particle swarms—which focuses on adaptation as the key behavior of intelligent systems. Drilling down still further, the authors describe the practical benefits of applying particle swarm optimization to a range of engineering problems. Developed by the authors, this algorithm is an extension of cellular automata and provides a powerful optimization, learning, and problem solving method. This important book presents valuable new insights by exploring the boundaries shared by cognitive science, social psychology, artificial life, artificial intelligence, and evolutionary computation and by applying these insights to the solving of difficult engineering problems. Researchers and graduate students in any of these disciplines will find the material intriguing, provocative, and revealing as will the curious and savvy computing professional. * Places particle swarms within the larger context of intelligent adaptive behavior and evolutionary computation. * Describes recent results of experiments with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm * Includes a basic overview of statistics to ensure readers can properly analyze the results of their own experiments using the algorithm. * Support software which can be downloaded from the publishers website, includes a Java PSO applet, C and Visual Basic source code.

Book excerpt: Crumbling Indian and Spanish ruins, lost gold and a modern ranch are all part of The Land where centuries of men and women have lived, loved, fought and died. It is a novel of their hopes, dreams of wealth and power, their lust and greed. Symbolic of what this piece of earth means is the spear point made by Silver Moon and cast aside to be found by each successive generation. The spear point fills each possessor with the vision of the past and these ghostly visions have a determining effect on the fate of those who hold it in their hands. In the end, it is this ancient spear point that saves the ranch and its owner from disaster. ROBERT K. SWISHER JR. has been a ranch foreman and a mountain guide. An individual who knows the outdoors and western history, he has successfully combined these interests in stories, poems and novels. He is also the author of “The Last Narrow Gauge Train Robbery,” “Fatal Destiny,” “Only Magic,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “How Far The Mountain” and “Last Day In Paradise,” all from Sunstone Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud Anderson is a flyers flyer. The Californians enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his fathers farm. In January 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Buds closest friends. In February 1944, Bud Anderson, entered the uncertain, exhilarating, and deadly world of aerial combat. He flew two tours of combat against the Luftwaffe in less than a year. In battles sometimes involving hundreds of airplanes, he ranked among the groups leading aces with 16 aerial victories. He flew 116 missions in his old crow without ever being hit by enemy aircraft or turning back for any reason, despite one life or death confrontation after another. His friend Chuck Yeager, who flew with Anderson in the 357th, says, In an airplane, the guy was a mongoosethe best fighter pilot I ever saw. Buds years as a test pilot were at least as risky. In one bizarre experiment, he repeatedly linked up in midair with a B-29 bomber, wingtip to wingtip. In other tests, he flew a jet fighter that was launched and retrieved from a giant B-36 bomber. As in combat, he lost many friends flying tests such as these. Bud commanded a squadron of F-86 jet fighters in postwar Korea, and a wing of F-105s on Okinawa during the mid-1960s. In 1970 at age 48, he flew combat strikes as a wing commander against communist supply lines. To Fly and Fight is about flying, plain and simple: the joys and dangers and the very special skills it demands. Touching, thoughtful, and dead honest, it is the story of a boy who grew up living his dream.

Time after time it seems death would take him, but he always wins his fight for survival. The survival of his people rests on him. Love enters his life at an early age. The wild beasts of his era only think of him as a good meal. As the story continues through 9,500 years, one of Flying Hawks descendants appears with lots of questions. Flying Hawk meets an ancient tribe called the Old People. You must meet them also. These Old People are an earlier race of people who inhabited the Americas before the Asiatic tribes from Russia and Mongolia crossed the land bridge to populate the continent. The Asiatic races fought with these early cave peoples. I have found little bits and pieces of information which are as elusive as these early people. We know that there were early civilizations all over the world; ancient cities are occasionally revealed when the wind carries away mountains of sand. We must not overlook the importance of early woman; her role was not of subjugation but holding the family together. These hunter-gatherers followed the wild herds for their sustenance, and they believed in a great spirit.

Book excerpt: It is proposed by the author to publish the result of his observation on the mythology, distinctive opinions, and intellectual character of the aborigines. Materials exist for separate observations on their oral tales, fictitious and historical; their hieroglyphics, music, and poetry; and the grammatical structure of the languages, their principles of combination, and the actual state of their vocabulary. The former topic has been selected as the commencement of the series. At what time the remaining portions will appear, will depend upon the interest manifested by the public in the subject, and the leisure and health necessary to the examination of a mass of original papers, the accumulation of nearly twenty years. The character and peculiarities of the tribes have been studied under favourable circumstances and new aspects; offering, it is believed, an insight into their mental constitution, as yet but imperfectly understood.
