Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press Modern History 1. First Edition (March 2013). The Bach Mai Hospital was founded in 1911 and has become the largest, comprehensive general hospital in Vietnam. Currently, Bach Mai Hospital serves as a major teaching hospital for the Hanoi Medical University, assisting in the daily training of hundreds of medical students and interns as well as post graduate students and medical specialists. The Bach Mai Nursing School trains over 100 students annually with specialized programs for head nurses and nursing specialties. Hundreds of research projects are ongoing at the Bach Mai Hospital and result in significant contributions to the medical literature. Each year, the Hospital receives hundreds of foreign delegations who go there for training, for sharing medical knowledge, or to co-operate in the development of research projects. Dr. Bartecchi served in the U.S. Army as a Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam War and in addition to caring for wounded troops, he organized medical forays by helicopter to towns throughout the Mekong Delta. During his tour in Vietnam, working so closely with the civilian population, he developed an admiration and respect for the resilient and proud Vietnamese people. In the mid-1990s, Bartecchi became involved with assisting the Bach Mai Hospital improve their facility and providing training for the doctors, nurses and staff there, including exchanges of medical personnel between Bach Mai Hospital and American hospitals, as well as arranging for assistance in the area of medical equipment and supplies, donated by organizations and corporations. This book provides the background to this story. Humanitarian aid programs are a partnership – a knowledgeable, capable donor and an organized, enlightened receiver. Programs maximizing those qualities have a good chance of succeeding, while others will waste the time, talent and treasures of the donor, and further frustrate the hopes and ambitions of the receivers. In this text, Dr. Bartecchi outlines a program that worked and provides suggestions that could help others develop a successful program. Carl E. Bartecchi, M.D., MACP is a Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is also a Professor (Honorary) at the Hanoi Medical University and has been awarded a Government of Vietnam, Ministry of Health Medal. For the past 16 years, he has been director of the Bach Mai Hospital Project. All royalties from this book will go to the Bach Mai Hospital Project. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press Medical Science. Since the early 1970s, Pueblo has become an academic medical center. Supported by its two hospitals, Pueblo is the only Colorado city, outside of the Denver metro area, that has two major medical residency programs. St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center has a Family Medicine residency program that trains 20 physicians each year and Parkview Medical Center has an Internal Medicine residency program that trains 30 physicians each year. Parkview Medical Center also has a Critical Care Medicine fellowship program that trains six physicians each year. The early 1970s was an exciting time in medicine and especially critical care medicine in southern Colorado. Bartecchi's goal in this review is to cover the early development of critical care medicine during the early 1970s, and for a number of years after, while he was still active in the care of critically ill patients. 27 photos/illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th century, Vietnam and Poland were both victims not only of devastating wars, but also of socialist planned economies that destroyed whatever war hadn’t already. In 1990, Vietnam was still one of the poorest countries in the world, while Poland was one of the poorest in Europe. But in the three decades since then, both countries have drastically improved their citizens’ standards of living and escaped the vicious cycle of national poverty. In this book, Rainer Zitelmann identifies the reasons behind the sensational growth of both nations’ economies, drawing out the lessons that other countries can learn from these two success stories. To explain the source of their success, he returns to Adam Smith’s 1776 treatise, The Wealth of Nations: the only way to overcome poverty is through economic growth, Smith wrote, and economic freedom is the crucial prerequisite for such growth. Developments over the past 250 years have proved Smith right. The market economy has led to a global decline in poverty unparalleled in human history. Compare this to the fifty years of “development aid” in Africa that have only entrenched the status quo, and it is clear which approach yields superior results. Despite these strides, almost ten percent of the world’s population still lives in extreme poverty. So, what measures actually help to alleviate poverty today? Through a wealth of data and stories from the everyday lives of Polish and Vietnamese people who experienced reforms, Zitelmann demonstrates the persistent relevance of Smith’s ideas to economic flourishing in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: In this spellbinding memoir, Bill Zimmerman relates his many adventures in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements of the sixties and offers invaluable lessons on the art of effective protest for today’s activists. In Troublemaker, Zimmerman vividly describes registering black voters in Mississippi, marching with Martin Luther King, Jr., organizing for the March on the Pentagon, protesting at the Chicago Democratic convention, and flying food to protesting Indians at Wounded Knee. He relates how he abandoned his career as a scientist to prevent military misuse of his research, then smuggled medicines to North Vietnam, established an international charity that rebuilt a Vietnamese hospital bombed by Nixon, and helped lead the grassroots lobbying campaign that finally ended the war. Breaking down the complex strategies and tactics of the antiwar movement, Zimmerman provides an invaluable look at the sixties and its continuing relevance today.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1999, compares the strategies of France and Japan in trying to win economic and political influence in the newly emerging Vietnam, which opened to the international community only after the Vietnamese Communist Party had started economic reforms in 1986. These reforms are aimed at transforming the country’s centrally-planned economy into a government-controlled market economy and at opening Vietnam to foreign capital, technology and know-how. This setting provides a unique opportunity for comparing the strategies of two nations from different continents in conducting their economic relations with a unified Vietnam.
